If you are starting a group for an instance, what is your ideal party makeup?

Personally I like

Warrior
Priest
Mage
Rogue
Paladin

I'm not a fan of warlocks they always lifetap themselves to death instead of drinking while all the other casters are sitting and drinking. Then they expect me the priest to heal them. Maybe I just grouped with some bad locks!

Why no mage?

i was in a group of 5 pallys once. that had to be the best group i ever had! we went through SM cath like it was nothing. (we were all lvl 37-40)

otherwise:

Pally (me)
priest
warrior
hunter
lock

EDIT: if the group knows how to let a pally tank, then scratch the warrior in favor of a mage

Yep - same but i really don't try to justify my dislike for rogues, i just don't like em.

You play with bad warlocks... most of the locks I play with don't expect heals when they tap. An occassional renew is nice but I typically tap and canabalize if we're fighting humanoids or bandage if not?

My favorite group would probably change depending on the instance... but in general:

Warrior
Priest
Shaman
Mage
Warlock

Only downside is I have to compete for loot with other cloth wearers... Not a fan of rogues at all... I personally think they are the most useless class for groups and only wish one was around when we stumble on a locked chest.

I don't mind healing locks when they need it, that is what I'm there for. I just couldn't understand why the ones i group with are tapping when it is obvious the other casters in the group are sitting/drinking.

I didn't know rogues were so unpopular the few i've grouped with seemed very good/useful nice players.

rogues do good damage... but what else do they offer to the group (especially if they don't have improved sap)? And especially later when you deal with mobs that have powerful AOE attacks, rogues can't get out of the line of fire but they only wear leather. So, they end up taxing the healers more than a mage, lock or hunter who can stand out of range and not worry about being healed unless they pull aggro.

A good player is a good player... don't get me wrong I'll take a good rogue over a bad lock any day... but mages give, decurse, AI, AOE, sheep and water locks give healthstones, bloodpact, AOE and soulstones... Hunters give TSA, mail armor, freeze traps and the best pulling capabilities.... shammys give healing, totems and rez... Druids give healing, tanking in a pinch and battle rez and cleanse... Rogues are just not very multi-dimensional. They primarily just give you single target burst damage... (especially once in combat and they can no longer sap). Skill being equal I'm taking the other DPS class every time.

Oh and tapping is just more efficient (if you have no mage). When I have a mage and everyone else is drinking I just drink... but why spend 2g on Morning Glory Dew every time I go into an instance when I can tap and canabalize/heal from renew/or bandage... costs me nothing. And as long as we're good with aggro management we can just heal ourselves during the next fight with life drain and siphon life. I get back about 180 hps per tick from that combo now.

when im in a group w/ my lock i generally tell the priest ahead of time not to worry about healing me unless im getting attacked. if im down to half my health and i just life tapped, healers need to not freak out, and pay attention that im about to eat the dead person on the floor.

as for my favorite group:

Lock
Priest
Hunter
Shamy
Warrior

this way we have tons of dmg, and i only have to compete with one other person for drops :) (my 2 main chars are lock and priest)

If I want drops I would say my favorite group is:

Resto Druid
Warrior
Shammy

Depends on the instance and level, really. Sometimes I need a sheep(er), sometimes I need banish, other times I need sap. And sometimes, you need 3 hunter pets ;)

One of the best runs I was ever on consisted of 3 Hunters a shaman and a dps warrior. Hunters can really mow stuff down very easily when people know how to play the class without being wreckless.

Hunter (Me)
Pet (Bebop granted most groups rather take him and leave me it IF )
Druid
Pally (Assuming they to give me wisdom or kings not might) (And a pet buff once in a while would be nice)
Warrior
??? Anybody really. I'm easy.

Within reason, almost any group composition can work - and part of the fun and challenge is to try to make the best out of the assets you have available.

Having said that, my theoretical "ideal" alliance group would be:
- Warrior
- Priest
- Mage
- Paladin
- Warlock

Good Palas can be backup anything, and I'd rather have a Mage over a Rogue for dps (more utility and better crowd control). Warlocks are seriously underestimated and underused.

Druid Tank
Mage
Warlock
Rogue or Paladin/Shaman
Priest

You've got the holy trinity of buffs and plenty of extras(Intellect, Mark, Fortitude), you've got loads of crowd control (Polymorph, Banish, Seduce, Shackle, Hibernate, possibly sap). You've got a tank, and possibly an off tank, a healer, an off healer, and loads of dps.

Utility? Go ahead, tell me this group doens't excell at utility.

One Druid tanks, the other heals, 3 saps if needed. Sure, its harder, but we only take out the bosses anyway.

same as loriel:

warrior, warlock, mage, priest, paladin.

This group can handle anything thrown its way in a 5 man instance. only problem is sharing the loot between 3 cloth wearers =/

You can get water from a Mage in a city anyway... I took Hunter instead of mage for loot, pet and trap > sheep & AI.

If a Warlocks starts lifetaping, they heal themselves, or I do.

I've done the 10 man with 7 Hunters, and let me tell you, mobs dropped like flies, and the hunters took almost NO damage. The priest was like "I feel so safe with all these angry animals protecting me"

I took Hunter instead of

I saw these 5 words and couldn't comprehend them. The hunters I have grouped with are second only to mages for their group disruption. Maybe I have just played with some bad ones but their basic group play is to mark a mob for the group then set their pet on another mob and begin to solo it. After a few seconds they start yelling "HAEL my PET NUB"

bad vs good.

Good Hunters turn off auto-growl, mark the pulled mob and both Hunter & pet attack the marked along with everyone else. If they get aggro they feign, if the Priest gets aggro they send the pet to take it or trap it.

Got quite a few good Hunters in my guild

Yavvy i'd like to meet them. I'm to the point where if I join a pug and there is a NE hunter I start cringing and checking the cooldown on my hearthstone.

It's just feast or famine rgirty.

Good Hunters are awesome to have in a group (and sometimes necessary, for instance to kite Drakk)... but bad Hunters are an absolute disaster. When you get into a group with a Hunter who knows what they're doing you will appreciate them a lot.
