View Full Version : How can you make Fishing Bearable?

MurderMan

I've tried, believe me MANY times, but I just can't seem to bear fishing.
It's the most boring profession i've ever encountered, but I'd like to have mine go up!
It's just so mindless to sit in one spot and click on one thing involving no movement of your character for hours to increase your fishing skill.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Edit:
On a side note, do u guys like my new avatar?

If you're the competitive type, try entering the weekly fishing tournament in STV.

With a game full of content, instances..raids pvp, world pvp *depending on server* plus all the other professions. I can't suggest standing there fishing for hours at a time. I tried it too... then i went to the kitchen to get something to gouge my eyes out with as that would be more fun that fishing.

Fishing is pretty boring ... but I want to get to 300 on everything so I just fish for the same amount of time as the lure I am using .... 10 minutes out of each time you play isn't too bad and I can usually get 10-20 points ...

just do it a little at a time ... like if you're waiting for the boats do a little fishing, you can usually get off 2 or 3 casts .... or if the boat just arrived and you hop on keep on fishing .. again you can usually get 2 or 3 casts off before the boat departs...

I love fishing! It's my favorite trade skill easily and makes all my money for me too! For me I think a factor which makes it more fun is that I use almost all the fish for cooking or alchemy purposes. If you can't really use them you might see it as boring, I dunno I have always enjoyed fishing even on eq.
If you haven't leveled up cooking yet then try doing it as you're fishing too. It might give you more motivation to find particular fish and recipes.

Those of us that fish for profit love, love, love those of you who do not. By all means, please don't fish.

Thanks!

i drink beer while fishing..i recommend a ncie Pale Ale microbrew.

i typically fish for Nightfin and Deviates, i play the game in windowed mode and surf while fishing. Otherwise.. it's very..very..boring.

i'd like to hook into a fish and then some sea monster comes out to attack me.. anything to liven up the otherwise dreadful experience.

or i dont know.. charter a boat for 5g and go out and catch some rare stuff?
--thats a good idea actually.

Fish the canals in SW while LFG or selling stuff...helps to pass the time, and you can level to 300 in any puddle of water that lets you cast your line.

I did this and skilled up to about 14 before i deleted my fishing pole so that i wouldn't attempt it again.

For those of you who fish, my hat is off to you!

Well, here's the contrary view. I like fishing. In a game filled with quests and instances and PVP, sometimes it's nice to spend a few minutes just staring at the screen, listening to the water lap, watching people kill pirates on the beach, catching fish some of which go for you-would-not-believe amounts of money.

For a hunter, being able to catch and then cook food for a pet saved lots and lots of silver over the levels. (Note that cooked food stacks better than raw food).

From a roleplaying point of view, I call myself "Master B". Master Cook, Master Fisher, Master Leatherworker, Master Rifleman, Master Drinking Buddy. Oh, that last one comes from lots of Rumsy Rum Black Label (something you get from fishing!).

Cheers
Craig

I like fishing as well. FelonyOne gave excellent advice in this thread: to avoid a "fishing burnout", only fish for little periods at a time. Until your lure runs out is a good rule of thumb, for example, or when you are waiting for the boat to arrive.

Personally I'm like craigbeere, I love fishing as it's an excellent change of pace. But yes, like you I get a bit tired of doing it longer than 10-15 minutes at a time. Just have patience in skilling it up and you'll be fine... I made a habit of fishing for one "lure period" everytime before I start questing and I will get to 300 someday that way.

I often get on a work-related conference call from home every morning. When I am on that call, I fish. It advances me in the game yet requires so little actual attention that I can still pay attention to the call.

I have my main's fishing up to 190 and I tell you it is slow going at that point. I generally only fish when waiting for boats, but a couple of times recently I decided to fish for a change of pace. I got about 8-10pts in a 30min period. I can't imagine how slow it goes when you're in your mid-200s.

Although something to look forwards too is fishing in ZG... needs 300. A guildie of mine fishes in ZG when we're waiting for ppl...

Of course you can also summon the fish boss in there too =]

I think fishing is worth your time when u get to higher level the fish (eels) u chatch is worth a lot of cash in the AH.
If u don't mind the cash i think fishing is intresting for hunters because you can get the food for ur pet easy and cheap.

I tend to do most of my fishing with my friends. We'll all spread out across the server (i usually get dibs on the river in STV, another friend takes the savage coast) we chat back and forth while fishing, talking about plans for our toons or just whatever comes up.

That being said..i salute those of you who do not fish, and if any of you are on Khaz Modan and dont fish, then i also thank you for not giving me competition while i fish.

Just for example...the other day i fished out an iron bound box from the river and inside was a Fen Ring of Agility...10g made on my first cast into STV..woohoo!

Edit: On a side note, are all the fishing items (hat, gloves, boots, pole) rewards for the fishing contest in STV? Quest Rewards? Drops? I'd really like to get a full suit of +fishing gear...

I think there's a fishing trinket u can get... but I forgot...

There's a sweet fishing trinket you get for the fishing extraviganza in STV on sundays. It lets you turn into a fish and swim fast. I'm a druid, so it has less appeal to me =]
The other reward from this quest is a arcinite fishing pole +35 fishing... best pole in the game.

If you're horde, there's a cool hinterlands quest which gives you a pole with +25 fishing.

If you have a lot of underwater breathing potions and a lot of time on your hands, you can swim around southern desolace opening shell fish traps for a fishing pole with +20 fishing. I swam around in aqua form for an hour and didn't get one =[

There are fishing enchants too... a +2 and a +5 I believe.

Oh and the funniest fishing related item in the game is Nat Pagles Fish Terminator. Nat Pagle is the fishing guru who sends you on the artisen fishing quest. It's a two handed staff from ZG... The inscription on it is, "Fishing is for sissies"

fricken nice epic staff

LOL - Now that's a good way to fish.

My fishing is currently about 250 (ish) with Nat Pagles rod and a +75 / +100 lure that gives me approx 350 - 375 fishing skill. With this I've recently been fishing in hinterlands which I think is prob one level lower than where I should be fishing (any suggestions anyone?)

That said I've caught a number of Eels there and just sold 10 for 18gp last night (I'm saving the rest for my own Flasks when I need them) and although it takes approx 9 fish per skillup it's not too bad and as has been said it's best to do something else, turn all the sound down except the bobber and then just click when u hear it - you have plenty of time after it ducks to reel in...

If you fish for stonescale eel, you aren't catching a lot, but everytime you do it's like 1g. Ding! It's addictive like gambling. Evertime you want to stop you catch one ;)

edit: Longpot, as long as you catch something you will level up. So just do it somewhere where it makes you money, like for Deviate or stonescale.

I know this is about making fishing more bearable, however.

If you are fishing in the hinterlands for $, try killing the trolls for wildvine. Wildvine is up to about 1g each on my server. In 30 minutes or so last night while running through the area for the zf mallet i gathered about 10, so did most people in the group.

10 wildvine in an hour is a reallly good drop rate. I used to farm for the stuff and would get about 1 per 20m or so. I would farm in that area in front of where you get your mallot.

if you're gonna farm for the wildvine, have a tailor friend use it making the dreamweave stuff and it'll probably sell for more then 1g a pop =]

or if you're into gambling, have a LW make some wild leather stuff =]

Go to a lake or pool where theres the schools of fish. Tell urself to just fish that out and then do something else

OR

When u fight near water and u see a school, fish it dry then fight on. keeps u going.
dont fish for 2 hours straigth. Thats only for me :)

I've skilled up fishing to 300 about 4 times in 6 characters, and can only think of being bored once when I went from 190+/- to 225 in Southshore ---- other players started taunting me because I was there for more than an hour. Otherwise my secret is to never plan on fishing --- wait for floating debris as an incentive and then pop on a lure and fish til the lure time runs out (as someone very wisely suggested earlier) --- always recast to be sure the first five casts are dead center to the aura in the water. The other well-known device is to fish while waiting for the boat (it makes the boat come faster) and fish while on the boat before it sets sail. As for good spots, my favorites are the shores of Feralas --- if you time it right there's can be as many as four floating debris fields --- pick up the 'giant-shrinker' before heading out and pick the sweet spot between the elementals if you can. Another is Lake Lordamere (sp?) where you can alternate between turtles and fishing and again some floating debris. And finally, Tanaris' Steamwheedle port where the eels run free.

I watch a movie while fishing. Turn the sound on the game up, putyour mosue on the lure and right click when you hear it.

One of my problems with WoW since I started playing is the realtime nature of the game makes me somewhat on edge. One thing I've been trying lately is having a 10-20 min cooloff period before I goto bed where I fish... pop on a lure, and stare at the pretty souroundings of the moonglade (I'm a druid, quick moonglade travel).

I get a couple points every night, and I'm more relaxed when I goto bed... not to mention some nightfin's for a nice 8mana/5 buff....

I have found that fishing buddy has increased the rate my fishing skill goes up because it automatically turns off music and ambient sounds. The sound of the waves lapping on the shore sounded enough like the fishing bobber splash... especally when you're not paying much attention do it.

The only downside to fishing buddy over tackebox is you have to spell out the word switch. I was used to /tb sw. I have to type /fb switch now =]

Fishing addons, such as Fishing Buddy really help.

>The only downside to fishing buddy over tackebox is you have to spell

>now =]

Fishing Buddy can add an icon to your mini-map that allows you to switch outfits. You do not need to type anything. Alas, Easy Cast & Easy Lure were broken by a patch 1.10.

Another very good "addon" is Fish Ping http://www.curse-gaming.com/en/wow/addons-1495-fishping.html . It is not an addon but a replacement of the fishing bobber sound to make it louder. Fishing Buddy mutes ambient sounds to make it easier to hear the bobber but it is still a soft sound. With Fish Ping, there is no missing the sound of a fish biting. Alas, patch 1.11 broke it. It might get fixed though.

>quote from: Jaim Sandar.
>Somebody told me that it is a problem with 1.11, wherein Blizzard tried
>to make it so that people couldn't "illegaly" modify the game's built-in

>admitted it was a bug and would be fixed in a minor patch.

Fishing while waiting for a boat is a really good idea. I also can get one or two casts off when I am on the boat waiting for it to leave the harbor. Waiting for a group to show up, or for the mage/priest to finish drinking is good time to get in a few casts.

I have a habit of fishing inside caves & instances just to get that locale into Fishing Buddy's database. I will not spend that long but those one/two casts every now & then add up to increases in skill.

Fishing the fish schools is more certain way to get high value fish. Windshear Crag in Stonetalon has Oil Spills that drop Firefin Snappers and Floating Debris that drop chests that contain bolts of various cloth, leather and other goodies. The river in Hillsbrad has tons of Sagefish schools. The coast of The Barrens, Wetlands & Westfall has lots of fish schools. Oily Blackmouth, Floating Debris, Firefin Snapper. The three oasis in The Barrens have schools of Deviate Fish. The river in Stranglethorn Vale has Greater Sagefish. There are some stonescale eel schools now in Tanaris & Azshara, but there is heavy competition for them.

The hardest part about fishing for me that is hardest is waiting till level 35 to get the artisan fishing quest and then trying to get to the coast of Swamp of Sorrows to fish for Misty Reed Mahi Mahi. And opening shellfish traps off the coast of Desolace for hours to get my Big Iron Fishing Pole.

I use my wifes laptop in front of the TV when there is a good movie on. It is the only time I use it and my computer is in the basement (dungeon). I just turn the volume up so I hear the fish jump the bobber and keep my one finger in right click and my other on the recast. Boring? Yes. Beer? Yes. Rewarding? Barely.

Love fishing, love people that hate fishing more. Stay out of my pools!

Friends used to wonder why I always had tons of gold on me all the time, how I was always flush with runecloth, and most recently they wonder how they can get that sweet Mr. Pinchy Magical Crawdad pet as well!

The BC cooking recipes have made fishing even more so worth it, both from a buff and profit standpoint. 2-3 gold per Crawfish? 20g for a stack of Bluefish? Took me a few minutes to catch all that stuff... and I fish because I find killing mobs over and over soooo boring. Especially on a PvP server where the horde seem to always want to farm the mobs. 15-20 minutes of fishing, I can avoid all the boloney and buy that Primal Air.

Oh yeah, how I keep it from getting too boring... dual screens, pop in a DVD and go nuts.

Funny how this thread reactivated just as fishing becomes more bearable

Profession changes listed by BLUE posters on teh official forums state that:

The fishing timer has been reduced from 30 to 20 seconds and it now takes less time to fish.

The fishing timer can no longer run through its duration without a fish biting.

Fishing has been removed from Arathi Basin and Alterac Valley.

You can now fish in Underbog.

I'll be happy with that....I didn't have a problem fishing in the first place but now I'll have even less of a problem due to less "maximum" cast time and guaranteed bites!

Faster, more reliable fish farming ftw

Fish while you are waiting for something. I fish when I wait for BGs. I fish when I'm bored to do anything else. And I fish when I feel like it. Makes the whole damn thing more bearable.
