My main is a level 60 Troll. Throughout the entire levelling process, I was spoon-fed by the quest system exactly where I should go next, from Durotar, to the Barrens, to Ashenvale and Stonetalon Mountains, to Thousand Needles, to Desolace, to Tenaris, to Feralas, to Un'Goro.
Now I'm levelling a Night Elf. Like a good sheep I went from Tendrassil, to Darkshore, to Ashenvale, but now I'm level 32 and all the quest threads in Ashenvale are finished and none have prompted me to go anywhere else. Isn't the game supposed to give me a clue here?
I know from experience that I could go to Desolace or Stranglethorn to carry on questing but I'm suprised that the game doesn't point me in the right direction.

i'd say its a reason to play alliance. it doesnt spoon-feed you and you actually have to think.
to answer the original question, i dont know. i've leveled almost exclusively through instances so besides saying "go to STV" i really cant help you much

Probably because most Alliance go to Westfall in their teens for the Deadmines quest line.

See, Blizz helps you with tips right there:

So while technically 1000 needles is pretty nice quest-wise you will probably be ganked there a lot so my advice is either so I recommend going to Hillsbrad Foothills or straight to Arathi Highlands since you're already 30ish.
Good luck!

If you do all the quests in Darkshore/Ashenvale there is a quest chain that takes you to Wetlands where you can pick up a bunch of quests.
If memory serves it is The Tower of Althalaxx chain.

Had the exact same issue...
After doing Tower of Athalaxxx-quest-chain I was somewhat lost. I went to do the Wetlands-quests and Arathi Highlands-quests but it all felt so not-nightelf to me. Now I think I should've gone to Desolace 'till L40 and then Feralas 'till 50. As I'm still only L40 now (yay mount) I don't know the next step after Feralas...
I'm doing Badlands atm and trying to get into Uldaman :)

There;s also a quest line that takes you to Darkshire via STV, looking for a missing Nighr Elf priestess.

From Ashenvale you should go to Stonetalon and from there to Desolace if you only want to do nelf quests. After that it's Ferelas.

But that's the problem, Wetlands and Darkshire are basically level 20-30 areas, at which point you're fine in Ashenvale anyway. It's when you get to the early 30's you run into a bit of a wall.
As I said I know where I can get quests for my level, but I just prefer following the storylines that the game sets out. When you follow overlapping storylines across zones it feels more like an imersive game and less like a grind

Well, quests actually take you to Stonetalon Mountains. But there aren't alot of other quests there and the mobs are not that high once you pass L30 so you usually head back to the lush forests of Ashenvale. I do think that you are supposed to progress to Desolace from there (which is just south of Stonetalon).

It has nothing to do with thinking. If this is your first toon then having the quest lines end like that is a big hassle. I know on my first character i was lost at how large the world is. Having the quest lines point me in the right direction was a god send to me.

I guess I kind of assumed that lvl ~30 is where you start to accept that ganking is part of life. So far it has seemed to me like the ganking is worth being in such prime areas.
STV is such a great place to level, both with easy grinds and piles of quests: between Booty Bay, Rebel Camp and Nesingwary's camp, you can have something like 15 simultaneous quests.

After being ganked a while i was able to find a couple out of the way places in my 30's... I have again found some in my 40's. Actually someone here tipped me off to feralas, there are several places on the islands and on the mainland itself that aren't very active.

I thought some of the stuff in STM sent you down into Desolace... guess I'm wrong. It's been known to happen, quite often, even. That's what I've usually done though, carried down through ashen and stm into des.... though I typically get distracted and end up somewhere else entirely...

The Alliance is spoon-fed a bit. The Humans are a good example. After Elwyn, there's a ques that sends you to Westfall, then to Redridge, then to Duskwood, and hell, their's even a quest in Duskwood that sends you to the Blasted Lands.
Man, that area is gonna get LOVE in the X-Pack. I guaroonteee.
