View Full Version : Leatherworking Specialization: Which One?

I know I'm a ways off, but I try to plan ahead.
Like many hunters, I do Skinning and Leatherworking. Right now, my leatherworking is at around 190 (little higher I think, but I can't remember the actual number at the moment).
Since it is not too far off, I want to start thinking about what specialization to choose when the time comes. As I understand, my choices are Elemental, Dragonscale, and Tribal.
So, looking for advice and information on each of the specializations and hopefully some recommendations on which direction to go.
Thanks all.:grin:

Tribal=Druids
Elemental=Rogues
Dragonscale=Hunters

Basically tribal and elemental are geared towards rogues and druids With these two you can only make leather gear. The only decent hunter armour you can make from dragonscale, is the black dragonscale gear.
Basically I would advise dumping leatherworking just now, and take engineering or alchemy. Leatherworking becomes quite useless end game for hunters(imo).

The Black Dragonscale stuff is nice for your first fire res gear, I'd say that it's worth getting.

My wife is a DS LW at lvl 60. She says its more shammy gear than hunter.
So at some point you'll want to dump LW and pick up engineering. All endgame hunters should have engineering. More often than not, you'll be the only person alive after a wipe due to feign death. You're entire party will praise and praise you if you pop out a pair of jumper cables and rez the priest.

I can't sell any dragonscale gear. I made the mistake of making some blue dragonscale gear. It eventually sold on the neutral AH (shammie gear( but I lost money on it.
There always seems to be black dragonscale gear at the auction house but I think it's the same items over and over because no-one ever buys the stuff I try to sell. I have one piece of black dragonscale breastplate I think has been at auction 10 or 11 times.
Black dragonscales are selling at 35 gold for 20. You need 60 of them, plus other stuff, to make a black dragonscale breastplate. The breastplates at auction are usually priced from 85 to 95 gold. You do the math.
Engineering is looking good. Feign Death + Jumper Cables.

So what do these specialisations make and why is one better than the other for various classes?

There are certain recipes (patterns) specific to each of the specializations.
As Duchel pointed out, the Tribal LW recipes have stats that are geared towards druids, Elemental recipe stats are geared towards rogues. The stats on Dragonscale recipes, plus the fact that it's mail gear made by LW, make it most useful to Hunters.
Also, you can only learn recipes within 1 of the specializations.

Actually Tribal is geared towards caster duids, and elemental is geared towards feral... so druids like both =]
The one bad thing I do not like about specialized profesions is that you can't unlearn a specialization and take another one. If it turns out one's not doing well for you, you need to unlearn leatherworking althogether, and start over at ground 0 to respecialize.
Engineering is a better for hunters anyways... you not only save the day with the jumper cables, you also get to make scopes and bullets for your guns....
plus you get to shrink the boss mobs and make them look really funny when you're killing them =]
