OK, it is a genuine question.

How are you supposed to take down Sergeant Bly in ZF?

I was there with a group the other day and they said you're supposed to let the NPCs fight and not talk to any of them.

We did this, then it seemed like the mobs were unending and we wiped... twice.

Any tips much appreciated

Depends but after you do the Divo rod you can let the npcs help you with the adds near bly or you can kill him yourself. He goes immune halfway through the battle and you simply switch ffrom mellee to magic or is it the other way around?

Did you wipe on the stairs battle, or after all the trolls were dead?

You start the event from releasing the Alliance NPCs from their cages (using the key dropped by the Executioner).

You let the NPCs fight the trolls, while you assist them - its a 10min or so war against the invaders coming up the steps, wave after wave.

Then after the waves you move down to the fountain, where you have several named mobs, again fighting with the alliance NPCs.

After all of the trolls are dead, you have the goblin npc open up the door to the final ZF boss (he blows it up after talking to him). After doing so, talking to Bly will cause the alliance NPCs to turn on you. Kill all including Bly and whalla.

If you dont talk to Bly within several minutes, he respawns if I remember correctly, missing your quest completion opportunity.

We wiped up the top after what seemed like 10mins of fighting.

The GL told us NOT to talk to the NPCs (Guess that's why I didn't complete the Quest? What happens if I do?) and then we stood there and watched the NPCs fight for a while.

Then someone attacked (noone gave an order) so we all joined in and, as I said, we lasted about ten minutes then got overrun by sheer numbers.

One of the group said we'd nearly done it, but when I went to the edge I could see approx. 40+ mobs at the bottom with a load of them running up and down the stairs.

I have no clue what was going on or how to do this lot properly. I guess we needed to clear the 40+ and then the named mobs (although I couldn't see how this would happen the way we played it...)

One thing tid you clear the entire area surrounding the stairs? Before you went up to start the event?

about 90% of the mobs that you fight during this encounter are no elite and should fall fast. But if you didn't clear all the mobs in the area you will find yourself fighting them as well. More elites means a much harder time.

It took me a while to figure out how to accomplish this the first time as well so don't get discouraged. It's far from impossible. And now it is one of the fights I look forward to the most when I play. Just let the NPCs do a lot of the fighting, conserve your mana for when you need it... keep them off your healer and drink, eat, bandage when you get a break. If you have a very strong AOE group you can shield the casters and wreck shop. As long as you keep Bly and the Goblin up you'll be able to complete the event and keeping the dwarf priest up is a plus since she heals.

If you wiped on top of the stairs then you didn't get to the part where you talk to them yet so don't worry about that. You talk to them after Bly tells you to move down the stairs and you fight the boss trolls.

If you flag yourself /pvp before the battle, the NPC healer will heal you.... just remember to unflag before you leave the instance =]

Step 1: Clear the area below the steps.
Step 2: Kill the executioner.
Step 3: Let the NPC's out (type /pvp to flag yourself. They throw out heals.)
Step 4: Help the NPC's during the ten minute long battle of seemingly never-ending trolls and help them kill the named trolls at the bottom.
Step 5: Talk to the goblin and let him blow up the doors.
Step 6: Wait until Sgt. Bly and his comrades start to hearth out.
Step 7: Talk to Sgt. Bly before he hearths out. This stops him, but lets the rest of his friends hearth out.
Step 8: Kill Sgt. Bly and loot your divinomatic rod.
Step 9: Go kill the troll chieftain behind the doors blasted open by the goblin.

I recommend talking to bly before they start hearthing just for fun. You shouldn't have too much trouble in taking his friends out... along with him. I always take out the healer first and then the warlock.

I never did this step, we always stopped after we got the rod..

We never really had any problems killing the mobs on the stairs we used the /pvp method and assigned two people teams. Such as the MT would attack and a dps would assist him. Another dps/or ot would attack a different mob and a dps would assist them. The 5th person would be the healer who would just try to keep up heals and throw some wanding or mindflay/swp in when the opportunity came along. Or if an elite happened to show up, to alert the others to focus fire there.

The added bonus is the goblin then leaves, so you dont have to fight him (assuming you dont wait for the hearth). The chief and his buddy is basically free loot, and an extremely easy and straight forward fight.

We usually kill Theka, Witch doctor, war, bly, hydromancer, Ghaz, chief, and summoner in that order. In PUGs ive found that if a group cant handle witch doctor, then war will be hell, and ghaz before chief due to importance (<3 carrot). We save the summoner for last since its on the way out, average loot, and difficulty for some PUGs even with the pet pull trick.

From what I remember, Bly throws up some sorta damage immunity shield when he's near death. I just remember being annoyed with it when I threw a 5pt finishing move on him and all I got was "IMMUNE" =[. He eventually becomes hittable again, but it does make you all worry a bit when you're killing him for the first time.

Does anyone know the official name of the chieftan behind the doors?

Chief Ukorz Sandscalp I believe. Possibly not in that order. He has a buddy, Ruuz (sp) with him.

These are my 2 cents :)
First of all you must clear all the area near the stairs – for your own safety. Before you let NPCs out of the cages, buff up and flag yourself for /pvp, thus the NPC healers will heal you. During the event all members of your group MUST stay on top the stairs, and nobody should go downstairs until you see that all the NPCs go down, and there are no waves of mobs incoming. In fact the mobs come in 4 separate waves during the event. And you should have some seconds between them. During these seconds everyone must seat and drink/eat to regen mana/health. As usual protect your healer and AOEing mages, though I personally think that it is better for mage to try to conserve mana and not to AOE very often. And don’t forget that among the trash mobs, there will come some elites also (I believe they are Sandfury Cretins), so your tank must attack them first, and all others should take care of trash. When you see that waves are over and all NPCs go down, go downstairs too and fight the rest mobs. After that again drink/eat quickly and talk to goblin and Bly before he starts using HS, or you may be late and not complete your quest. After the talk all NPCs turn unfriendly and will fight you (except the goblin – he will run and open the gates to the troll boss). Take down the priest and warlock first, then the others. And don’t forget to loot Bly’s corpse :) Frankly speaking the fight is all about mana and health conservation.
