View Full Version : Stopping the UI performance hit?

Hi, im using the Discord mods to edit my UI and now i've got it working very smoothly. The only thing that is smooth is my frame rate however. I've had to turn the texture distance down to compensate this and i've been wondering if there is a way to stop my UI giving me a performance it which can be a decrease as high as 20fps in sometimes.

I read somewhere that increasing the amount of RAM on the addons menu does this so I increased it to 128mb (i have 2gb of RAM by the way) but this didn't seem to fix the problem and made the game stutter a little.

Can anyone help please? can you even fix the performance hit UIs give?

Discord Mods are great for being very customizable. However where they stumble is in the resource department. All that customizablitiy comes at a hefty resource price. If you want to keep the Discord Mods then you need to look at disable some other AddOns. Mods like Auctioneer and WoW Econ also eat memory too.

Otherwise look at some AddOns that use less resources. For Action bars look at Bongos or Bartender. For moveing things, look at Visor (+Visor GUI). It is hard to come up with a replacement for DUF that so customizable, however if you will not miss that, then there are some great Unif Frame replacements out there (Sage Unit Frames comes to mind right now, as well as MiniGroup2)

I myself pick and choose mods. I love the combination of DUF and Bongos for example. However to each his own.

I'm the opposite of Xinh, I use DAB instead of Bongos and I use SageUF instead of DUF.

As long as you don't have ALL discord mods you're safe.

I wish there was another mod for DART because I loved how my interface looked. I just found it a little buggy when you started to script and make things pop up under certain circumstances. And even with 2 gigs of Ram, it lagged me a bit, mostly on initial logon tho.

Like we like to call it on #wowace, Discord is a whale. My UI for example uses only 1 LUA file to add textures to bottom etc. Dont need Discord for that, just coding skills :)

Discord will eat your memory and increase your memory rate and there is nothing you can do about it.

I would love it if Discord increased my FPS.

How much of a performance hit is auctioneer? My wife and I play on seperate machines, I run auctioneer and she does not I notice her machine plays a lot better than mine. She has a little better hardware but the difference between the two seems to be a lot.

Does anyone have any info on this? I'm going to uncheck all my addons while out adventuring and then /camp re-add auctioneer when i'm at the AH to test this myself.

Actually auctioneer is load on demand. So, until you go to the AH the first time it isn't even loaded. Just pay attention to your performance before and after going to the AH.

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess I might have to make sacrifices. I'm sure my 6600gt can handle more but oh well.

Maybe sacrifices should be made, im not really worried about the look of the frames. It's just I had my UI setup like Guild Wars (inferior game with a superior UI imo).

What addons could make my UI like Guild Wars?

I like to use /auctioneer always on so that i can always see what a boe item is worth not just while i'm at the AH. I'm going to unload it and relog like i stated and see how it works out.

Discord, I prefer standalone LUA files tho.
