sorry if this is a noobish question and has been answerd before, i have spent an hour trawlin the forums but cant find the info i want.

can someone just clarify this for me,

am i right in thinking that when an item has a + spell damage bonus for a particular school of magic (say shadow) it only modds acctual spells and not wand damage.

whereas

if the bonus says + 20 shadow spells and effects, then it affects wands as well and any other source of magic damage such a magical weapon bonus.

thx in advance
Motor.

You just asked the same question twice.

try readin it again,* properly this time * i asked for clarification between 2 slightly different scenarios. but just for you i will explain it again using small words - one items bonus says "spells" another such as smouldering pants bonus says "spells and other effects" its the 'other effects' bit im asking about.

next time try answering the question instead of being a smart arse tryin to point out stupid faults - you might just make your self look like a prat....like now!

You're new here so I'm going to give you the benifit of the doubt THIS TIME.

Keep your posts civil or keep them to yourself.

The answer is no, +spell damage, no matter how is written, will not boost wand dps :/

How did he get yelled at for clarifying for someone who obviously was trying to be a smart butt with his response?

Simple, someone reported it. In case you haven't noticed, and a lot of folks seem not to bother reading them at all, there is a section in the forum rules (http://forums.worldofwar.net/rules/), which forbids flaming and name calling.

Doesn't matter, if you feel you were provoked by the other side, obey the rules as laid down by the Admins, or you're going to get into trouble with the Mods and possibly temp-banned or permabanned, depending on how far you went.

If, he'd written something like. "I think you misread, what I was trying to say" and then further clarified what he originally meant. Then there would've been no issue at all. Going for name calling and a condenscending tone as a retort.

Folks have clicked that report button for less.

And understandably so imnsho, lot of us do not want these forums to be turned into a mirror of the official ones, which are more often than not a waste of bandwidth. Intelligent yet civil debate is what we crave and what this place provides.

ok ok lets not all get our knick-knacs in a twist

mfekse - thx for clearin that up for me

yousuck - thx for stickin u for me, but in the cold light of day (and sobriety )the mods have a point

Valas - fair comments, however to use your (very valid) example "could you clarify your question, you seem to have asked the same question twice" would also have avoided an issue:smiley:

freet - flame cheerfully withdrawn  - sorry if that over stepped the mark, im used to un-official forums being less stringent. i thought it was just a bit tongue-in-cheek rather than a flame.

lol my first post and i get in trouble Doh!

peace

Yup, you're correct about that. It would've helped as well.

Course, to some folks English isn't their native language, so they may not even realize, that they may have written something which could be deemed offensive to another poster with a better grasp of the tongue.

And as for those who are aware and trying to provoke you. Well, either way, it's better to try and take the high road.

It's not easy.

Especially, when one has a temper and I know that I myself have been very very tempted at times as well to just blast someone with full barrels.

In my experience, it helps to just leave the posting box open, go read some other threads, go do something else for a bit and then reread what I said. More often then not, I find myself just clicking the x button and not posting what I wrote in the heat of the moment, regardless of the fact that I spent quite some time writing it. I'm nothing, if not meticulous and verbose and usually spend several minutes considering my retorting composition.

Yes, I do have my quick short posts as well, but posts like this one. They take a bit, just because I wish to make sure that folks understand me from the get go, and if they do not. Then I'll rethink, ponder, consider, and try to rephrase ,what I was trying to say in the first place, in such a way that folks will hopefully understand, what I'm trying to say the second time round.

back on topic, i noticed yesterday that my wand damage tooltip on my character sheet displayed my wand's damage (as displayed on its individual tooltip) plus some other damage, printed in green.

at that point, for the first time since i began playing my walock, i pondered how my wand damage was calculated :) first of all i noticed that i did not have a ranged attack power rating! despite being a shocking discovery at first :p i came to accept this fact.

but, then again, what was that + damage listed next to my wand damage? well, it was the same as the total of my +spell damage and +shadow damage.

i am pretty sure that this was the case, because, after applying minor wizard oil to my staff, that number went up! :)

appearantly, this is at odds with what mfekse has stated. i will check this when i get home, and report tomorrow :D

I've always frequented caht boards where the moderators are exemplary in their conduct. In this case, a moderator could become better by taking their own advise and accepting that their very own post was also rather slapish. I mean, you COULD have said,

So an so, I recognize you're frustrated and just looking for an answer and may have interpreted the two question reply as being smart, but this forum will work better for us all if we avoid those assumptions and always assume the best and work toward bringing out the best in each other....etc.

Instead, when I read the moderator's reply, i thought to myself.... great! another forum I won't be posting in or viewing often because it is moderated by either jaded or full of themselves mods who really like stepping in.

Not baiting you, just saying, in my only post only, what my impression was. When the next guy said, And how did he get slapped for that? I agreed.

That is a bug, the damage is increased in the stats screen, but your actual wand dps won't be affected. Bummer I know, would've been sweet :)

Yes its there for me too. But the damage reported in game does not reflect the bonus. (Working from memory on the exact numbers since WoW is down right now) My wand does 119-160 and has a 1.4 sec rate of fire. My "up to damage bonus is 301. The tool tip reports a DPS of 3xx -461 showing the +301 when expanded.

Using the formula provided in the stats and formula thread 1.5/3.5*301 I would see a bonus on each shot of 42.8% or 129 damage. So I would expect my damage on each non critical shot to range from 248-289 (less resistance of course). But typically I see damage range from 109-160 with crits up around 280 something.

From this I deduce that spell bonus is NOT added to wand damage <sigh> if only it were so...

I have carefully tested whether there is any bonus damage to wands, and the answer is absolutely none. But it is a handy way to find out what you total +damage is for your gear without adding it up.

Wand = melee damage. It does not receive + spell bonus or it would be the most imba thing you have ever seen.

I petitioned a GM about this apparent bug, and they told me that the bug is in the displayed damage on your character sheet. In other words, no matter what it says your ranged damage is (assuming you have a wand equipped), the +dmg contributions are bogus and you only get the base wand value. Apparently, it's been a bug for quite a while.
