my mate is starting WoW, and is taking his decision seriously, and has come to the decision:

he wants more melee than magic, but must have good magic (dosent want a shaman, as he says he dont like the spells ). Can you reccomend something? He came down to an undead rogue, tauren druid or undead hunter. Any pointers to help make his decision? thanks

Well, undead hunter is out. Can't play those.

Undead rogue is fun but fairly common. End game, Druids are always in need it seems like.

Well, of those choices: rogues have no magic, hunters don't melee much at all but use ranged attack, and druids can melee (bear and cat form) and use magic. So I would guess druid if he is wanting one of those three.

Forsaken do not have Hunters as a class option btw.

Though quite frankly, I'm rather puzzled, he wants good magical skills, yet doesn't want any spells? It's rather like that song: Love and marriage, they go together like a horse and carriage. Can't have one without the other really.

Meaning, that the Druid is probably out as well, that just leaves the Forsaken rogue.

Personally, I'd suggest he try every class upto level 20 to figure out which ones suit him and which do not. Race does not matter that much to most of the class options. Only makes a difference really with the priests due to the racial spells, but that's about it.

Seriously. If he hasn't played yet, he has no idea what he really wants. The chance that he'll pick the class he ultimately would enjoy the most first try is pretty low.

Honestly, I think the Warcraft class descriptions over at wikipedia.org are actually quite good for helping a WoW-neophyte make a preliminary choice.

Here is the rogue page, for example:

I suggest playing lots of classes to level 12 at least, then maiking a decision on what to take to 60. For someone new to WOW, it should take maybe five hours to get to 12, the next ones will be quicker. Maybe plan on a different character a night for the first two weeks

It's not that hard to get to twenty nor does it take an exceedingly large amount of time, even for a casual. Just pick at random, he might not get the class he likes straight from the bat, but in the end he'll be better acquanted with what he wants from a class, in addition have some inkling as to how each class handles, thus somewhat improving his teamwork skills for when he's grouping.

This doesn't make sense to me...

Do you play? If so, what are you recommending? If not, are you really asking about yourself?

I'd play a few toons to level 20. by that time, you'll know a bit about the classes, and will be able to choose. Getting to level 20 is approx. 20 hours of gameplay. If you consider that a long time, you'll never play long enough to get to 60. (Halfway is around level 45)

Of the three classes you mention, Druid fits your description of 'his' needs the best.
