"fun" servers?

I recently heard someone talking about “private servers” or “fun servers”. Surly Blizz is against them - right?

What is the point of them? What is supposed to make them more fun than the normal servers?

I don’t have any intentions of trying one- I am just curious about them.

Yes there are private servers and yes they are against the TOS of Blizz. Basically 1 person pays a couple hundreds of dollars a month to host a server and then he and his buds can play on that server as well.

Of course, these have all sorts of crazy bugs, don't get updated, and are not allowed. I've never been able to drudge up too much info on them on the web, but it pretty much seems like crap.

EDIT: These are of course not sanctioned by Blizz, so whoever they are paying the money to is not Blizz....just wanted to make that part clear.
