This isn't a flame or rant in any way. I'm truthfully asking. I've been thinking about purchasing WoW, but i'm not too keen on shipping out the money if i'm not going to like it. I've asked others but the answers I recieved weren't too helpful("ITZ JUZ KEWL LAWL"). What makes it better than other Mmorpgs such as Everquest and EQ2? Thanks alot in advance. If this is the wrong section for this, sorry.
because then you can hear kcma talk about it all the time.

WoW isn't absolutely "the best game ever" by any means. It all depends on what you think about it. If you want to play a game where it can take between 3 months(if you're fast at leveling), 6 months (if you're kind of slow) or a year or more (if you're like me and didn't worry about leveling that much, and also quit the game a few times.) then play this game. It all depends on if you like the screenshots of the game (Which this site has plenty of. Even the expansion screenshots.) and if you like the feel of doing quests and instances for 99% of your leveling, then instances (10,20,40) for the best gear level 58-60.

If you could give us a clue of the sort of game you do like, then perhaps we could help... Or if you know someone who has the game you could sit in on a session and see what it plays like.

Just play the game, try to 10 day trial. No one can explain whats so great about WoW, cause it differs from person to person.

It's so accessable (sp) and easy to play. That's my opinion.
Its an MMO 'light', not as in depth or harsh as some.

It has Gnomes!
And it has the best gameplay of all mmorpg's i've played so far. Maybe UO was more fun at the time but that was cuz I didn't know any better ;o

There's a lot of "great" and "not so great" things - really depends on your feelings.
What i think is great is there are some really cool areas to run around in, and grinding for a while and finding a cool new item can be a lot of fun. The combat is also rather fun...
the downside - that I feel... It feels that if you don't have 4-5 freakin hours to do instances or raids, you'll never really be all that strong, and you'll never have good equipment.
Having to party up just to get the nice stuff sucks, because I like to solo most of the time.
Also, on my server, I find it a pain to actually find a group when i have time to do something...
Quests also get tedious... and the game get repetitive.
One thing I'd hoped was that when I leveled up really high, I could help low players in beginner zones - but, alas - the better spells can't really be cast on them - and it doesn't seem like running around helping with 1st level spells is doing much.
Kind of feels like if I don't join a guild and spend half my life on the game, I'll never really get anywhere, other than being a level 60 in some crappy gear. But, you can't please everyone.

WoW is a so-called "time-stealer", it requires HUGE amount of time to play and to not fall behind, so you gotta play really often and ALOT; that's the reason so many quit, it requires so much care, more than a baby, actually! if you're not ready to commit all your time to a vitual world, then DON'T BUY this game, it might ruin you, otherwise, enjoy the eye candy :)

I like that you can just get on for a short time -- 10 or 15 minutes -- and do something useful. In EQ it seemed like I spent a lot of my time getting buffed and getting ready and then travelling before I could even do anything.
I also like you can play it however you feel like playing it at the time. Want to solo? No problem -- you can solo almost any toon. Feel like grouping? Get a group together and go play. Want to be a hardcore raider? Sure -- you can join a hardcore raiding guild. Feel like doing a little PvP but not getting ganked every time you turn around? Join a PvE server and do Battlegrounds when you feel like it, but be left in peace when you just want to quest or farm stuff.
It's a flexible game and I love that flexibility.

After playing wow for a couple of months i can admit there is nothing really "amazing" about this game. Even if i became more dedicated to get to 60 and join a raiding guild i doubt i would be amazed by *insert boss name to farm or wipe on 100's of times*.
It is just a game with many many small features that lure you into an addictive timesink that progressively becomes less enjoyable each day you play.

In WoW you can just log on, run out of an Inn, finish a quick quest (Kill 9 things) then run back, turn the quest in, and log out within a matter of 15 minutes or less. AKA, good time to put something in the Oven or something, lol.

Actually it is not.
Casual players can do just fine in WoW.
You think it's a time stealer? Try playing something like FFXI.

WoW is great because of the little details and the polish that is put into games. Its the little things IMO that makes WoW an amazing game. Also if your worried about the monthly fee, or spending too much time try guild wars. But it in no way compares.

No offense dude, but that's so wrong. WoW is extremely easy to play compared to other mmorpgs. I've played EQ2, FF XI,Guild Wars and WoW is the most accesible and easiest to play for a short while by far (well maybe GW was easy as well, but that got boring so fast I can't describe it ;o). Yes, you can't get tier1 or better without spending loads of time, but not everyone wants that. I'm using 5man blues and I know people still in greens at 60 who're having a blast playing WoW. Heck, I even know someone who's been playing a year with highest char in his early 50's and who absolutely loves WoW.

But it's a question regarding whether you would become tired walking around in the same low-level 60 gear, cause you don't have the time to raid, you can't be in a raid for 10 min and then logout, gj

Because there is a lot more to WoW than simply "aquiring gear". If you're a person that is consumed with the desire to "have the best items", then yes, you're going to be spending a LOT of time playing the game burning your toon to lvl 60 and then raiding so that you can be e-important (yes, I just created that phrase). However, there is an immensely larger portion to this game than that. Not everyone cares about "keeping up with the Jones' ".
Some people are perfectly happy first developing a character (perhaps even over several months slowly), and then doing the lower level instances. There are the professions that some enjoy leveling up and becoming good at, there are the faction bonuses that some like to work on getting, and some seem to enjoy the "capitalist" parts of the game (i.e. making money in the auction house, etc.).
There is a lot to this game when you truly think about it - and not all of it surrounds getting "uber" items.

This game has its benefits for every type of player. It is not time consuming at all, if you do not want it to be. I work 30+ hours a week, go to college, and still have time to be in a raiding guild. I have a character fully equipped with epics after a few months of playing, and I have recently began working on my PvP reputation.
It does have its downfalls, such as the annoying 6-10 hour maintenance every tuesday and the fact that you will in fact need some form of people skills. There used to be lag, but new hardware has fixed that. there used to be a huge wait for battlegrounds, but the cross realm patch has fixed that.
Every problem with the game will be fixed in time.... what few there are.
Like someone said, try the 10 day trial. its free.

whisper me (/w dstylez) in game if you decide to try it :)
of course ppl who think they're e-important think that's the only thing in game <3
The best thing about WoW in my opinion is the Social Aspect. This game is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. That should give you a hint by itself; it's designed to be played with other real life people. The fun my guild has when raiding, having a laugh, listening to music, catching people accidently singing!
On the other hand my wife hasn't been in an instance for a year now! She's perfectly happy running around throwing fireballs at things and running around on her Epic Mount :)
It's the variety of things to do in WoW. Got a few hours (and want to) go to an instance. Got maybe an hour you have quests to be getting on with, or you can grind some more rep (or gold). Got 15 mins, log on and say Hi to your friends! I know I am not the only one to show up and just hang around in town chatting with people!.

Level 60-70 will be level 55-60 15 times over I hear, so... It won't be so "casual gamer" friendly then.

Sure it may be hard, but I think it will still be very doable, by a persistent but casual player, who maybe doesn't have a lot of time on their hands in any one slot. Of course a casual 'ZOMG! GIVE FR33 EPIX PLS KK' may cry over it But they cry if they miss a boat or a spell gets resisted, or they even have to leave Iron Forge!

Why not? it will only take a lot of time. It took a lot of time to get to 60 as well and that was casual friendly :p

I like that its not only killing, even if thats the biggest part of the game.
Theres the names that relate to other things - like Hemmet Nesingwary, Gubber Blump, even the owl Orly in Tanaris. The quest text, reading the Dwarf's description of a mad Priestess you realize is a shadowpriest, fetching a water pitcher, watching the sunset, the rain (love it when it rains), playing tonks at the Darkmoon Faire...
Not that killing isn't fun - I feel good when someone is LFG for a mob I just soloed, when I tank without loosing aggro, being nr 1 on damage meters, saving the raid/group as only a Druid can :starry:

nothing is great about it. Please dont play the game. The servers are crowded enough as it is. Go away and play other games, whatever ones you won't have problems spending 50 dollars on.
There are 7 million of us. We don't need another player.
Thanks.

Under the hood or technically WoW isn't such a great game, really. However, WoW has a great user interface, very detailed world and lovely designed (well, for the most part) and WoW has a lot of fun and jokes in it. See, I also play Guild Wars. Guild Wars features _much_ more spells per class, free reskilling, a very balanced PvP. PvP in Guild Wars is also way more tactical, whereas PvP in WoW reminds me more of a first person shooter for the most of the time. On the downside Guild Wars doesn't give you the _feeling_ of living in a virtual world. Guild Wars tries to be a PvP based game. WoW tries to be an endless journey in a virtual world.

the problem of guildwars is that u are never really in the same world, traveling is very poorly done and the story is just weak. Personally i dont dig the graphics that much either and the thing that u can just hire some mercanaries just plain bloows

Socialising is also way more easier in WoW. This is the main reason for me to play WoW. But every now and then I enjoy playing a bit PvP in Guild Wars or playing around with some builds to find new synergies. I wish WoW wasn't so damn item based tough ...

Yeah low point on WoW,
So item based as hell, I don't mind item based games but the difference in gear is huge between non raiders and raiders. Still in the end I kill amg epix people even in my blue gear, so I guess it's not that bad.

Why is WoW so great? It caters to the widest playerbase Blizzard could make it. Honestly, I like the abuility to log in, get a few quests done, and log out. I like that I don't have to devote a ton of time to the game, it is very accessable, and quite enjoyable. Blizzard did a great job with the little finishing details to make it as enjoyable to me now, as it was back when I first played.

A whole bunch of things?
No idea what is so "good" about it...actually there are some pretty annoying issues like the endless rep grind or honor grind if you chose that path. lately in my server cluster, latencies in BWL are unbearable leading to raid cancellations and even ZG and MC suffer.
Still..the items and the locations pull me in, the various classes are nice to try and play....
If there was formula, everybody would try to copy it, but Blizz just knows how to do things right.
That is why Diablo 2 still "clicks" with me and Titan Quest doesn't...

Level 1-60 takes like, 6 months let's say for someone. Okay, now, 60-70 will be about the same exp it takes to get to level 60 from level 1.
If I am just guessing correctly, level 60-61 will be 130K exp (It shows it at level 60.), 61-62 will be 145K exp, 62-63 155K exp, 63-64 170K, 64-65 190, 65-66 215, 66-67 245, 67-68 280, 68-69 320, 69-70 370. That equals 2220K (2,220,000 exp.) if I added it up right. Sure, you get WAY more exp at level 60 from mobs, but still... That just means it's going to take 2 more months instead of another 6.

The core reasons for why WoW is so great (and popular, and possibly addictive..) is accessibility and variety.
The game is accessible because it's very easy to pick up and play, regardless of class and any prior MMO experience. The interface, the tooltips and the rest of the easy to master interface pulls you in and teaches you the basics, before adding on more and more abilities and challenges.
As for variety, there is just a ton of stuff to do - and it is very likely that you'll find some aspect of the game that appeals to whatever you want it to be. Some people enjoy crafting, others go exploring, yet others want to complete every quest in the game etc. Some players get a kick out of PvP and commit their time to that, others go raiding. Personally I'm a big fan of instances (and also raids), and I try to do some of those as often as I can - yet I also mix it up with farming for mats and money, working on trade skills etc.
Some players will tell you that there is not enough to do in this game as a solo/casual player, but imho they haven't yet discovered the depth of this game. I've been playing for about 20 months now and I have 2 lvl 60's with raid experience and also a bunch of alts, and I'm not even close to doing all the things I want to get done in this game.
Sure, there are occasional server issues, and there's no doubt the game is very item based. However, if you manage to look beyond these issues you'll find that WoW is simply fun. Try to not compare your equipment and experience with anyone else, and just enjoy the ride.
