I’ve had WOW now about 2-3 months and I’ve noticed lately quite a bit of downtime (server upgrades, hardware retrofits, etc.) and am wondering if this is the common amount you normally see of downtime, or just a “Series of Unfortunate Events” so to speak.

Thanks in advance.

they've been retrofiting the servers in anticipation of the expansion (which is likely to bring more people, so making room for them)

Thanks

There has been server downtime since the game released two years ago. It is the way of the world.

My server has actually gotten better as far as downtime over the last 3-4 months, but my roomate's server has been down every tuesday all day for about a month. So depends on the server too.

There is generally downtime every Tuesday, as well.

Every Tuesday is server maintenence day. At launch, there was a LOT of downtimes, mainly because there were unanticipated problems that came from various causes, but the server downtime was eventually minimized consiterably. Patch days tend to have extended downtime, because the servers are down for upgrades to the software and possibly hardware. With the approach of Burning Crusade, all of the servers are getting significant retrofits and upgrades, which also extends the downtime. However, in the end, the standard is every Tuesday, the server maintenance is run, which will bring them down for at least a couple of hours.

Like others have said -- it is the way of the world. There are solutions for networks, depending on their complexity, and the levels of redundancy in the hardware that are available, which can minimize this, but that gets very expensive very fast. However, overall, the servers tend to be up, and tend to be stable for WoW. Just have a little patience due to the current changes going on.

With so many players, so many realms, and such a massive game - be happy it's as stable as it is. I'd just get used to stuff like this - in inevitable.

The job they're doing to keep the game up and stable is so far amazing.

Ok, if everyone (except the above author) would read my original question THOROUGHLY I said LATELY. Everyone needs to stop defending Blizzard, as I am not doing anything but asking about server downtime LATELY.

I know how hard it is to keep things running smoothly when you have to coordinate a far-reaching business and can appreciate how stable things are now.

So, everyone RELAX and just skip to the next thread if you want to jump on someone...

And to remind people that european servers exist too, the maintenance day is actually wednesday in here and the time is something like 03:00-10:00, not sure.

Official end-of-maintenance is 11 server-time (CET). You can generally get back on earlier, but there are always done-when-it's-done days when the maintenance ends much later.

are you by any chance playing on a EU server in BattleGroup 3?

if so that explains the recent server problems - they fixed it yesterday - though too late for 2/3 of the top raid guilds on my server who either disbanded or migrated because of the problem.

And, if you read my response, I did explain lately. I also covered the changes from release until now, but I did actually explain lately. Please relax.

Actually, if YOU read what I wrote instead of briefly looking through it, I said everyone EXCEPT THE ABOVE AUTHOR - you - need to do a better job reading...etc etc.

No big deal about it, but I just want people to respond to what I wrote, not what you think I wrote.

My bad, what I get for making a response before my coffee this morning ;)

Listen everyone; I don’t want to argue, I just want (as a new player) to know how often downtimes occur and if there was a regular frequency to them.

Several people gave me good pointers, and I thank them, so if there is no more about it, I don’t want to get into anything more than what I originally asked about.

No problem, we can all get along here. I appreciated the info you gave and it made me less likely to email Blizzard with complaints about downtime. Thats why I posted here first.

Thanks again
