There must be a better way of dealing with the spam. When I log in first thing in the morning UK time, more often than not there is spam on the boards. I always report them, but I guess the mods are usually in bed at this time.

Eventually they get cleared but the problem is that by then they have been there for several hours and so the spammers have won.

It's a suggestion from right field that may not be possible, but what if some limited mod powers were given to certain ordinary members? Like if you were a paying member and had over 1000 posts you could delete threads started by people who had less than 20 posts?

Would anything like this be possible?

Having said that, the spam this morning has been cleared pretty quickly :)

Yup, I was gone for about half an hour from the forums and when I got back it was here... The guy was in the process of making new posts, so they couldn't have been up for that long.

I hardly think the solution you are proposing is a good one - abuse would of course be swiftly dealt with, but it would still exist. Besides, I have always been against the idea of judging a poster by his number of posts, if only because the thought of kcma being our most valuable poster in that case chills me to the bone.

Keep the moderating to moderators is what I believe in. Now, whether we need more moderators or not is entirely another discussion, but it's not one we should have here.

I'd say some more mods would be a good idea though, but apart from that there are 2 actions that can be undertaken and which would have a positive effect on these fourms:

1) Add all goldseller sites to the word-filter so they can't create working links anymore. It has been done with ********** (yuck, that worked a bit too well. I was referring to the profile site operated by the same folks who made a well-known raidassist mod :p), so it wouldn't be too hard to add the known goldselling/hacking sites to that. If the same approach is taken to so-called '*******s' spammers would have a hard time generating traffic from this site.

2) Reset kcma's postcount to 1 and add some code so it won't get any higher regardless of how many posts he makes; in 95% of the cases they only serve to up his postcount.

Personally I think KCMA is one of the top 5 contributors to the board. He is knowledgeable on a wide range of subjects, not afraid to offer his opinion and entertaining when doing so.

He also often has a different viewpoint than most and has helped me as much or more than anyone here and does not know a thing about my class.

Give more people a ban stick would be great, i would be pleased if someone would rid the UI forum of one particularly nasty poster right away.

Need to get an Akismet mod for vB, and get it working. That system, handled by the Wordpress guys, is pretty slick and the API's been out for modders/plugin developers for various web software to integrate it into other systems, I'd be surprised if it isn't available for vB.

RNN may be a little blunt, but half the time he does happen to know which add-on the person wants.

(And the other half is him saying how **** said add-on is)

Agree, I also <3 KCMA. My first thread I read was his drain tanking thread. Still use it, and he answered all the questions I had about it.

We have said it before, but this might also be a good opportunity to stress the fact again that you should report and move on. We appreciate and even encourage that anyone should report any bad posts they come across, don't get me wrong. But most of the time everyone else and his mother needs to let the poster in question know of all the places he can stick his gold selling/hacking/powerleveling service. A whole bunch of bad posts I deleted had about five (or sometimes more) replies, the first one said "/reported" or something like that, and then four other replies where people made clear what they thought of the original poster. Guys, that's not necessary.

Not only does this make our job a bit more difficult, especially if it's in an already existing thread where we have to clean up all the follow-ups as well, but it also bumps the post. Trust me, the poster in question does not care one bit of what you think of him, he just wants to sell his stuff and move on. Bumping his post actually helps him.

Also, over the course of the time that these forums exist, a number of otherwise valuable posters has been banned temporarily because they couldn't restrain themselves from making rude comments towards the gold seller/hacker/powerleveler. Granted, these people are basically the scum of the earth in our WoW-loving eyes, but any member who uses this forum to make comments about anyone else's mother or personal safety, no matter what the reason might be, will face a ban. And that is just a pityful waste which could be easily avoided by self-restriction.

So, if you see that the post is reported, just move on in the knowledge that the post will be dealt with as soon as possible.
