View Full Version : Simple way to combat Keylogger?

Aside from the mandatory virus/firewall software, is typing the username and password into a text document and saving it to your desktop. Then copy and pasting from it into the login boxes within wow, a way to disrupt any keylogger you maybe infected with?
Just wondering as a friend told me he does it just to be double sure.
Only reason i ask is ive never trusted antivirus software as they always seem to get through one way or another (for me anyway, I may just be unlucky!)

Sounds fairly interesting, does the login scren allow copy/paste?

yup, just open the text document, and then alt+tab to copy then pop wow back up and paste.
Seems logical to me since i presume a keylogger tracks your key strokes after wow is launched and since there are no key strokes, in theory it shouldnt be able to nab the info, just wasnt sure if it scanned whatever was in the login boxes.

anti-virus programs don't pick up keyloggers cuz they aren't exactly viruses, more like spyware. you should get windows defender from microsoft and spybot from download.com, both free. ; ) i've never had a problem.

If you check "remember username" that's at least another piece of information a keylogger can't capture.

Some keylogger/rootkits also log the contents of the copy buffer if configured to do so, mind you.
Also, one of the above posters (the one advocating "Microsoft Defender") is just plain wrong. Many antivirus packages detect various kinds of malware. F-Secure, as an example, are particularly honourable about this, where other antivirus companies like Sophos, Macafee and Symantec quietly accept money from larger, more "respectable" malware vendors (yes, such things exist) to not detect their products. Hell, Microsoft themselves bought a particularly scummy adware company some months back, and overnight their software was taken off the list for the various laughably poor MS security products.

Perhaps the one you are using is just deficient...Mine works nicely, and is capable of and actually does detect and remove trojans, etc. before they even become effective on my machine, including keylogging ones...
Maybe you just need to look around more...

I use mozilla firefox for a web browser and have yet to experience any problems with keyloggers, viral programs, or spyware.

Yeah I use mozilla and didnt get hacked until I did and my Tier 2 preist + others all got stripped off my account....
Don't depend on firefox...
if IE can be a bit mroe responsive and have GOOD tab browsing i'd go back to IE. i really dont have a preference one way or another, i'll use whatever works. and IE7 has been disappointing...

bah. dont bother with anti spyware. i got my pc secure as hell and still some spyware gets thru. however, theres a very liqil nice technique to find both the program and the scoundrel that is messing with ur stuff..... no ad aware... no firewall or av... just mighty netstat :)
or download x-netstat:) it gives u a visual report and monitoring on whose o whats connecting with ur pc. thanks to this utilty ive got rid of many malware that passed thru the firewall, stopzilla bla bla bla. When ull c a strange program connecting, ull c it on ur x-netstat list. If u dnt kno what the program is, then binfgo... disconnect ur pc, so the suspicious program goes off, therefore u can delete by simply use the search of windows. also, u can track the ip of the guy whose trying to mess around with u. again, if the keylogger becomes active when u enter wow, then its no problem. when u quit wow just check the logfiles and if u c something strange then take action.
anyway, my opinion.
Not a bad idea - but if your computer itself gets hacked - then you've got a file sitting there with your password.
And trust me, even with all your security, most people here have been hacked and don't know it. Usually they just don't have anything on interest to the person and are either used to hack someone else, or just left alone.

I agree, but as long as you dont call the file 'WOW Username + Password' and keep it somewhere obvious then how would anyone know what it is?
Just thought it maybe one last defense against it, i really couldnt bare the thought of all those hours playing going down the drain...

I downloaded x-netstat and was wondering how to tell what is good and what is bad. Are things like red01.as-us.falkag.net bad?
Lots of people using Firefox have been hacked from what I can tell but yet to see anyone using Firefox + NoScript extension being hacked.
Would appear that however this hack works (using old unpatched jpeg exploits or the new VML exploits) that having Java Script disabled will protect you.
So Firefox + No Script will protect you afaik.

This is exactly what I use (and a physical firewall). So long so good.
i heard you can also use an on screen keyboard program like the one provided by windows to combat keyloggers. just my 2 cents.
