I posted this in the Tech Support forum of the Official WoW boards before they went to the new version, and it became a sticky. so I figured I would post it here to help relieve some of the "lag" some of ya'll are getting.

==========================

Howdy ya'll,

What you might be experiencing is what we like to call Malware / Spyware / Trojans / bad things, here is a little "How To" to fix those issues. And after you are done scanning your system please Defrag your system, you would be surprised as to how much speed you will pick up.

This "How To" is simply to help folks that might otherwise not be familiar with some of these applications and processes. And none of these programs except the anti-virus run in your background nor do they take up any recourses other than when you run them.

==========================

Make sure you don't have any viruses. Make sure you have an up-to-date virus checker on your system, and *gasp* actually use it once in a while.

If you don't have a virus checker and can't afford to buy one, go to Trend Micro's Free online virus Scanner, HouseCall: http://housecall.trendmicro.com

Although everyone should have an Antivirus (AV) Scanner and they should update it Daily, if you don't set it up to update automatically you will have to click the Update button.

If you're looking for an excellent AV light on resources NOD32 is for you. You can at least give it a try: http://www.eset.com/home/home.htm

Another Good and FREE scanner is AVG: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

Another thing to always do is to keep your system up to date from Microsoft http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/ .

==========================

One of my Favorite Anti-Spyware utilities that are free comes from Trend Micro called (drum roll..............) Trend Micro Anti-Spyware which I have done some tests with it, verse Lavasoft and Spybot-S&D (which I go into more detail on how to use them below) and Trend Micro Anti-Spyware blows the doors off them. Best way to use Trend Micro Anti-Spyware is to down load the trial (it lasts 30 days) and then go to the Help tab and update it.

If you have Spy Sweeper installed. While this is a great program, we need to temporarily disable (not uninstall) the program because it might stop our fix.

Disable Spy Sweeper:

Open it click > Options over to the left then > program options > Uncheck "load at windows startup".
Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
Uncheck "home page shield".
Uncheck 'automatically restore default without notification".

Get Hijack This currently at version: 1.99.1: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

Make sure you reboot before you run HiJackThis!!

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then post your log here: http://www.hijackthis.de

Also, make sure that you actually extract HijackThis to its own folder. DO NOT run it from within a zip manager (Winzip), as no backups will be saved.

==========================

Once that is all done and if you don't already have it, download, install and run CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com

Cleans the following:
* Internet Explorer - Temporary files, URL history, cookies, Auto complete form history, index.dat.

O_o;

First time i scanned i got 3782 bugs...

of which 127 couldnt be deleted...

i manually deleted them through alot of tough work..

heres my tip.. never Turn off your Anti-Virus..

& a quick tip :if you ever scan & get a massive number like mine... just format your PC & re-install all your crap..

because if u get a huge number there would be a even higher number but the rest couldnt be found... (unknown viruses etc...)

Do a forum search for Error 131. It's so common you'll get 10 hits from the last week, and I'm tired of people asking me to repeat it again and again. No offense, but the search function is there and working, all the details are typed up already, it's waiting for you to use it.

From the official US Site.

Are you seeing an error message that says "Error #131"?

If you are experiencing corrupt data files, you may receive errors during play such as the following (the 'File' field may vary):

ERROR #131 (0x85100083)
Program: C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\WoW.exe
File: Data\patch.MPQ

Please try the steps below.

We have a repair utility that can check your files and replace them if they are corrupt. You can get the latest version available here (http://ftp.blizzard.com/pub/WoW/other/Repair.zip).
Note: With the release of 1.8.0 the repair utility (repair.exe) can now be found in the main World of Warcraft game directory on your hard drive

If that does not correct it, uninstall the game. (If on a PC, be sure you use the official uninstaller first.) Completely delete the game directory from your system.

Next, run a full scandisk and disk defragment on the drive you wish to reinstall the game to, by following these steps (http://www.blizzard.com/support/wow/?id=mgi0559p).

Then reinstall the game. Be sure not to install any third-party programs or interface modifications of any kind.
If you continue to encounter corrupted data files after reinstalling your game, then they can be caused by the following things:

1. The data on the CDs was corrupt to begin with (damaged CD). This is not as likely if you were able to download and install the game with no errors.

2. The data did not install correctly (CD ROM issue).

3. The data installed to a sector on your hard drive that cannot be read, or is otherwise damaged (hard drive issue).

4. The data installed fine but corrupted over time (usually virus related or due to data being changed by third party programs).

The solutions below can be used to correct these types of problems:

1. Damaged Disc - Try the disc on a different computer, this will usually identify if the disc is bad or not. If the disc is damaged, check here (http://www.blizzard.com/support/wow/?id=aInformation0133p1) for replacement information.

2. Try installing the game using different CD ROM or DVD drive. You can also try modifying your CD device settings per the instructions on this page (http://www.blizzard.com/support/wow/?id=mdt0404p).

3. Hard Disk – Hard drives larger than 127 gigabytes in size can have issues with corrupt files if you do not have the latest Windows Updates from this site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/).

4. Please check your system for Viruses. It is also suggested that you run a full adware/spyware scan. Information about Viruses and computer security can be found here (http://www.blizzard.com/support/wow/?id=asi0462p).

5. Doing a scan of the computer's physical memory can help you identify RAM problems which could also cause this sort of corruption. We are tentatively recommending users try memory scan utilities such as the Windows Memory Diagnostic (http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp), available directly from Microsoft.

We recommend the extended test suite, which takes the longest time to run but is the most thorough test suite available with this tool.

Please be sure you have no third-party utilities or programs designed to interact with the game in any way.

Give that a whirl and let us know if it worked or not.

From the other thread here...

I have the ATI AIW 9800 pro and the X1650 pro and have had these problems with both. I THINK I fixed it by turning off the "let the application decide" feature of the 2 graphics standards (opengl and direct3d advanced feature) and setting their features to "highest performance" figuring that auto-anything required smarts which weren't too smart at the moment and that 'best performance' means 'less dinking around trying to make things better', seeings how things weren't better...

no crashes/blue screen of death since then, but I've got my fingers crossed...

AND I ghosted back to a several month old image first, to eliminate the possibility of having picked something up recently.

update - this did makes things better, but there is still a crash to desktop occasionally. damn it.
