Hello everyone,
After years of playing D2 and then not playing at all for a while I just started playing WoW. Since I donīt have any friends that play yet, and I want to take some time to solo and learn the game, I need some advice on a good solo leveling build that is easy to start with and not very gear dependent. I want to be able to kill things without dying all the time. I was thinking maybe a Warrior or a Rogue?
All suggestions are most appreciated :)

I wouldnt recomend warrior due to it being very gear dependant.

Hunter. They are known to be the very best for soloing.
Take the Beast Mastery build, with Marksmanship as secondary.
Trust me. This build and class has done me, and many others, wonders for soloing.
Edit: I should probably add..
They aren't very gear dependant.
You will be using a bow/gun all the time, while your pet sits and takes damage. You have the ability to heal your pet.
They have many things like traps that do damage, as well as an ability to fake death to avoid getting killed. They have a lot of stings that attach to arrows that can do decent damage.
You can also train your pet to do many things. (For soloing, I suggest getting a cat, and training him all the ranks of Growl, Natural Armor and Greater Stamina.)
You will be able to solo almost anything, and they are also a decent general-support for groups.
When you get to getting items with bonuses, go about 60% agility bonuses, and the rest stamina. (You may add a little Intellect and Spirit, but it's not needed. And don't even touch Strength.)
As for your profession. Engineering + Mining provides good guns and ammo, as well as many other helpful things.
Leatherworking + Skinning will get you decent armor.
If you want a bunch of cash, get Skinning + Herbalism, or Skinning + Mining. Sell the materials you get from them at the Auction House.
If you need any other advice, I'd be happy to help. You can PM me, or go to the Greymane server, on the Alliance side and contact Christof (that's my Hunter).

A warrior can actually be quite a frustrating class to play when you just start the game. They are highly gear dependant and the lousy gear you start out with means that for the early levels you are at a bit of a disadvantage in combat. Later on better gear and skills will even things out but it can be disheartening at the begining.

If you want to have a Warrior, or even a Rogue, or any other similar class, I still suggest rolling Hunter first. You want to get to 60 so you can have decent cash reserves for your gear-dependant alts (other players).
Edit: Let me correct myself.. By the time you reach sixty, the level cap will be raised to 70 (assuming you get the expansion).

I started out with a warrior, and I surely did not regret it. Gear dependency aint all that difficult. I didn`t know I was having a hard time before I read this post ^^. As an alliance warrior I got sword upgrades through the first couple of quests, and buying green armor casually on AH costs you nothing but a few silver. When you can go to Deadmines you can get Cruelbarb onehanded sword and Smites Hammer for grinding ownage, sure doesn`t feel hard. That being said, other classes may have it easier, but warriors arent in the least at a huge disadvantage towards the game.

Also, while the BM spec is great for fast leveling, I'm not sure it's the best for learning how to play a hunter. At lvl 50, I just started using (and learning how to use) certain abilities that an MM spec hunter would have needed much sooner, mostly because until I hit the upper 40's, my pet almost never lost aggro, and now that I've switched to an owl as a pet, I'm right back to my pet almost never losing aggro. Traps were pointless since the mob wouldn't run towards me unless I either shot before the pet got there or called my pet back to me, FD/Wingclip/Disengage were also mostly pointless because I almost never had anything get close enough to me. I can't kite, because I've never needed to.
This is not saying that being a BM hunter is bad, just that it's easy not to learn certain skills that can be very important at times as a BM hunter.

I probably should mention that I leveled a Hunter and a Paladin before I started on the Warrior. As such the lack of 'escape options' on a warrior is probably what made the adjustment so hard. I was dying in situation where the Hunter or Paladin could eitehr fight their way out or use one of their 'escape options' to get out of.

To give a different take on the question, here's my opinion.
The class you should play is ....
all of them.
None of us know what your playstyle is, what the most fun class for *you* is.
Spend one evening on every class in the first two weeks of having the game. Level them as far as you xcan go in one night (try to get to at least 10 so you can look at talents).
Then, and only then, make a decision which one you want to take to 60 and beyond.

I disagree. You cannot see the true potential of a class within the first 20 levels, so playing them all would be quite hard.

Thanks for all the help, this forum is great =) I played a rogue to lvl 10 yesterday, I think I will try a hunter tonight too... I am sure i will have to rebuild and start over again once i get a better understanding of the game, but that is half the fun, isnīt it?

Remember that one of the many beauties of WoW is that you don't have to reroll a char if you just want a different talent spec. You can wipe your talents (WoW equivalent to D2 skills) clean for a cost. Starting at 1 gold, then 5, 10, 15 etc up to 50 gold. The cost also gets reduced by 5 gold for each month not wiped.

I started out with a warrior a long time ago (about 20 months!) and I didn't know any better, it was a friend who got me into it, never played an mmo before, asked him what he thought would be best for me(and the group of friends that I was going to be playing with) and warrior was his answer. I loved the game, didn't know that I was "gear dependent", honestly I didn't even know what that meant! Never really had trouble leveling, just learned my limits and went on. You'll adapt to whatever class you play, just enjoy the road to 60 (70 soon enough) and if you get bored, try another class!

Rogue or hunter i think are the easiest. Rogues have little down time, can stelth to lots of quests, and have a nice handful of escape options, so you have fewer deaths if you pull adds. (more if you go engineering)
Hunters have a pet to help them, lots of different options for combat, and some nice DPS. I would think about getting Spirit to grind to 60. Most top hunters that hit 60 quickly said having a nice amout of Spirit really speed up there leveling.
