I mean what chars help the most in such situations? To me it seems like pala`s are the most usefull, because they have heal and they can tank for themselves.. Im prolly mistaken here, as I have never done an instance before, just trying to get a picture before I actualy do one.

Assist the main tank on his target, look after yourself as best you can and if you see the priest getting beaten on, be prepared to grab as much aggro as you possibly can and as fast as you can then run towards the tank. If you die, it's ok cause the priest lived =) Just my way of playing instances! Priests and healers will often see this warlock sacraficing himself to keep them alive and kicking!

Based purely on end game raid instances:

(Dwarf) Priests
Druids
Warlocks

Everything else is in abundant supply (excepting possibly very skilled tanks).

Regular instances, it depends quite a bit on where you're going. Warlocks are useful in BRD, Hunters are only really wanted in UBRS and Priests/Paladins are old time favourites for any of the Undead instances.

I couldn't tell you how popular a Shaman is, but I can't imagine them being the most needed of classes.

Rogues and fury warriors love them for that whirlwind thing they do. Have had a shaman main heal Scholomance for us which was amusing. Had no tank either. A mage, 2 rogues, me (warlock) and Shammie main healing. Just another one of those silly runs where we bounce aggro between all 5 of us and cry when we are at Rattlegore cause he hits so damn hard... But a successful run was had and the Shaman received much praise for managing to keep 4 dps nuts alive =) And being the only class (Dunno about Shamans though) unable to ditch aggro...well! I had fun! =P

What about mages? They can pump out a great deal of dps and even from range.

Meh.. They can learn to manage their aggro. Protect the healer!

That depends on your server and your guild. Our first Ouro kill had 9 Druids and 6 Priests...

Our alliance of guilds is overrun with Druids, Hunters, and Warriors; we severely lack Warlocks. On the Horde side of the guild, they're overrun with Shamans and Warriors; they're low on Hunters.

Playing a dwarven priest, i just don't get the protection you talk about here.

Everytime i'm taking on the hockey team in UD strat just before we enter the slaughterhouse I shackle one... only to have a hunter/mage/lock break shackle a few times before I can pull it totall away from the others and reshackle while someone dies because I am busy and can't heal anyone. Unless the pally is on his toes and keeps em alive with his heals.

Unless the pally is on his toes and keeps em alive with his heals. This is just bad communication. You've even got raid markings in 5-man groups now so you can just shove a big orange circle (or whatever) on a mob's head and say "Shackle this. Nobody else hit it". If they're still hitting it after that then you need a new group.

Anecdote:
Lowlevel Lock in group in Deadmines.
Warrior is a bit low for the instance so Healer pulled aggro from Sneed (the guy who pops out of the shredder). I burst the Searing Pains untill he stays off the Priest and then proceed to draintank him 'till death (his death :).

Protect AND soulstone the Priest indeed...

I did something like that once... at the core hound packs in MC, one of the tanks lost his mob, so I jumped off and grabbed the aggro, and pulled him back. After that, the tank couldn't get aggro off of me, so I tanked the core hound. The priests/druids appreciated it so much that now, even though I'm a warlock, I'm one of the designated Core hound tanks for my MC! Fun fun fun. Fun.

Actually, rogues and warriors may still prefer the grace of air (+67 agility) and strength totem (+61 str) totems. (Pretty nice +AP buff) When I used to run my shaman in an instance, our rogues told me the "whirlwind" totem actually nullify their poison (can't double buff their weapons?) I'm not sure if this was changed in a patches in the last 6-8 months. And although some totems are very situational, caster do appreciate mana totems (14 mana back per tick) or even the mana tide totems. Finally, the grounding totems can be a huge lifesaver at times as well.

DPS is arguably the most fun type of class to play. Therefore there is an abundance of them. Therefore they are easily replaced and also interchangeable, given special circumstances where things are needed like aoeing (lock/mage)or a few special skill/talents like sheeping (mage), banishing (warlock), sapping (rogue), tranquilizing (hunter).

You normally don't need many tanks, but warriors can switch and dps as needed and tank as needed.

Healers, support that can be filled with classes like shaman, druids, priests and paladins are usually more hard to come by.

What class do you normally try to do without? Another dps class. What class do you normally try to get all the time? A tank and a healer.

I have seen a group fall because all they had was low-dps tankwarriors and healers. Some fights just REQUIRE enough dps no matter how good its tanked and healed.

The lich in RFD for example, I have yet to see a working tactic other than nuking the boss ASAP. And this of course only applies if you are in the instance at the right level and not lvl60 t2 epics or smth.

Well, we all have to learn at some point :) And girls tend to not get a lot of flak over stuff like this, nor will they be kicked from the group etc.

On topic, I'll agree with Bouncy and say that healers and tanks are the most desired for instances - at least they are the ones that can be hardest to recruit, and the ones you really can't go without. Dps-classes are for the most part interchangeable, in that you can usually replace a Mage with a Warlock, a Rogue with a Hunter etc - unless maybe a specific kind of CC is required.

For the endgame instances, what you really want is a good tank - not just any Warrior or Druid. No group wipes as hard or as quickly as the one with a crappy tank..

Speaking of crappy tanks, if there's one thing that's guaranteed to make me cringe it's walking into an instance and seeing the "tank" square up to mobs in Beserker Stance with two swords equipped. For some reason I simply cannot understand, this always happens in Zul'Farrak. Gimme a Bear druid any day of the week.

I just had the same thing happen in UBRS. As a lvl 56 i got a basicaly free run through with a group of well geared 60's. I was DPSING drak. I pulled agro and had FD resisted. The war died somehow and i was up :). We actualy downed him but it was fun having my health go from 3500->100->3500 while meleing for all I was worth. Needless to say i went and cried a bit after. My first taste of a wars repair bill :)

GOD yes. I was there the other day with a smattering of 41-44's, a 53 healer (me) and a 58 "tank". Dude was polearm wielding. I said, "sure, he probably DPS tanks an instance this low". But dude was losing aggro left and right to other warrior (41), shadow priest (42) and me healing him. And then he wouldn't even try to get it back. Two wipes and I was finished with that PUGly group.
