This may be a dumb question for you but I'm just starting.
Can I use my GUEST PASS myself and than register the retail key and get free 40 day? If yes, will I lose the character I created during my 10 day trial when I upgrade to regular membership?
Thanks

You'll find your character a bit limited during the time period on the guest pass.

Could you be more spesific? (I assume I can use guest pass btw)

Trial accounts to my knowledge cannot trade with other players, use the AH, or use the mailbox. There may be other limitations as well.
It is possible that the trial account code won't work unless you've already established an account with the CD key. If so, then you're kinda SOL on the free 10 days for yourself at least unless you plan to upgrade it to a second account.

Yes, it can be done. However....See here (http://www.blizzard.com/support/wowbilling/?id=abl01931p) for the exact restrictions, in addition to further information on the trial system.

Thank you very much. I think I'll just start with retail key.

I would start out with the trial account. Since you have about 10 days to get up to 20, you can enjoy the game and take your time.
