View Full Version : The WoW South Park episode

Did anyone else see this?
If so, what did you think of South Park taking the piss out of WoW. I personally found it quite offensive, that a cartoon would generalise us all into weirdo ultra-gaming types...it couldn't be more wrong.
Views?

Heck, I'm one of those weirdo ultra-gaming types and I thought it was funny as hell.
If you can't laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at? I'd be more offended if they didn't deem us "worthy" enough to have a SP episode. However, personally I feel they maybe went too easy on gamers in general. Where's the love SP? Where's the love?

I thought it was one of the best south park episodes ever it was funny and it was from something I acculy play.

I loved it. It was taking the piss, but in a 'yeah, I do that' kind of way, not a 'look at all the weirdos' kind of way. If you can't take the piss out of yourself then you're sunk. The Leeroy Jenkins references were a big give away :-)

I loved the South Park episode, a few things I didn't like was that they had a couple bad areas where they messed up. Example, Stan's Dad: "I'm a Human Hunter" 1. No such thing. 2. When it first aired, they showed the toolbar, and it showed Sinister Strike =P. Another is that they said "Boars only give 2 experience." then they showed it giving 346 (I think) experience, then he levels.
They had a few mistakes, I still liked it, I think they could've made it slightly more exciting (Make instead of just 4 of them, make like, 8 of them against him. The other 4 could've just been a lower level than them because "we got grounded for 2 days" or something. That way they could've showed a couple people die in that fight, without losing their main characters who grinded to a higher level.)

I loved it too, and I have no issues with the way they portrayed the chars etc.
If you are going to make fun of something in the way they do, it's by taking familliar aspects of the subject and taking it to the extreme, kinda like a caricature. Just having them sit around and play alot of WoW won't have the same comedic effect in South Park as letting them get morbidly obese and take a crap in bucket etc.
So I personally did not feel offended in any way, I was too busy laughing my ass off and enjoying the show. =)

Actually, the mistakes were intentional....
KalziEast
22-10-2006, 08:35 PM
How would you know that? Lol... They took them out after the first time it aired also. That's also intentional I suppose?

Meh... Never got the appeal of south park. They tend to take everything too far but in a sophmoric way. It strikes me as satire for the short bus folks.

31-10-2006, 10:30 PM
Nah that's not it... it's like they beat you over the head with the joke. They have no subtlety whatsoever... it just loses it's humor at that point... at least for me. Like taking a perfectly good recipe for Lasanga and then adding 25 cloves of garlic to it.

Believe me I have an EXTREMELY adjustable sense of humor (you have no idea LOL)... I just don't get the appeal of South Park... tried to capture that idea in my cooking analogy. But I guess I failed... I love the type of humor that they go for... I just think they fail in the execution via overkill. I'm sorry though I'm taking this off topic. My fault for that.

I reckon it was a good episode, it really encaptured the world of roguecraft thing to, lol and the naked dancing, the bad guy had a plate helm on but that can be excused, haha and his arcance brilliance/summon scorpions/fireblots.
Some good lines from it to.
"how do you trade items again......."
"im just a noob"
Also at the end "yay we killed him, what should we do now", "now we can start to play the game".
So true, just shows that everything Wow is a grind.
The no emotion while playing as well "kenny cast arcane brilliance for the increased mana"
KalziEast
01-11-2006, 04:37 AM
There's no such thing as Roguecraft first off. Second, he says "Kenny, cast Arcane Brilliance for increased intellect".
Linch
01-11-2006, 04:57 AM
First off, maybe you should do a search or to about teh world of roguecraft thing.
There was a video made a while ago where a 60 rogue in nothing but a crap dagger (iirc) went round and slaughtered alot of people, showing how "overpowered" rogues seemed to be at one point.
Intellect, mana, really no really thanks for correcting that for me, ill sleep better tonight.
KalziEast
01-11-2006, 05:43 AM
I know what the video is, but there's no real such thing. Each class could do pretty much the same thing, especially mages and stuff.
Linch
01-11-2006, 05:57 AM
Much as I like people to make their point, I don't like gold selling ads
A quick google search will also get the roguecraft video up for you.
So that means there is such thing.
So now that you have made a fool of yourself, my original point was that the bad guy in the southpark episode running around near naked stabing people with a knife was obviously taken from this sort of stuff.
I never tried to argue that other classes couldnt do similar videos (and im sure they are out there) but there was no reference to that in the southpark episode.
KalziEast
01-11-2006, 08:06 PM
LOL, dude, I KNOW what the frickin video is, I'm saying that the guy was lucky, skilled, and he also died probably more times than he killed.

Back to the episode...
I never liked Southpark - but I realy enjoyed that episode, sure there were lots of 'mistakes' ie. plate helm, 2 xp, PvP, casting fireballs and summoning scorpions, trading the Sword of 1000 Truths after he had already equipped it, etc.
But it was funny and captured the whole essence of playing...
When he started leading the group and telling them what to do .ie 'Kenny cast arcane brilliance...' - he reminded me of my raid leader lol
I think Blizz was invovled in the whole thing don't you? Or there would have been major copywrite enfringement.
Gealach
01-11-2006, 09:19 PM
Blizz stated they collaborated with Trey and Matt on that epsode. They kinda had to for lipsynching and fight choreography in the episode.
Accuracy to the actual game is unimportant in the comedy, since it is intended for general audiences, not just WoW players.

KalziEast, I have a serious question for you. I want to preface this by saying I am not flaming or bashing you in the least and really have no opinion on the matter myself but just out of curiosity..
Do you intentionally start arguments/drama in threads?
I have read three threads today in which you seem to have started an argument/drama.
Do you enjoy it, or does it "just happen" due to your posting style?
Seriously I'm just curious.

Insult me too...but I am with Oatmealsmurf here. Sure, it was somewhat funny, but certainly not laugh-out-loud.
"Oh, you lauged at a fart joke? Then let's fling feces at you..that'll be even funnier then!" Exaggerating, but the essence is there.

And im saying that there was reference to this in the episode, im really not sure if your picking that up, ive explained it a few times, ask again i can try and draw you a picture
Also by stating this you obviously accept that this worldofroguecraft thing exists, which is in complete contradiction to your previous posts.

I said that there really is no such thing as "World of Roguecraft" as in, it's a lie, it's exaggerated, it's bs. That. If you could think in more than one way (What I'm trying to say here is that you're narrow-minded, if you didn't catch that either.) then you MAY have collected what I said.

Oatmealsmurf
02-11-2006, 03:23 PM
Kalzi... I don't see your point either... and I must say I'm a pretty smart guy. So what that in your estimation the world of roguecraft was an exaggerated phenomenon. That's unimportant... what is important is that it was a good inside reference that people who play the game would recognize. Makes no difference if you believe whether it was a legitimate imbalance in the game or if people just hadn't figure rogues out yet. Do you play a rogue or something and you're just being defensive?
rgirty
02-11-2006, 03:37 PM
Many people were referring to the game as "world of magecraft" after the recent mage review.
Gealach

Hmm, IIRC Kalzi does play a rogue, prolly forsaken. The behavior he seems to exhibit would get him beaten up regularly in a less civilized world.
I'll drop it there tho, since he's banned (again?).

He's banned (again?).
Pretty much, hence why he isn't answering.
Three day ban this time. When I say knock it off, I do mean knock it off, he still needs to learn this apparently. As I've pointed out to folks before, I believe in incremental punishment. First time is a day, second time becomes 3 days, third time a week etc etc etc. So, if you chaps wish to continue with this conversation, you're going to have to wait till he gets back. Either that or e-mail him. *shrugs* Your call.

Geal: I've played since Christmas 2004, yes, I play Forsaken. In other words, I was one of the FIRST UD Rogues on the server. I chose someone that I liked the look of, as well as the class I thought was best for me. I had just about 0 MMORPG experience (Besides playing Everquest with my Cousin who had a bunch of high level guys maybe 3 times.) and so I chose that class and race. I've always liked the Undead-feel. So there's your explanation as to why I'm an Undead Rogue.
Rgirty: I didn't see your post, and I'm not about to go look at it considering it'll just be a waste of my time.
Valas: Yep, I'm taking you on too. I had a message when banned that said "You've been banned for trying to get people not to join a guild" (The Christian guild forum I was thinking.) and lots of other things. I don't see where I did any harm in there, I think I was sticking up for the guild, not bringing it down. Maybe the "Valas attacks everyone (/hug =D)" bothered you?
Linch: I put it in a simple message. I said "Yes, there's a World of Roguecraft. I just think/know he died more than he killed." that was ALL I was trying to say, yet you guys kept going "Oh, that's not the point." well it was the point I was trying to get across, it may not have been your point, but it was mine. Get over it. As for the spamming LFG, actually, I just hung out with family and did a few instances and talked to my girlfriend and stuff.
Hope you all feel better about yourselves trying to make me look bad. =D Have a good day.

Nope, more that you didn't listen to what was said. I made it clear that I did not wish to see any other posts in that thread, barring those of folks who wished to apply for membership.
When we Mods say something that is part of our job as Moderators (like trying to keep a thread on topic, warning folks to stop with the flaming/trolling already, etc), then we expect folks to listen and comply.
You decided to post anyway with something that did not meet the requirements, as I laid them out in my last message on that thread. So, the hammer came down.
And one cannot claim that said posting did not contain a warning as to the consequences of ignoring said request.
Anyway, with regards to the South Park episode. It was ok, noted the "errors" and found that odd, but apparently that was part of the humour. *shrugs* To each their own.

Valas: I didn't read your entire post (All "9" (Even though it's really more like 7) paragraphs) because who would? Too long. I was just stating to the person (since you said yourself "ask KE" about the "I yell at everyone" thing.) that he wasn't the only one who has gotten yelled at. You did NOT make it clear like you think you did about "no more posting here". You could've put it in bold, or put it in all of the paragraphs, but you most certainly did NOT make it clear. You said it once (Now that I go back and read it.) and that was it as far as I can see.(F)
As for the "I made it clear that I did not wish to see any other posts in that thread, barring those of folks who wished to apply for membership." I didn't say anything against the guild. You're making it sound like either I was trying to join, or that I was bashing him. I did neither.
As for the South Park Episode, I think that they did a good job, but the "purposely put in errors" thing is not true at all. They completely removed at least 2 of the errors I saw that were the main ones after it first aired. (Considering I watched it like, 3 times since I was watching TV and playing WoW and it randomly came on, lol.)
Edit: Also, you could have closed the thread if you wanted it all to end, I also just realized that =).(U)

I never watched a single episode of SP. My friend showed this episode to me on video.google, and I loved it XD there were a couple of blank stares at such things like how in a first place could alliance gank alliance (did we actually have a "kill all" servers that I missed?), and the infamous "I'm a human hunter" thing, but other than that it was pretty damn funny.

Valas: I didn't read your entire post (All "9" (Even though it's really more like 7) paragraphs) because who would?
Apparently the other folks involved in the thread.
It's called personal responsibility, you don't want to read something, your call. But if you then miss something important, like warnings about bannings ahead if requests are ignored, your own responsibility.
And it's an old university trick. Always read the first and last paragraph about something, and you'll have a rough idea, what's being said and what the most important points are. And guess what was in the last paragraph.
As for the "I made it clear that I did not wish to see any other posts in that thread, barring those of folks who wished to apply for membership." I didn't say anything against the guild. You're making it sound like either I was trying to join, or that I was bashing him. I did neither.
I did not say you were bashing him or were trying to join him, I said..
Barring folks, who are intent on joining this guild, I expect no other posts here. And yup, this is an official warning, and cool off periods will be in effect afterwards if folks decide not to adhere to this request.
So any posts, which were not along the lines of: Gee, your guild sure sound interesting, tell me more Mr. Wilson. Or something to that effect, would not be ok.
Even, if you had posted something along the lines of: Valas is my omnipotent and omniscious God and I will sacrifice my firstborn to him, would've gotten you banned. Because it falls into the no other posts category.
Fairly simple really. I want to join, tell me more = ok. Everything else = not ok.
Edit: Also, you could have closed the thread if you wanted it all to end, I also just realized that =).(U)
Which is what some of the folks, who were bashing NotAshamed wanted, and which I had just ruled would not occur, because he had not violated any of the forum rules or Mod requests and was thus entitled to his guild recruitment post.

It was pretty gross, but SP always is, and I guess I'm glad I saw it.
I wonder how much they talked to Blizzard. They definitely get an
unusually non-negative spin in it given how much SP loves to slam
companies.
One thing I did appreciate is that, after being in several raids
how well they mimicked the asinine, snotty deadpan team speak
some raid groups have. The ones I know are good, but sometimes you
PUG with the wrong people.
Ah, the pain of being in a bad raid group...

Its South Park, they make fun of everything, anyone who takes them seriously must be bored! Its comedy, either way the episode was pretty funny. Also I speculate that they had Blizzards OK on the episode or else they may have been able to be sued.

I think the World of Warcraft episode of South Park was one of the best I've seen in awhile! I think the characters all getting fat (or getting MORE fat haha) was kinda funny, but definitely not a sort of stereotype I've witnessed personally. Almost all of the gamers I know and have seen pictures of are all SKINNY!
My fave part was when all the South Park students got together to beat the mean guy, and they showed Ike (the baby) as a Priest and he's like "I go poop in my pants!" and then just gets stabbed in the back all of a sudden.. made me seriously laugh out loud.
Oh first post btw, hello everyone. :):)

I actually have gone on myspace and youtube and watched all their episodes a lot of them were true (while others were stupid) this is funny and I enjoy watching these if you dont like that they made fun of you just dont watch lol.
