Ive had mine for quite some time and Im happy.

Currently Im using one of the N52 keys to shift over into "Red"-mode, but I would love to change that to one of the mouse buttons. I see no option for this in the programming software. Does anyone know if this is possible, or where I can find more information about advanced programming a N52? Thanks!

I put it on the mouse wheel of the Nostromo itself. I already have a wheel on my mouse, what do I need another for?

I use unshifted for running around, red for battle, and blue for roleplay junk. I wanted green available, but haven't decided how to use it yet. So, for easy shifting in a pinch, pressing the wheel toggles the red shift. Rolling it down toggles blue, and rolling it up cycles all of them.

If there is a way for an external device to control the shifting, I don't know it.

I don't think you can control the shift-states from an outside program at all, just as you can't program your mouse buttons using the N52 software. Like Daeanor said, the N52 has its own scroll wheel, with an up, down, and click option!
