View Full Version : noob question about non battleground fights

Hi, I've just started playing and I have a really noob question.

I was playing in Darkshore when people (human players) started calling for help at the Grove of Ancients. I headed down there and got killed so fast it was laughable by what looked like a human player (could be wrong). I'm playing in a PVE realm so I didn't think that was possible. Also, Onu, an NPC quest giver in the Grove was killed in this "battle". I'd been to the Grove many times earlier and never seen any fighting going on there.

Can someone please tell me what this is? I tried to find info on the net but came up empty. Are there battles that take place in the world, outside of battlegrounds, where people can attack both you and NPC's in the game? Or were these other NPC characters attacking? Do they happen regularly, and do you get anything extra for fighting in them?

Thanks

even on a pve relm you can voluntarly flag yourself for pvp if you choose to by:
- typing /pvp
- atacking an npc that belongs to the opposite faction (i.e. an orc atacks a guard in auberdine)
- atacking a player that belongs to the opposite faction that's pvp flaged(i.e. an elf types /pvp. an unflagged orc attacks said elf, and becomes flaged too)
- buffing/healing a player that belongs to your faction that is pvp flaged (i.e. elf a types /pvp. elf b heals elf a and becomes flaged too)
- zoning into a battleground flags you for pvp while you are in there
-picking up silithist in silithus or going inside a guard tower in eastern plaguelands flags you for pvp

to unflag wait 5 minutes and type /pvp again

hmmm...I don't think I did any of that. I was in Alliance territory (I'm an elf) and I was running down the road towards the Grove in response to the call for help when I got killed.

So these are fights that occur when Horde (human players) characters attack? Not some regular computer generated fights?

correct, some horde players came up and atacked Onu. You came down there and either healed/buffed Onu or one of the other elf/dryad npcs there, or healed/buffed another elf/human/dwarf/gnome player, or atacked in some manner one of said horde players (who would be flagged from attacking the npcs)

if you don't want to be killable wait 5 minutes and type /pvp to turn it off, and be careful
if you do, then just res and fight back :D

cool

Thank you so much for the information. One last question. Do I get exp for taking part in these battles and killing the human pvp's?

no exp

also, it wouldn't have been a human, would be an orc/undead/troll/tauren. there is however an item that makes them *look* human so that may be what was going on.

if the oposite faction player you killed is within a certain lvl of you or higher you get a HK and some contribution points (hit H to show it). for example a lvl 60 can kill a lvl 48 and get a handfull of cp, or kill a lvl 55 and get more, or kill a 60 and get a bunch, but killing a 47 or lower gets him no HK or cp. You know how you click on a mob and sometimes it's lvl shows up red (much higher), sometimes yellow (About right), sometimes green (Easy), and sometimes gray (very low). same for HK, you don't get them from players gray to you.
if you get at least 20 HKs in a week you get some ranking for the week and over many weeks gain ranks and are able to buy certain items back in town that you need to have a certain rank before they let you buy them....
all this is actualy kind of moot though, since blizzard is changing the system in next patch that will come out in next few weeks (on PTR right now) to make it so that you spend CP directly on these items (instead of using gold) and there is no ranking up involved.

sorry, by "human" I meant a real live person on earth, not the humans that are in the game and part of the Alliance. I vaguely remember helping some hunter on my way down the road, that must have been it.

Thanks again for all your help:laugh:

Don't know about silithist, but entering the towers in ELP does not autoflag you. You have to do it manually.

However, if you aren't flagged, you can't cap the towers I think.

Not 100% sure, as I mainly play on PvP server, where you're auto flagged in Plaguelands.
