View Full Version : Mage or Rogue!?
I have a level 31 Rogue, but am strongly considering stopping at 35 (so I can get his professions up to 300) -> and then making my mage.
Should I just get my rogue to 60 before I make my mage?
I want my 1st main character for 2 sole purposes. 1) Making gold. 2) Attacking horde with as many friends as I can get together.

Class doesn't have much effect on either of the purposes that you list.

Helping an Alliance guy goes against my better judgement, but I am in the holiday mood early this year so here goes a simple breakdown to help you decide:
Rogue: Gold gathering ability is decent, PvP is wonderful on a PvP server simply from a stealth perspective. WSG and AB rogues do very well in, but in AV they find themselves ninjaing towers, flags, etc. as they are easily blown away if spotted.
Mages: Gold gathering ability also decent (nothing beats a hunter for just cash grinding IMO), Mages are the glass cannons of WoW. They can deal out immense damage, but crumple very quickly if targeted. They do well in all three BGs but take a LOT of keyboard/mouse skill to be played well. The difference between a mage who can move well and one who can't is perhaps the biggest difference of any class in the game.
So it comes down to your playstyle. Do you want to come out of nowhere, stunlock someone to death and then vanish or do you want to fire away with spells while trying despartly not to get hit? Hope this helps your decision.
P.S. Since I play an imba Warlock I am not concerned with giving away free advice on two classes I have no trouble with <g>.

Hunters cash grind with less maintenance than any class (which is why so many bots are hunters). But if you are actually sitting at the keyboard yourself then nothing beats AOE grinding with a mage once you've perfected the technique.
This is of course not taking into account playing the AH... which is the best way to make money.
Ya Ive been making decent coin at the AH. Maybe ill start spending more time doign that. Ive been focusing more on grinding lately though. But AH is mainly how I have my Chanting to 225 already with my first main lvl 32 rogue.
I think rogue is a viable option to.
So basically I am debating between these three class's.
Rogue < Mage < Warlock
The things I will do "in order that I consider most important to me"
1) Killing oposite faction! :) ..... Im willing to do horde to. I have 300 gold on Smolderthorn that I traded Diablo stuff for.
2) BGs (any other group battles that I do not know about yet because I just started playing recently).
3) PvP - 1 on 1
I had heard that Rogue is the best dueler (1vs1) and definitely for low level Bgs 19 and 29. But now I am reading at higher levels rogues are not as good as Mage / Warlock ?
Would warlock be way better for level 60 Group events? Such as Raids, Bgs, AB, or whatever? And again #1 priority = attacking oposite faction!!

based on those 3, i vote Shadow Priest. Rarely did i lose 1v1's I always beat mages, epicced or not. Rogues unless doing the remarkable 100% stunlock would go down. Hardest classes were BM Hunters but even they went down 50% of the time or more.
Im in 5man blues with only +120dmg and 4k life at lvl 60. :)
My Priest can farm well, Lord Rocor in BRD, DM West Trash Mobs. Even vids of a priest soloing Scholo and LBRS.
As for BGs...nothing is better than healing that Tier 2 Warrior so he can continue to lay the damage down. Than shifting into shadowform and owning someone yourself. Many /applause /thank from those.

Unless things change between now and release, Warlocks are getting a tremendous buff in the next patch or expansion.
However for making gold I'd have to agree with everyone else here and say Hunters are and IMO will continue to be the best at it. Low maintenance (nothing other than ammo really) and zero downtime make them perfect for grinding, be it gold or XP.
And they're a blast in group PvP too, I've played a number of classes and so far the hunter has been the most fun in BGs by far. They can both deal very nice burst damage when spec'd into MM and even if they run out of mana they deal decent sustained dps. Proper kiting takes a while to master, but is very rewarding. They have a lot of utility such as traps and flares (nice for protecting flags) as well as minimap tracking and eagle eye (very useful for checking out the status of enemy flags in bgs from a distance) just to name a few. All in all, their strength in BGs is to maintain a big picture of the battle and feed vital information to everyone else.
In duels/1on1 they do very well too. Currently you can FD->Freezing Trap to freeze an enemy while in combat. This gives quite some time to gain distance, let your cooldowns tick off, heal if appropriate (personally don't do that in duels, but getting ganked and BGs is a different story) and finally get an Aimed Shot>Auto>Multi combo off for some nice burst damage and so on. The next patch will change things a bit but I doubt the class is getting any weaker.
So looking at your requirements, I'd suggest considering Hunters as well as the other 3.

Shadow priest with spirit tap has little down time for grinding if you wand the last 5 sec of the fight. (MB - SW:P - MFx2 MB wand). They rock in BGs and 1vs1.
Mages and Warlocks- bgs kinda suck at the lower to mid lvls because you are so squishy and you haven't really got your power till the higher lvls. But once you do its a lot of fun. I agree mages have to move a lot - I would say locks have to hide/kite. My 20-29 bracket lock gets ganked by rogues almost every time I start to fight. Higher lvls rogues learn to fear you. AOE and CC make grinding nice, but you do have to drink. For the grind I would say you either get a pet or better aoe. Aoe probably wins.
Hunter - above covers it pretty well. Stay in MM. In BG tab target to players with lowish health and aim shot them.
Rogue - I have more fun with this class in BG than any other by far. Grind isn't easy for me. Each fight is just that- a fight. With my priest - if things get hairy I get low on mana and have to shield/wand/shield/wand - but death is rare. Rogue- if my vanish/prep is on cooldown I can die very easily with just a few unlucky misses/dodges.

I vote for ice mage. I have a T2 rogue and T1+ mage and hunter. All are excellent farming classes, rogue for mining especially. But hands down mages can do farms that no other classes can. You haven't farmed until you've AOE farmed. Killing 5-10 mobs in a pull is easy. Plus a decent geared ice mage can solo elites that most classes cannot. Plus mages can make their own food/water!
Mages if played right in BGs do quite well. Don't run out and try to be rambo cuz ur gonna get crushed. If you stay with the team, and use range to your advantage you will pwn. Ice mages are hard as hell to kill when played right -most times I'll hit top kbs in AB/AV with my mage. My rogue is fun in BGs cuz I can 2 shot some ppl, but you get taken down pretty easily cuz most ppl retarget when they see a rogue pop.

Both rogues and mages can do the above well. What class you choose depends mainly on your playstyle.
Everyone says my play style... I cant really know my playstyle yet because this is a new game to me...
However, I can say that in Diablo... I was a PnB Necro kinda guy. Personally I think that says a lot about a persons "gaming style" because only certain kinds of players are like that.
I love bad mannered techniques. Such as Stunning people, Freezing people, Polymorphe, Stealth, Fear, ect...
Im a defensive type of person. I like to win, by not being able to lose. (Of course no one can "not ever lose" but you get my point) ... Like for example if anyone here has ever played magic the gathering... which I know a lot of people here have... I had a godly counter deck. Its been years since I played the game but I remember I won small tournaments with it, by never even doing damage to opponents on my own. All I did was countered spells, returned all of their cards to their hands, and made them discard their hands. And basically ran their deck empy causing them to auto lose.
I had no way of killing them other then to simply not let them kill me. That is kind of why I like the warlock so much because he can dot dot fear people. Fear is omg pownage!! Im only afraid of it not working in many cases....
The reason I liked bone mancer (pnb) in diablo was because it could beat "anything". Not a single build that I couldnt beat. OF COURSE That doesnt mean I 'won' every time. Im just saying I was capable of killing everything.
And for example I do not see how a rogue could beat a warrior if they were both level 60 wearing godly gear. I guess maybe it could if the rogue was way more skilled. But I like a class that stands a good chance vs ALL.
That detailed enough for ya!? :)
I am STRONGLY Leaning towards the Warlock?
Hunter is outa the question. I dont see anything sneaky or annoying he could do to people. (Such as Fear, Poly morphe, Vanish, ect..)

Sneaky is my style. In fact, ever since I'm a child, and reading my first murder mystery novel, I fell in love with the cloak-and-dagger world. And thus, fate has it that everytime I pick an RPG, I am destined to pick a stealthy, dirty and dishonorable scoundrel as my character.
And thus, here I am, undead rogue (because I had always been an undead fan. They fit my ideals of the perfect assassin). Since my character fits my style so perfectly, I'm very attached to him, especially since I christened him with a name which I had grown especially fond of. I had always considered the rogue as a part of myself.
You say you are a defensive type, the one who can last ridiculously long and really smack the enemy upside his head. I can only think of two classes which fits that mould: The warlock with their fear spells ensuring they are always having trouble actually touching you, and having spells that boosts his defenses and having a ridiculous amount of health for a spellcaster, or the Shadow Priest with his Shadowform turning him from a cloth wearer into the wearer of top-end mail armor, and his large number of really powerful spells and Psychic Scream. And Shadow Priest can fight dirty via Mind Control.

I have a high lvl rogue and mage. In my opinion rogue is faster to farm G with. But then I farmed with him early in the game when u got 15g for an essence of air and there was an elemental invasion every other day =) U that have been there know what Im talking about. 100g an hour without any problems.
The mage kills faster and if u team up with a healer u can just aoe how many mobs u want. In solo I feel the mage has more downtime since it needs to get mana all the time. With rogue you can just go go go and if ur close to dying just vanish. Example: In silithus on elementals i get through 5-6 without eating with my rogue. On my mage I need to drink more often (every third) cause if u run out of mana ur dead and u have to walk all the way from the GY.
Ofc this might be different depending on builds and gear but both my chars are T1ish.

1) mage for farming certainly. Altho if you want mine farming, rogue is better since with rogue you can farm mines inside caves and instances
2) any class is good for pvp-ing with mates. Well, maybe not a shadow priest. Most people will accuse you of choosing to play a non-healer. Which I find really amusing since you hear it from those playing non-healers themselves. It's basicly like hearing a warrior shoutin at another warrior for the wrong class choice :embarassed:
'HAEL!!' 'OMGZ!' 'WHY TEH &^%& DO YOU PLAY PRIEST IF YOU DONT HEAL!' I mean ok, I'd probably get the sense out of that line if I was playing a holy priest and not healing. But I am soooo obviously playing a shadow priest, caaaalm on

However, shadow priests are really good at solo. I had personally seen shadow priests in action and their survivability, especially against other rogues, and the amount of damage they can dish out is nothing short of impressive.
