each class can only put on a set number of armor types
all classes - cloth
everything except mage/priest/warlock - leather
only shaman/hunter after 40, paladin, warrior - mail
palladin warrior - plate

Items have level requirements written in their descriptions. Also, certain classes can only use certain gear, and sometimes some extra gear they can train to use. It would be helpful if you told us what class and level you are.

I am an undead
warlock
level 5
and i am still close to the original spawn point for the undead in the game i just ventured a little out of this area...i was killing a lot of zombie and picking up their loot and i tought i could equip myself with it but i guess not..
i just got some crude sword that says level 2 but i can't even equip it because as i said i always get that "not enuff proficiency" message that keeps poping up and annoying me....if i knew at least what to do with is i could fix it i guess....i was gonna try to put a pic here but i have to apply a patch first before i continue the game so i can't do it right now.
thanks for the help.!!

You need to be trained for some items...and swords might be one of them...Go to a wep trainer and ask...
Different wep trainers in diff. locations teach different wep skills.

Each class has different weapon requirements, i.e. means you can't just pick any type of weapons and use it for your class. Even if the class has the right to use (you can check by bringing up your skills book) you still need to learn the skill from a weapon trainer located in various towns for different types of weapons. When you start out, you only have the primary basic skill.

A hint: look at the item's description (its "Tool Tip"). If the text in the description is red in any way, it means you can't equip it.

Hi kokonut,
Equipping an item depends on two things:
(1) Your character's level and the level of the item.
(2) Your character's proficiency in using/wearing an item.
You are a level 5 warlock. The sword is a level 2 sword. This means that although the item's level 2 is equal to or lower than your level, you can use the item on that basis. However, your warlock doesn't have the proficiency to use a sword at the moment.
I am not familiar with all of the weapons that can be used by the different classes, however if you seek out a weapons trainer in any major city (ask a guard for directions) you will be able to see what in which weapons he can train your character. There are different weapons trainers that teach different things as well, so you may wish to visit them all.
Also, as amgyn mentioned..... you may pick up an item of clothing that you may not be able to wear even though the level is equal to or lower than your character's level. This is because different classes can wear only certain types of armour. For example, a warlock is a "cloth wearer". He cannot wear anything but cloth - no leather, mail or plate armour.
I hope this helps and good luck.
