Well im going to get WoW for christmas and the burning crusade about a month later (depending on when it comes out), and i want some opinions on how my computer should do running it. I know that no one can know for sure and it varies from system to system, but all i need is an estimation.

Alrighty then- My Specs.
-I am running a Dell Dimension 4550
-I use a Pentium 4 Processor
-I will be using 768 MB of ram
-I have more than 20 G of disk space
-I use the Nvidia Geforce4 MX420

So, I hope my computer can run it smooth.
Thanks in advance!

go up to 1GB of RAM and change out that video card to atleast a Gefore 5600, you should be good to go

1 Gig is the recommended system RAM for WoW if you want to be able to walk through a capital city on a busy day. I find WoW is not that demanding on the graphics card so you might be ok as long as you don't crank the settings up too high.

WoW is quite demanding on gfx cards as soon as you up the resolution to anything above 1024x768. Especially if you pull up the viewdistance a wee bit too. You'll be able to play on your MX420, but not on very nigh settings. And as mystnight and chaos said, 1 gig of ram is utterly recommended.

Been running on 768MB for half a year now. Sure, Orgrimmar lags, Ironforge lags even more, but don't they always?
Then again, I do have a pretty good graphics card (GF 7800 GS), but that shouldn't have much to do with RAM.

Uhm... that lag has nearly ALL to do with ram. I first had 512 RAM and lagged my way around the cities. Once I got 1024 MB RAM I haven't had a single lagspike. - Nearly ever

AMD Athlon XP 3000+ 2,16 GHz
1024 MB RAM
Geforce 6600GT

And I have all settings on highest, 1280x1024 + 2x AA and 4x AF

Nope. Havent lagged ever since I got 2gig :) I tried it on my old comp (for which I have 256,256 and 512 ramslots.

256=unplayable imo
512= fine whenever there's not too many people (aka, no raids, no capitals in peaktimes and pvp was VERY hard, i never seen so many CoC miss)
768= works perfect except in capitals and graphic intensive moments during raids/pvp,where the framerate drops to 20ish when it gets really bad
1024= veeeery small framedrops at IF bank (going from 60 to 45ish tops), hardly noticeable

And my new comp runs everything on max without ever dropping below the 60fps cap. last night in IF I think there were over 50 people running around and I was fine ^_^

PS: this is in the wrong section though. Hurray for mini-modding!

It's worth mentioning that increasing from 2 to 3 gigs of ram does ... absolutely nothing. From 1 to 2 is a small, but notable difference, 2 to 3 is so not worth it. For WoW at least. For Photoshop and other related software it works wonders of course.

It "runs" on my son's 1.5 GHZ P4 with 4200Ti and 512 MB RAM, but it is infinitively better with 3,2 GHz, 1GB RAM and a 6800GT......

Especially 1 GB RAM make all the difference....

I used to have one of those, but when I moved to EQ2 I had to update it. From what I rememer, the MX part of it basically means that it's an old GForce 3 card on drugs.

I run 256 mb of ram on a 4 year old ebay desktop. (exact specs inc later) I've played on it for the past 2 years in WoW, but recently Naxxramas encounters, mostly Thaddius, have been making the game near-unplayable.

I know I have available memory slots. and this isn't alot of information, but what would the advice be of the community. To puchase a cheap Dell, or upgrade to 1 GB of ram

Im probably going to be playing on low settings, and im sure I wont be going over 1024x768. The settings are mostly going to be set on low, so I hope my system can handle well.

EDIT: A cheap dell comes with 1G RAM and all are compatable with Vista, there pretty good. You can get the cheapest dimension for a good 350$

(go cheap dells!)

I'm running a 2.6ghz P4, 1 gig of RAM, and a Radeon X850 Pro. I am playing the game on 1024x768 but I still sometimes lag badly in the center of Ironforge/Stormwind.

...and some of the cheap Dell comps have graphic cards that - although the names are shiny like "7300LE" - are in fact weaker than a 6800 card.

...but at the end of the day it is all down to the budget you can spend....or your ability to build your own PC...

Here's what I run WoW just fine on:

1ghz processor(who knows what brand, it sucks that's all I know :D)
784mb DDR ram
128mb AGP radeon 9200 from like 2 or 3 years ago

I don't know if any of you guys played FFXI, but I think WoW is coded ALOT better than FFXI and WoW looks better all around, and for some reason it runs 100 times less laggy than FFXI did on this piece of junk.

I have a few things turned down to half, like terrain distance, but the others I have halved I could probably run full without much trouble, I guess I just have low standards. I think your PC will run the game just fine.

If your standards are higher than mine I'm sure the game will still run well enough until you start huge raids, by then hopefully you'll have time and money to make adjustments to your PC.

I got low standards, very low standards. Ever try to play The elders scrolls 3 morrowind for the PC? Very Very laggy, lowest settings, still laggy, the game has a poor engine. But I still played through it, the most experience i got in an MMORPG is runescape (when i was 10). I wont be doing huge raids much I guess, unless i dont have a choice. You wouldnt beleive the lag I put up with sometimes. I dont actually have the 512 MB RAM card yet but i will the same day i get WoW.
