View Full Version : Returning player needs help choosing class.
I'm returning to WoW to play with friends who rerolled on another server but I'm having the hardest time to choose a class to play. I've gotten sick and tired of raiding or trying to raid so this time I'm only going to PvP and do instances with friends.
So far I've managed, roughly in order of appearance:
PvE server (Horde)
---------------------------
60 Warrior (PvE server)
60 Shaman (PvE server)
41 Priest (PvE server)
30ish Mage (PvE server)
60 Hunter (PvE server)
PvP server #1 (Alliance)
---------------------------
46 Warlock
38 Paladin
40 Rogue
PvP server #2 (Horde)
---------------------------
39 Druid (PvP server)
60 Warrior (PvP server)
47 Rogue (PvP server)
I've basically narrowed it down to either Mage, Warlock or Shadowpriest (for that pewpew feeling). They'd be undead on a PvP server.
The warlock was fun to play although WotF could be annoying and I often felt like target #1 in BGs. Lots of buttons and micromanaging the pet was a bit of a turn-off since I've gotten so used to my N52 gaming controller that doesn't have alot of buttons available on it. Dots are fire-and-forget but their escape options against melee doesn't look too good.
The mage I quit because I found it boring to level. I don't have any pvp experience as a mage but they look like fun when seeing them in action in BGs. More mobile than the warlock and lots of instant casts.
A shadowpriest might also work. They look like they do good in pvp but I'm hesitant to play a healing class again.
It's kinda hard to decipher how the classes are going to pan out in TBC so I'm looking to you for your ideas.

Shadow Priest has great survivability and great burst damage and if undead, 2 great dots, WotF, etc.
Mages have amazing amounts of dmg, great dots, but are like glass cannons. Survivability not so good.
I chose the shadow priest and its great fun. I find it much more fun than the lock to be honest, but that depends on personal preference.
Oh, and if someone yells at me for not healing, i tell them to shut it and whip out thier bandaids cause I am out dps'ing them.

I would say Warlock.
Warlocks are AWESOME in PvP and also very useful for PvE.
What makes it so hard to choose is that they play so much differently 1-59 than they do at 60 with gear. So my low level experiences with them isn't much to go by and pvp videos are heavily biased. The only thing I get from the videos is basic ideas on how they're played. TBC complicates matter even further since there aren't many forum posts or videos about semi-geared pvp at 70 yet.
Warlock turn-offs from my days as a level 46 alliance warlock were undeads, shards, only using shadowbolts in instances and only getting off 1½ each mob (bad dps?). I also didn't feel like I had many escape or kiting options with melee on me. I was soul link + instant corruption at the end.
I only played a mage to 30 something (no pvp) and all I remember from that was Fireball, Fireball, Frost Nova, Fireball, loot, drink.
Shadowpriests seem nice with option to actually perform double duty as a healer when doing instances with friends. They seem very gear dependent (at least mana).

Sounds like you want to pick the mage. Just do it, leveling won't be that boring if you play with friends.

at the current state of locks, your not gonna even come close to loosing to a melee class...or any class for that matter. they are complicated to play, its not the easy mode i-win button people try to make you believe. bc, well, if that were the case, and they really were easy mode i-win button pressing ppl, then why dont mroe ppl play them? huh...exactly. there is alot to being a lock besides pressing death coil and fear. but back to kiting...you should be able to easily kite melee with those 2 skills i just listed. my other 60 besides my lock is my priest, and i dont know... its not as much fun. shield>mind blast>mind flay mindflay mindflay mindflay shield mindflay mindblast.../lame. both will give alot of ppl trouble though, but if your looking for pure pewpew go lock :P
mages are weak at pvp, or at least i feel they are. not alot of hp and really squishy, just my 2 cents there.
btw, why were you only using shadowbolts in instances?

Yes it is.
It is EXTREMELY easy to play a warlock in any situation.
Hydro: I've read your post in the past and I respect your opinion. Are warlocks really as overpowered as everyone seem to think? I haven't played much organized pvp and haven't had much trouble with them on my warrior so I cannot identify with all the warlock nerf cries.
I'm trying to find good pvp videos to see roughly how they play (movement, tactics). I'm torn between mage and warlock. Mage looks like more of a challenge and warlocks are rumored to be overpowered easy-mode.
Man this is hard, but I'd rather spend some time thinking about it now than get to 60 and then be disappointed.

You can get a lot of kills and beat almost every class with relative ease and relatively bad gear on a warlock, especially with certain specs (mainly Demonology and Affliction). Badly played they are good, played well they are unstoppable. The problem, of course, with levelling a class that is blatantly unbalanced is that eventually it will get nerfed.
If you want to play a class that is a mix between a mage and a warlock with nice group compatability too (in case you ever get into end game raiding) I would go for a shadow priest. Best of both worlds, and much more survivability.
Thanks Hydro, you confirmed my suspicions. :flowers:
I've actually been looking at shadowpriests again. I'm not looking to be a pvp god, I just want to have a fighting chance when out and about on my own, questing, picking flowers or whatever. And you're right, they're very group friendly even though I'll probably never spec out of shadow or raid again.
And what can beat the new and improved shadowform mount look! :cloud9:

well...sorry, im gonna have to retract my statement from earlier. ive not been able to get on since the 5th and since they got that huge buff.
aparently you dont even have to do anything anymore as a lock and you win, and felgaurds can kill people and the lock can just sit in the back and twiddle thier thumbs.
or .... go affliction and just put dots on everyone and that will kill them, you just gotta...twiddle your thumbs
