downloaded the patch this morning from blizzard without issue.
when i open the shortcut the news server comes up just fine. i click play and it goes away to a black screen. after a few seconds i get a flickering red box like thing in the middle of my screen... no text, no sound and no images. the only thing that i can do is hit esc and get out. i tried to use the repair tool, and it says it is not compatible with v.2.
i know the servers are down, but whenever they have been before, at least i was able to load the game properly.

I patched through the game client and it updated fine. Just tried to launch it and got to the login screen with the three news announcements. Running Windowed on my laptop, but I'll be applying the patch manually when I get home and will let you know if I see similar behavior on my desktop machine.
Sorry I can't be more help.

my best guess should be to reinstall it

I'm getting error #121 version mismatch errors. I've tried uninstalling WOW, then deleting the entire World of Warcraft directory, reinstalling from scratch, downloading the older patch AND downloading the new one and i still get the same errors. Looks like Blizz didn't test the install before they rolled it out.
This happens as soon as I click on "Play". After the initial reinstall, it worked well enough to download the 1.12 patch and after the 1.12 (or whatever it is) it worked well enough to download the 2.01 patch. After the install of the 2.01 I'm dead in the water

that will suck if i have to install from scratch. i had to on sat afternoon, and after downloading the patches and stuff it took the better part of 3 hours. if only blizzard would credit our accounts for the times we want to play and cant due to things like this....

I downloaded the patch off of Blizzard(edit, wasn't Filefront) updater, WoW is running fine. But yeah, sounds like you will have to do a complete reinstall =/
Did you have add-ons prior to downloading the patch? If so, you may try removing some of them from the WoW start-up folder, and try running again, could be screwing with a new addition or something. In truth, I really don't know much about add-ons, but i know people often complain about them during patches. You might wanna give it a shot before attempt a reinstall.

all pre-2.0 addons will be defunct with this new patch, but i doubt an addon is screwing with this login screen

Are you sure its not a Firewall that's popping up, asking you to confirm access?

Apparently quite alot of people ended up with this problem after the patch and they managed to fix it by:
'renamed my "Interface" directory and ran WoW again. Worked like a champ and created a new "Interface" directory. '

luckenbach1, as I expected, applying the patch after copying it from my laptop worked fine. The servers seem to be up in places now, so I could even login to Venture Co and play.

*Nods head*
I dl'd the patch, unzipped it and then made a copy of said unzipped version and moved it to the partition and folder, where I keep WoW. Ran the updater and things are fine on my end. Pretty much what the readme said I should do.
