When I logged on after the new patch of course none of my mods worked. They are incompatable. However, many of my guild members were stating that according to the EULA you agreed to today, all mods are disallowed and you can be subject to banning for using any mods.
I couldn't see how this would be. I clicked the red question mark at the bottom which took me to the new knowledge database. I typed in "third party" in the box. According to the database, mods are allowed (but not supported by Blizzard) as long as they don't give an unfair advantage to a player or as long as they are not malicious in nature.
This is the same as before in my opinion. My guildies won't use any mods now until they "receive clarification" (from whom I have no idea). They are even scared to use Ventrilo or Teamspeak which aren't mods at all.
I looked on many "mod" sites and they are all listing mods that have been reconfigured to work with this patch and BC. Why would they list them if mods can't be used any longer.
Does anyone have an opinion? Are my guildies "out to lunch"? What do you think?
Thanks for your time.

Using mods is fine as long as what they do don't amount to cheating. Blizzard has the right to disallow any mods at any time, as stated in the ToS, but all the EULA prevents you from doing is running third party programs that are separate from WoW but still interact with it (ex. bots). Mods are not third party programs, and Vent and TS don't interact directly with WoW, so you are just as safe as before.

The allowed UI Addons (aka mods) are written using the Blizzard provided LUA language. They should only consist of .LUA, .XML, .TOC and supplementary texture or sound files. They are run directly by the WoW client and do not have their own executable file.
If the mods you are using comply with these requirements, they are not considered illegal 'third party programs' by the Blizzard.
Your guildies are just panicking based on too little information on the subject.

Thanks. That's exactly what I was telling my guildies... to no avail.

Try this then:
If Blizzard did not want us to use mods, why would they provide an API for them, and have the GUI to choose which mods to use, etc.?
Most of your mods are now useless, because they use old scripting functions that existed in the last version.
In the new patch, a LOT of functions have ceased to exist and some mods won't come back (LazyXXX etc).
Just go out to your normal mod sites and find out if your particular needed mod has been updated by the author, so it is BC usable (all mods that work with BC, will work with new patch).

the mods that allow for and improved game play are allowed as long as they are not "intellegent" they are not allowed to target, despell ect unless u give the order. mods that simply thigs like numerical hp and that type of stuff are okay.
and to be honest if we were not allowed to use such mods and they did not make their own to compenstae i would seriousily consider leaveing as a healer i need to know the exact amount of health so overhealing is reduced and would be too stress ful tryin to judge health by eye

The general rule of thumb: Any mod that makes a decision is disallowed.
That's a pretty blanket generalization, but it's a good rule of thumb.

So the mod that decides which character to heal with one button that i was thinking of using in tough instances and later raids would be banned?

Yes, along with every other mod with similar functionality.
All target-selection functions have been removed from the scripting language, so they simply cannot work anymore.
