hey this is my first post here.
i am starting a new character soon and i was wondering what goes well with herblism...should i take alchemy? i have doubtes about alchemy because i heard that it will cost u less money to buy potions rather then to make them...is that true? in that case i rather take another gathering skill.
tell me what u think.

Alchemy will cost you a lot of money IF you DON'T take HERBALISM. If you can farm your own herbs then all it will cost you is the cost of the formulae. If this is your first toon you might want to stick to dual gathering such as skin/herb to make gold and then switch to alc. although now that I am raiding a lot I wish I had gone with herb/alc as opposed to mine/skin.

There are some cheap recipes that require only 'basic' ingredients (ie lowlevel, not to expensive) to level the skill, and the potions that you make sell for just under production cost at first. Later on some of the potions that you can make sell for quite a profit, but that is in a far future. If this is your first toon then 2 gathering skills are recommended

My experiance is that there are only 1 or 2 potions that make money before you hit alchemy 250 - the protection potions. Holy protection potion was always good for me. After that you start to make a bit - as with all crafting, the rare potions do better than commont.
Also remember that even if you collect your own herbs then it still costs the same as you are losing money compared to selling on the herbs. You only make money when you can buy the herbs from the auction house and sell the potion for a profit. The first real money maker for me was the superior mana potion at 265 IIRC - sun grass and blindweed - both plentiful and cheap on the AH.
Alchemy isn't expensive to level though and in TBC there is an alchemist only item that gives you 40% extra effect on potions!

Ok, if i got you right, you want to take something else with your herbalism. I'd recommend skinning, mining is rather good money-gain, but it requires for you to turn on the resourse-serch, the same thing that the herbalism requires, and you can search for only one type of resourses, skinning does not require search, and during leveling at least 75% of your mobs will be skinnable. So I'd suggest you take skinning with herbalism.
Other two profeccions that might go with herbalism is Tailoring and Enchanting. But those i heard to be moneysinks, so if you wanted two moneymakers then go for Herb and Skinning.

Alchemy rocks! Here's why:
1. With Herbalism, I gather a bunch of stuff. I keep a set amount of stacks of stuff that I use, and sell my excess. This way, I make money, but not to a point that I screw myself.
2. Since I can make my own potions, I'm the total "Potion Whore". I can buff, add damage, heal and rejuv mana, etc. As well, I have area specific potions that I use only in certain circumstances. Fire res is great, even at low levels, when grinding certain areas. And, on it goes!
3. Flasks Rock! Yes, they are expensive to make, and the recipes are tough to acquire. But, imagine having it available for you at any time. Not to mention, they sell REALLY well!
No other skill set is as inexpensive and useful as Herb/Alch, IMHO. Everyone needs potions, and they are consumable, so always needed. And, it isn't difficult to level in.

Herbalism and Alchemy are a good match. But, Alchemy is one of the harder crafting skills. Alchemy both requires multiple materials and produces multiple products. So, it will consume bag space like crazy.
With Herbalism and Skinning, you'll have plenty of money.

I went Herbalism/Enchanting, but that's solely because I wanted to be able to farm Fadeleaf/Swiftthistle for myself (a rogue, natch), and wanted a character with Enchanting. My warrior, on the other hand, is Herbalism/Alchemy, for the reasons mentioned by SSBarbarian. Slapping on Nature Protection Potion while smacking away on caster that fire lighting makes it a heck of a lot easier. Bag space is an issue, though, because not only am I gathering more herbs constantly, but I'm carring a pile of different potions around, just in case they're useful.
Honestly, if you want to go Herbalism, decide why. If you want to sell the herbs, either take Skinning for even more money, or take Enchanting, as it's actually useful to a Rogue (and anybody, really), and doesn't require a separate gathering profession. If you want to use your herbs, take Alchemy. On the whole, the items you can craft are more useful than any other single profession, per recipe you get. Engineering has quite a few useful toys too, but a lot of junk you typically need to craft while getting it to 300. I've used the vast majority of the potions my Warrior's made, and he's up to 260 or so now.
You cannot go wrong with Herb/Alch. It's a whole lot cheaper to level off of the herbs that you find and you'll have a nice progression as you level your character and your professions at the same time. I've avoided any alchemy leveling guide and made the recipes that I found to sell fairly quickly at the AH and for a profit. And in the process I have done quite well for myself.
A couple of people have made the suggestion to go herb/skinning since this is your first character. That option is also a great idea. You'll need the money once it comes time to buy a mount.
