Ive just reinstalled WoW on my comp after 3 months of not playing.

it installed ok,then when i started the game up,as normal it went into download mode and asked me to restart to begin downloading the patch(which is 12.0).

so anyway,i downloaded it fine with a nice d/l rate, got to 100% with no problems.

then it began the blizzard updater and this is where my problems have started.
It gets to a random point(highest ive got is to 82%) and then the windows error message pops up
'blizzard updater has encountered an error and needs to close'.
(it doesnt list the problem as a memory read error.)

ive tried installing an older patch but the same thing happens, downloads fine and then the blizzard updater gives up the ghost.

during the updater process,it slows the whole computer and seems to use a fair bit of memory.
ive downloaded from various patch mirror sites, ran my antivirus, spyware scanned, checked my firewall settings, tried updating in safe mode, downloaded latest windows updates, activeX drivers..pretty much everything you could imagine, but it keeps happening.

ive not had any other problems like this with any other apps, even the blizzard downloader and wow itself are fine, just the updater.

im currently defragging to try that option and downloading a fresh 1.12 patch to try again :undecided: but i get the feeling that the problem will remain.

any ideas as to what else i could try?
ill post the error log when it inevetably happens again.ive contacted blizz customer support and tried the official tech forum but its like banging your head against a brick wall trying to get a reply.Im going to scan these forums for any answers too.

ill look into running memtest overnight, clearing the %temp% files again and freeing up extra space on my HD.

My guess would be that you have some bad sectors on your harddrive and the download is encountering those sectors.

I could be wrong, but that is what it sounds like.

Have a look at this link (http://forums.worldofwar.net/showthread.php?t=382370). Not sure if anything there will be of help, but it describes a similar problem with some suggestions.

Completely remove WOW, and look through you registry and make sure all Reg. Keys pertaining to WOW are removed..... Try again from a mirror site.... FlieFront or FilePlanet are my two favorites to use....

quick update:

ive done a complete reformat of my PC to start afresh, gone to install wow and had several error #0 and error #132 messages pop up whilst trying.

so this with the random crashing of blizzard updater tells me that theres a possibility that my copy of wow itself may have become corrupted at some point in the last 6 months since i last installed.

its either that or the HD having issues :S
im not experiencing any other problems with installations on other apps, only WoW from my CDs and the associated downloads and updates linked from it.
so im now downloading the 10 day trial offer from wow-europe(only 30 hours to go,good times) which *i think* is the same basic package as any retail copy of wow but locked out after the 10 days is up.
so when this is finished downloading in a month or so  ill run it and see what happens.
if this copy has the same problems, then its my harddrive that has problems.

on top of this, ive realised that my prior installs might not have had all the correct files needed to run,BNupdate for one seemed to be missing.

How'd you re-format your PC... Pop OS Disk in and followed it from there or did you go to your cmd line and tell (read-type) for you system to write zeros to it's disk?

Did you do all appropriate driver installations before trying to install WOW?

yeah,it was just a basic reformat using the OS cd.I was going to try the write zero method, but thought id try installing a different copy of wow first.
if the problems still there, ill try the write zero method and hopefully sort it out.
