I have a tale to tell...
New computer $2000
Trial version of WOW $1.99
Full version of WOW $39.99
1 hour Long distance phone call charges $50
10 hours installing, uninstalling and re-installing @ $65/hr $650
8 hours downloading patches @ $65/hr = $520
6 Hours running through web based tech support steps $420
8 Hours live support with my ISP specialist @ $85/ hr $680
Total cost of trying to get online with WOW = 4361.98
Frustration of STILL not being able to log on to WOW = Priceless
If anyone knows how to change the server BEFORE you are able to log on I would be really interested in hearing how to go about it.
My tracert tells me I connect to the WOW server but I can not log on.

Im not understanding where youre getting the long distance charges, installation/uninstallation charges, tech support charges, and ISP support charges from....
When I call Blizz its a toll free number.....when I install the game, it costs me nothing....when I talk to tech support it costs me nothing....
Enlighten me a bit here as to where all these overly expensive charges are coming from?

Do you honestly owe that much money? Are you seriously paying that much an hour just to download material or conversing with somebody? If so, I would honestly suggest not playing this game. It will suck you in until you're living out of a cardboard box.

I think he is billing his time at $65 an hour which would make his anual salary somewhere in the area of $140,000.
If your long distance charges are that high you need a night and weekend plan ... or use the 800 number.
WOW is $19.99 at Target for full version
I am sorry you are unable to get online but without more info I don't know if anyone can help.

New computer $2000
- Buying a 2k$ computer just to play a videogame is silly, get a console.
and you don't need to spend that much... but you prolly took every option the vendor offered you like a force feedback wheel stearing to control your toon over wow. But why not if you have the money. I just hope it's not a 600$ crap with 1400$ markup like sold at Best Buy.
1 hour Long distance phone call charges $50
Where? prolly not blizz it's toll-free. to wish merry xmas to your gran'ma? :P
10 hours installing, uninstalling and re-installing @ $65/hr $650
My god... I think your computer is too slow, get a brand new one, yours is outdated. And you can do something else while the game install it self... like watching tv, talk to kid, do long-distance to wish merry x-mas...
8 hours downloading patches @ $65/hr = $520
LOL, 65$/hr to watch tv while you wait to a progress bar to reach the end...
6 Hours running through web based tech support steps $420
I wish I was paid 65$/hr to surf the web for pr0n.
8 Hours live support with my ISP specialist @ $85/ hr $680
You paid him? oh nvm, you are in overtime now... or maybe because it's the week-end...
Go sue Blizzard, and don't forget to fill the form at BBB.
I wait for your next thread called "WTF I got Hacked, blizz security is crap"
A new saga is begining....
Bought WoW when it came out for 40 Euros, installed it and played.
Total: 40 Euros....
Not as exciting, I admit ^^ (okay..and add 11 Euros monthly charge for 2 years)

anyway, i dont know what you are doing, but 7 000 000 players worldwide managed somehow to connect to the WoW server, so give us more details instead of this pointless list. What connection ? where are you ? what firewall etc ? then MAYBEE we will be able to help.

holy cow...This sounds so much like a troll....
If you seriously bought a new comp and did half of this just to play a game (and nothing else, or you can't attribute all of the cost to getting on wow...), you need to seek new opportunities....
Due to your high post count of '1' post, I remain rather skeptical....

8 hours downloading patches?
Good God, man, buy yourself a subscription to one of the many for-pay services that host patch mirrors. You'll thank yourself every blessed patch day.

Delete WTF, WDB and Interface folders and start the game, it'll take you to the screens where you pick options for servers rather than trying to log you into a server that's down. But don't pick the same criteria as the one you're trying to get onto or it'll select that one if you already have a character on it.
Looks like he is another 1 time poster who never comes back....

Can't trust my son with this sort of stuff, yet ;)

How to change the server before logging in? Although now you have me wondering if that is to a private server or simply to another of Blizzard's realms.

But if your account is verifyed while your server is off-line, you get directed to the "pick a realm" screen automatically?!
I do wonder what happens when the OP tries to logon?! Any messages?

That doesn't happen to me, the game tries to log me in to the server that's down and then gives me an unable to connect to server message. Very frustrating.

Would be useful to know

With so many places that provide the patches for free, you don't need to pay anything.

WoW takes 20 min to install (that's acceptable, WoW is indeed the game that takes the longest time to install of the games avaiable today) and 20 min to patch.
10 hours installing, uninstalling and re-installing @ $65/hr $650
So you kept installing/deistalling cause you thought the problem was with your installation and realized that maybe it wasn't the game's fault?
Way to go, and how did you rate the hourly cost of your precious time? Did you go in to humanforsale.com or something?
Open up all your ports in the firewall and unless you live in China, Russia or other communistic-wannabe regimes then you should be able to play the game perfectly. As one said, 7 million players can't be just wrong, can they.....?

Just general advice - you should never need to open all ports. That is like putting up a bright flashing neon sign saying "Port 137/9 here, please abuse me at will and length". The Blizzard Downloader requires that TCP port 3724 to be forwarded and you can improve the speed if TCP ports 6881 through 6999 are also forwarded.
That is only if you want to use peer to peer transfers. If you want to download directly from the Blizzard servers that option is available in the launcher, but you will get a much slower download. (Throttled) I believe you don't need any ports open for that (Unless you are firewalling outbound connections too), but will need to confirm that.
Anything else and you're opening yourself up for a world of hurt. To the OP - you will find more information on properly configuring your firewall here (http://www.blizzard.com/support/wow/?id=aww01154p), as put out by Blizzard's Support. They have more information on troubleshooting steps for the slow downloads here (http://www.blizzard.com/support/wow/?id=aww0819p).
