I recently skilled Jewelcrafting to above 300 in beta an prospected loads of ore while doing so :).

Copper
470 ores prospected:
- 94 Dust (you will always receive that) a stack of 20 sells for 10 silver
- 50 Tigerseye
- 44 Malachite
- 10 Shadowgem

Tin
140 ore prospected
- 28 Dust (you will always receive that) a stack of 20 sells for 25 silver
- 16 Shadow Gem
- 14 Lesser Moonstone
- 6 Moss Agate
- 2 Jade

Iron
170 ore prospected
- 34 Dust (you will always receive that) a stack of 20 sells for 80 silver
- 11 Citrine
- 11 Jade
- 1 Lesser Moonstone

Mithril
180 ore prospected
- 32 Dust (you will always receive that) a stack of 20 sells for 1 gold
- 16 Citrine
- 14 Aquamarine
- 12 Star Ruby
- 1 Huge Emerald
- 1 Blue Sapphire

Thorium
2910 ore prospected
- 582 Dust (you will always receive that) a stack of 20 sells for 1 gold 60 silver
- 208 Star Ruby
- 101 Large Opals
- 91 Azerothian Diamond
- 90 Huge Emerald
- 84 Blue Sapphire

- 17 Flame Spessarite
- 10 Deep Spessarite
- 10 Blood Garnet
- 6 Shadow Dreanite

To give some guesswork on the above numbers you could assume:

1) For each prospecting of any kind of ore you will get roughly 1 gem
2) The chance to get an outland gem from prospecting Thorium is roughly 10%

I assume prospecting destroys the ore.

You assume correctly. The ore is destroyed.

Does prospecting raise jewelcrafting skill? Like Disenchanting?

only for so many levels then it stops

Brenador i did some quick calculations based on your figures to work out the drop rates from prospecting

Copper
470 ores prospected:
- 94 Dust (100% Droprate) a stack of 20 sells for 10 silver
- 50 Tigerseye (53% Droprate)
- 44 Malachite (47% Droprate)
- 10 Shadowgem (11% Droprate)

Tin
140 ore prospected
- 28 Dust (100% Droprate) a stack of 20 sells for 25 silver
- 16 Shadow Gem (57% Droprate)
- 14 Lesser Moonstone (50% Droprate)
- 6 Moss Agate (21% Droprate)
- 2 Jade (7% Droprate)

Iron
170 ore prospected
- 34 Dust (100% Droprate) a stack of 20 sells for 80 silver
- 11 Citrine(32% Droprate)
- 11 Jade(32% Droprate)
- 1 Lesser Moonstone(1% Droprate)

*(suspect the droprate is higher on jade could do with a larger sample group)*

Mithril
180 ore prospected
- 32 Dust (100% Droprate) a stack of 20 sells for 1 gold
- 16 Citrine(50% Droprate)
- 14 Aquamarine(44% Droprate)
- 12 Star Ruby(38% Droprate)
- 1 Huge Emerald(3% Droprate)
- 1 Blue Sapphire(3% Droprate)

Thorium
2910 ore prospected
- 582 Dust (100% Droprate) a stack of 20 sells for 1 gold 60 silver
- 208 Star Ruby(36% Droprate)
- 101 Large Opals(17% Droprate)
- 91 Azerothian Diamond(16% Droprate)
- 90 Huge Emerald(15% Droprate)
- 84 Blue Sapphire (14% Droprate)

- 17 Flame Spessarite(2.92% Droprate)
- 10 Deep Spessarite(1.72% Droprate)
- 10 Blood Garnet(1.72% Droprate)
- 6 Shadow Dreanite(1.03% Droprate)
- 6 Golden Dreanite(1.03% Droprate)
- 5 Azure Moonstone(0.92% Droprate)

---
these figures sound about right to be honest with what i would expect of this skill

BTW, I believe you should factor in chances that when you prospect, only the dust comes out. In other words, you get nothing out of prospecting.
