View Full Version : So you are a newbie - suggestion for a sticky

A few days ago, I put up a post about having a newcomer section to these forums. In a different thread someone had suggested that perhaps what would be nice is a necomer sticky. I think this is not a bad idea (if we cannot have a newcomer thread - which of course imho would be the best option). In thinking about this I tried to envision what would this sticky look like. While I don't mind writing the sticky, I definitley would like to get input from other players especially since I am not knowedgeable about every aspect of the game (as I imagine no one is).
Here is a list of topics I think this sticky should have. Please feel free to add to this list - but remeber, this sticky would be for newcomers we want to assist not overwhelm - ie we don't need a sticky about advanced pvp techniques or putting together the perfect raid.
Topics to include:
What class should I be? What race?
What profession should I take?
How do you make gold?
A primer on pvp (not so much how to pvp but how to find the pvp arenas and how they work - game mechanics)
How to navigate your way through the game?
Resources that are helpful (links to useful posts, the map section)
Now that you not a newbie what next?
How to join a guild/why join a guild
Forum mechanics (ie how to find the information you seek, how to ask a question, where to ask a question...)
If people feel that this would be useful, I would not mind putting some stuff together (again, not my ideas I would just put the post together I would ask for help from the commnity on opinions or links to post that would answer the topics above and other topics suggested by the community).
Thoughts
By the way moderators, I am not trying to step on your toes so obviously if this sort of sticky would not be appropriate to these forums let me know.

However the forum mechanics bit ought to go first.

I like the idea though. But then, GWOnline.net has a newcomer forum and it works exceptionally well. It's fairly prolific though as their community spends more time on the forums than in-game though, unlike us poor addicts
Dagee, for inspiration go have a look at the WowWiki guides to starting a character. I found those, in their previous, less user friendly way to be incredible valuable.

Its not like anyone will read it. There will be some noob who posts a thread called
"im a noob what class is bestest?"
This thread will be right below the sticky called
"If you are a noob look here"

Dagee, I really support the idea of a newcomers area in the forum, or at the very least a newcomers sticky. I'd be happy to help to the best of my (unfortunately limited) ability.

So that's where that thing went..
Actually, it was stickied at one point, we had some stuff happen to the forums and everything went whoosh. We still come across threads on occasion, which are very much in the wrong forums, but that's where they ended up in after the great hosing.

I think a newcomer forum would be self defeating to some extent. If it suposed to be a place where newcomers can post and have questions can be answered then I would hope this forum does well enough. My concern is that not many long time players would visit a forum dedicated to being new to the game. The people asking questions there may not get complete answers since they are all new.
A sticky thread would be great though.

That is where catchy topics would help.
Out of curiosity, how do you old-timers read the forums? I'll typically go through "New Posts" which gives me several pages of interesting things to read. It's forum neutral as well

I clicky my favorites button and it opens community forum. I then skim the topic names and look at the ones that seem interesting or that have a lot of posts already. If it is by someone that I know and enjoy reading posts by I will open it even if the title isn't interesting.
I actually don't look at any of the other forums except community, I think this is a crossover from D2 days when the only forum I read was the Hardcore one.
Not sure if others do the same .... it honestly never occured to me to look at a New Posts thingy and see posts for all the forums ... where would this magic portal of delight be located?

Magical portal of delight. /laughs softly. If you look on the top bar, it's between Calendar and Search.

In my case, it's either spotting something odd on the main page (usually a gold seller, hack offerer, advertiser etc), or because I got a report on someone.
But generally I simply click the forum button and pick out various topics which seem interesting. Which is hence why it sometimes takes me a while to discipline folks, if it's a thread of 12+ pages. Unless, it's a topic I'm already involved in, then I tend to skip those.
And even before Mod-ship. Main page, pick something interesting, if nada, then check all forums, and then click the individual forums I find interesting. All also dependant upon how much time I got on that particular day.

BTW - I wrote one a LONG time ago....I was searching for mine when i came across yours. Do posts get deleted for inactivity?

Nope. But a Mod account got hacked at one point. Said person than ran roughshot over the boards. If, it hadn't been tossed into the wrong forum (As in every thread in one single forum, every other forum completely empty), then it had been hard deleted.
Folks then did one heck of a job restoring the boards to a very very cloxe aproximation of what it was before. Some things still slipped between the cracks though.
Quite possible that your post was one of those hard deleted.

Not that surprising considering the workload we get at times.

Me thinks it might had more to do with planning my PvP warrior and getting Razorgore down. That and recording my band's promo...
Oh wait - errr - yea, it was all the hard mod work I did. Honest.

Snowieken - Orly?
Gorny - Yarly
Elly - I hear he even...

Stigg, I know it's humor, but never ever in my life I will resort to the expression "orly". The thought alone would kill me.Out of curiosity, how do you old-timers read the forums? It's forum neutral as well :grin:So that's why I seem to find you in every obscure post on every even more obscure forum. As for me, I have my favorites - I first check the Professions Forum because that one is specifically appointed for me to moderate, but then I just browse the forums I feel interested in, going from top to bottom and bottom to top. Never used the "New Posts" feature, I like to know clearly in what forum I am looking at a post.

I tend to go Newcomew (recently), Community Forum, Off-topic, Mage, then random browsing. I tend to get some fun PMs from people directing me to the er.... more entertaining ones.
Back in the day (and he actually just did it for the first time in awhile!!!) Rushster posted a short list of some of the more "prominent" posts on the News section of the main page. Those were always a blast to go through!
Orly?
Yarly!!!!!

I personally check this here forum (surprise!), the druid forum (another surprise!) and at times the rogue/shaman/warrior/warlock/hunter forums.
I frequent the two PvP forums, the Raid forum and every now and then wander over into the Professions section.
Now that my UI thread was moved, I actually take a bit more active interest in that section.
What I avoid most of all is anything related to TBC. I got a Beta account, logged into it about 4 times in total and didn't even leave the starting zone.
Decided I'd rather found at at the proper time and actually be properly unknowing and surprised. I can't for the life of me remember doing an instance when people hadn't already figured it all out and I'd love to experience this stuff as a real 'first-timer'. Imagine how the stairs fight in Zul'Farrak would've felt if you hadn't been warned in advance...
That said, the entire promo is available for download from my band's homepage (listed in profile). It's rated 'metal', so consider yourself duly warned.
