View Full Version : Blame it on the lag!

So, I just ran the furnace in HFC for the first time. I was healing 2 guildies, a hunter and mage, and 2 PUG's (shaman and warrior). During our second encounter with mobs, we realized that our warrior had a full rage bar, which wasn't moving. I made a mention about it in a whisper to a guild member..and we watched during the next fight. He didn't taunt once. There wasn't a single sunder armor on any mob he was attacking. However, he WAS in defensive stance, and using a shield. The hunter's pet was taking all the damage. I, of course, noticed this, as I was healing...but I paid it little attention as pets have been given a big aggro boost.

Well, I made a mention that he should be trying to keep enemies off of the other members in the group. I told him he should be using taunt and sunder armor. He responded, "sorry guys. very bad lag." Well...we continue for the next 4 or 5 fights...he hasn't taunted once. During those fights, the mage or shaman would draw aggro, and call out "Taunt!" We bring it up again, and he says "yeah. weird. it's not working."

Because of excellent crowd control and a hunter who was very keen with his pet, we made it all the way to the final boss before finally giving up. We wiped twice at the second boss--because I ran out of mana from having to heal so many people. But those were our only 2 deaths before the final boss. When someone listed the damage taken, the shaman and mage had both taken more damage than our tank. The shaman had taken nearly twice as much.

I can't believe this was a problem with lag. I just can't. You'd be able to throw in a sunder armor or taunt here or there from spam clicking it. Instead, I assume he had paid someone to level his character to 60 (he was 61, when running the instance), and had never heard of either taunt or sunder armor...and hadn't put them on his action bar.

Anyone else have stories about arbitrary excuses for bad play?

I've heard it before. Lag is always a nice "excuse" for people to try and use when people call them out.

Fact of the matter is, if you can "auto-attack", then you can "hit a skill".

We used to have a warrior who would go afk ALL the time and blame it on lag. We'd make a pull and then watch as the warrior just stood there for minutes at a time.

Then we'd get.. "Sorry guys, lag".

We eventually booted him and told him he needed a new connection cause it just wasn't gonna happen.

Ya it sounds like the guy was a moron i'm a 61 warrior and MT for our guild alot. I've never seen lag that keeps you from being able to SA or taunt or do your damage absorbtion thing;) i usually absorb more damage then all the others in the group combined and barely do more damage then the pets:grin:

It very well could have been lag....

As a mage I have been in places where I can't cast a spell...or move...

Was the tank moving? was he not doing so eradicatly?

WHILE you are lagging, you are still carrying out your last movement....i.e. auto-attacking...which is why he very well could have simply NOT been able to sunder, etc.

AND if you are having lag issues, the start of a fight is when a lot occur....because the mobs are moving, as is the rest of the party. the screen might have not registered it properly and thus....lag.

You got to remember...some people ARE still using dial-up :P

it might've been, then...actually. Because I noticed that it would take him 2 seconds or so, after hunter pulled, to start moving towards a mob. But still...i'm not exaggerating when I say I didn't see a SINGLE taunt the entire run. It seems unlikely...but I guess it's possible. I actually hope it wasn't lag, because I mentioned him in my guild as "the worst tank I've ever seen." And that kind of publicity is harsh...if due to a simple connection issue.

I've been getting awful lag at times recently. Last night my ping was over 4k. Anything I said took 20s to appear in the chat, and I couldn't mount or anything. Eventually I got disconnected, and when I reconnected it was all fine.

I was running HCBF at one point and got a strange bit of lag where I was jumping all over the place, and things took 2s to do. I logged out and logged back in again and that seemed to do the trick.

So it could have been lag, but he should have tried to sort it. Maybe he was downloading gnome pr0n?

There comes a point though where you just dont offer to main tank if your lagging that bad and have to drop out. It's usually better for the group in the end.

Yep....it sucks so bad when that happens.

I was in ZG...cleared almost through to Hakkar. I was the ONLY one without the Zandalar Hero Charm....and it was MINE. I started lagging. badly. I figured nobody would notice if I just hung back and stuttered my frostbolts. It worked well for awhile. Then we got to (insert name of boss withthe skeleton mosh pit). It was my duty to clear the mosher skeletons when people fell to them. I finally sucked it up and told my raid leader I couldn't do it. It pissed me off...as I knew after saying that to her I would be asked to leave...but I couldn't risk my guildmembers like that. SO I bowed out and the heart of hakkar went to a priest who did a lot of PVP.

/sigh

I'm playing with constant 1k lag at the moment thanks to my rubbish university connection, I've not tried peak times since I also have exams to work for. Burning rage is never a problem for me, even as a druid without endless instant attacks (Guess I could fall back on swipe).

There are times that my rage will hit full, but only during a big lag spike, but even when that's happened, I'll have a mangle or Maul waiting to be let off the second the lag spike falls.

If he wasn't using rage at all, he obviously isn't trying to.

PS. I refuse to instance if my lag bar is in Yellow, never mind the Red that I'm used to at the moment.
