I live in the U.S. and have a friend in Holland that I'd like to play the game with. I recently bought the U.S. version and found out that it wasn't possible to do so because I was on my server and she was on hers. I pretty much wasted my money. I was told a few times since then that as long as I get the UK version of the game (which is the European version) that i will be able to play on her server. She plays on the Darkmoon Faire realm and i'd like to join her. Is this all I have to do in order to play alongside my friend? Thanks.

I believe so, but a quick call to blizz will probably remove any doubt.

Thanks for the reply...I asked a GM on the American site and they said I could do it but I wanted some gamers advice.

Yes, purchasing and installing a UK copy of the game will allow you to create a European account and play on any of the European servers.

Thanks, are you 100% sure of that? Do you know of the Darkmoon Faire realm???

Don't know if it helps, but I know the reverse is true. That if you have a English version in the UK, you can play on English servers 100%.
Hope that helps a little bit, but I would imagine it would be the same with the reverse on it.

In order to play on the relevant server groups, you will need an account there. So, if you want to play on US servers, you need a US account, and if you want to play on EU servers, you will need an EU account.
Mind you, having two current and active accounts, also means paying two subscription fees.
While, it's possible to juryrig your US client so that it can interact with the UK servers, you'd still need a EU account. In additon, the jury rigged system can lead to certain issues, when there's a patch number disparity between the two versions. Much simpler to just have the proper client for the proper server system.

I'm gonna cancel my U.S. account and just play on the EU servers.

I am. I'm in Europe and play on both the European and American realms, which as Valas mentioned, you need to sustain two separate accounts to do (although I understand that playing on both isn't what you're out to achieve). I have gamed with both Americans holding European accounts and other Europeans holding American accounts.
Darkmoon Faire is a nice realm. I had a paladin there for a while but I prefer RPPvP servers. It's an RP realm, PvE ruleset, and is less than six months old -- got a pretty nice community really, particularly since it hasn't opened for paid character transfers yet. I suspect you will find it a nice environment.
all that for a girl <3 how cute!
