What is the difference between the Off-Topic forum and the forums about WoW?
Sorry, couldn't resist. Moved this topic to the Newcomer Forum, where it is more suitable. (edit: actually, Aerath did it, while I was writing this post )
First of all, there's no shame in not knowing something - we are not some kind of elite forum where newcomers are belittled for their limited knowledge. These are not the official forums, for instance. The expression "noob" does not exist here, only in a non-insulting way. So when you post here, feel free to ask questions.
On a PvP server, you are only safe from being attacked by an enemy player in the first area's, so until you are about level 20. From then on, you will mostly reside in contested area's where you can get attacked by any enemy player in the vicinity, or alternatively, where you can attack them yourself.
On a PvE server, enemy players can only attack each other when they both turn PvP mode on by typing "/pvp". If you don't do that, you cannot be attacked by any player.

I could be facetious and say "PvP is fun" but not everyone enjoys the frustrations inherent in it. Be aware that on a PvP server you will be killed by players that are much higher level than you. (Ganked) And if you roll a Paladin, you have signed a contract where everyone of the opposing Faction will target and kill you on sight. (All slightly tongue in cheek)
But seriously, I love PvP servers. The random chaos of them, the fear of having your skull splattered all across your new robe - and the lurve of dishing out that hurt in return is simply amazing.
It's a rush.

PvP - Player vs Player. You can be attacked anytime anywhere by any player of the opposing faction. In practice you are rarely attacked in your starting area, and most Capitals are safe, most of the time. Clicky (http://www.wow-europe.com/en/info/basics/honor/pvpcombat.html)
PvE - Player vs Environment. For 95% of the time you can only be attacked by the opposing faction if you flag yourself for PvP, as indicated by Snowie above. However, certain actions/areas auto-flag you for PvP.
Most obvious are the Battlegrounds, but you are also auto-flagged when entering the Arenas in Strangethorn Vale (lvl 35+) and in Dire Maul |(lvl 55+).
You will also be auto-flagged in Eastern Plaguelands and Silithus if you take part in the PvP outdoor quests. Clicky (http://www.wow-europe.com/en/info/basics/worldpvp/azeroth.html). There are also outdoor PvP areas in Outland I understand.

So maybe thats why i am a prime target when i got to contested areas lol. I still like my pally but why are they a prime target. I had some totally ignore me or they would wave to me but like i said in another post i went to STV and 4 of them ganged up on me until i got a lil help and took 3 out on my own he he he.

Heh Horde doesen't love paladins as it is widely spread that paladins (and NEs) are generally played by 12-18 kids that cannot be trusted, think they can solo Nef and very often ruin their parties. I think there's nothing wrong with them as long as they behave reasonably, but that's my opinion. That's why Alliance has 70% of all WoW population and always lose in BGs... But nvm, that is changing with shiny new BEs, that are like a magnet to Western Europe/USA younger players that do not know what will they do with all money they have.

If you roll a char with a ripped off lord of the rings name on a PVP server you will be ganked mercilessly. This mostly applies to NE hunters called Legolas, Legolass, Leggolas but also dwarves called gimli, gimmli, gimlli etc etc
Levelling up your first char on a PVP server can sometimes be tortuous but once you've got a few higher level friends to back you up you will be fine. levelling your second char is easy as you can park the high level char wherever you are questing and deal out some retribution as needed!
