Depending on what class you are.

Warriors, shamans, pallys can....and a few others....druids I think too...

no, druids cant and hunters cant. pallys/shamans/hunters . If you are unable to equip a shield automatically it will be at one of the weapon trainers in any of the main cities. hope this helps.

Slight confusion, I suspect, due to Rowscarde's exact phrasing.

So just to re-answer the question in a slightly more clear format.

Warriors (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/warrior/), Paladins (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/paladin/) and Shamans (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/shaman/) know how to wield a shield.

The (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/hunter/) other (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/rogue/) classes (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/priest/) do (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/mage/) not (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/druid/) have (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/warlock/) that skill.

Hunter were nerfed from the get go. Back in open beta they could use shields, but when WoW went live (2 years ago), hunter could no longer use shields.

I guess the use of a shield + aspect of the monkey + mail would have possibly make them overpowered or something. heh
