At level 10 you learn the ability to Tame Beast.

After that, almost any beast is tameable....so you can choose anything (as long as it is your level or lower)

Personally, I recommend a Level 1 Toad...that's a bad a** animal.

You will learn the tame ability in your starting zone, and you have to do several quests to learn it, each one where you go out and tame a spesific pet.

Any of these pets are good, as are any other you see in the area you start up.
Like, if you are a Dwarf then you start in Dun Morogh. The three most likely animals that you end up with are either bear, wolf or snow leopard.
Whatever you choose is entirely up to you, they each have their own use.

If you want to know more about pets I suggest you search for "petopia" on google and your find a really good site among the top three entries.

yes but where to get the actual pet?

Once you get the taming quests from your hunter trainer at level 10, you will understand better what pets you can get, how to tame, etc. Any creature marked Beast is tamable. That is, all those animals you see about that you've been killing for quests, you can tame. There isn't one particular spot you go, or one particular person you 'buy' your pet from. You just go out into the wilds and use your taming ability. The only stipulation is as Stigg said, I believe, in that it needs to be your level or lower.

You could even attempt to tame an Elite pet (and many have).

Most likely, your first pet will be one in the area you're in. If you're a dwarf, then you'll have the choice between Boar, Wolf or Snow Leopard. In the Night Elf area, your choices are Screech Owls, Spiders or Sabercats.

But you're not limited to them though. You can run to any zone and attempt to get a different pet if you wanted. You want a pet that's close to your level, however, as they too gain experience and 'level' as you do, so unless you want to spend time leveling your pet, you want one that's already of near equal level as you are.

You can also have multiple pets, up to three, I believe, though you can only use one at a time. You can place your current pet in the care of a Stablemaster (usually found outside inns), and go tame another pet to use. Many do this because you can learn new pet skills from different types of beasts, and then train your main pet that skill. Just remember that a stabled pet gains no experience.

Most of this I gleaned from the petopia site (and no, not the pet retail store chain  ). One thing to be aware of is that they talk alot about pet attack speed, which in one of the latest patches has been 'normalized', in that they all pets, once tames, have an attack speed of 2.0 now.

Aaaaaand ... that's about all I know about hunters ... if you want more specific information, you can have a look in the Hunter class forum here.

But whatever you choose, remember the most important thing ... have fun!

Never played GW (Guild Wars, I'm guessing?) ... but sounds like the same deal. The quest is actually three parts, but no, it's not hard at all. You get a taming stick, and are told to go out and tame a certain animal. You do so, play around a bit with giving orders to your pet, then run back for the next part. Basically you do the same thing 3 times, each with a different animal in the area. Be sure you tame the correct animal (i.e. the names match exactly).

You get the quest from your Hunter trainer at level 10, so it will be hard to miss. After you get the taming ability, _don't_ forget to do the follow up quest!

what i liked when i started taming my own pet was taking something that is completely uncommon for my level... IE: owl for a tauren.

petopia is great for seeing what each pet can do, i personally enjoy having screech for my owl because i enjoy single pulls and it manages to not only pull aggro off, but if i remember also lowers the mobs armor down by 100...so all in all its a good trade off. most hunters use boars or cats because of the boars charge ability and the cats stalk ability. but to each their own
