View Full Version : Is it really easier to use "c" instead of "see"?

I was just curious, i see a lot of people using these shortcuts ( i don't know what the english word for it is) and i am seriously wondering if it is a faster/easier way of saying things.
I think before i type something, and mostly, forgive my short sightedness ( is that a word??) it doesnt matter in my speed/time i type something. So in stead of 3 letters i could use 1 letter...sure. But these three dots alone give away that i had to think about my next phraze/sentence/word-choice.
Is it really that hard to just spell out words and maybe make mistakes?
Just wondering what you think about this :)

I can't honestly say it's much faster, except for very long words.
It's also one of my pet peeves, as you can see from this rant (http://www.worldofwar.net/blogs/viewblog.php?userid=162790&entry=54) in my blog...

I think it is annoying as all hell. If you have a halfway decent ability to type, it is actually harder for me to attempt to shortcut words.

I've started ignoring people who cannot take the time to formulate their thoughts. If you're not willing to put the effort into communicating properly your thoughts just are not worth the time it takes to decipher them.

Well, it all comes from text typing, doesn't it, for when it cost more to send text messages to others using your cell-phone. Then it's way easier to tap in 'c' rather thatn 's' 'e' 'e' ... plus you often have text size limits. As an extreme example, if you only had a 12 character limit on your message, you couldn't type "I'll see you later." ... but you can fit in "i'll c u ltr"
The thing is, the culture has moved onto the internet, and somehow got a coolness factor added on to it, I suppose from appearing something like l33tspeak.
/shrug
I don't know. I don't see anything cool about it myself. And as an editor in life, and a writer at heart, I absolutely cringe whenever I see it. I don't see how it saves any real time for yourself, an often makes others take much longer to read what's said, if they don't just give up in the first place.
Of course, just seeing you Americans typing in things like 'color' rather than 'colour' makes me cringe. *tease*

Hey larissa -
What is your favourite colour?
:P My spellcheck actually says those are both wrong....
But your right....my phone service is 10 cents for outgoing messages with 5 cents per line to send and 3 cents per line to recieve
In my opinion....its worth the 5 cents for the extra line...

Admins,
could you close this please?
Gromash, Stigg, Larissa and tanitha, thanks for your thoughts on this. It has become evident to me that i have to make a choice in what i read and what i don't want to read.
I am sorry but i just wanted to vent ( i should have used the search button on this topic ). Thusly i dont see any reason to give some people the chance to make this another 900 post count :)
Once again sorry for this rather vastly debated Topic.

who said it would become a 900 post thing anyway thats what my introduction thing is for!
what is perfectly acceptable 'shortcut' today seem ridicules 5 years ago. and what seems ridicules now will be perfectly acceptable 5 yrs from now.
don't be so self-righteous. you don't exactly speak in complete sentences every time now do you?

To be very staight forward: yes, I don't have to hold "Shift" down. My left Pinky is still suffering from what doctors call "lazy" :wink3:
I get the point guys.

I use it instances when somethings decided to eat the priest and my party members haven't noticed.
Apart from that I only use it to take the mick out of people who use it ;D

I see you people who capitalize I at the start of a sentence and then don't capitalize it in the middle of a sentence.
You make me want to PUKE!
Most of the obnoxious anti-words in this forum are pretty vile.
Abbreviations are one thing, ROFL is fine, particularly when it is in common usage enough that people know what you're saying, but what bothers me are things like "wut" or "ne" it's only shaving off one letter what!! any!!! it's not that hard!!!!

I agree with you its totally pointless if for once people would use proper grammar.

I had a dream someday and I dreamt(or is it dreamed?) about having a lvl 60 paladin, but it felt so real that I decided to check it, but there was no paladin... too bad really, I've had more dreams like that
last night I dreamt that I had a new watch, but when I woke up it was suddenly gone

That's because in most languages the word "I" isn't capitalized.
A lot of people on the internet aren’t native English speakers.

It's not thier fault. Violence in video games made them too stupid to speak properly

I try and make coherent posts. Sometimes I do get lazy though. It doesnt bother me most of the time. There are a few posters on these boards though I just don't listen to at all because of thier posting style. I will never reply to anything they say, because it just hurts my head too much. I think it's because I have some inner voice reading in my head in the voice I imagine. And when people are posting stuff like "I dont no wut u c n it lolol !!1!  , " it makes me feel like im trying to understand a hyperactive 5 yr old. Its more about tone than shortcuts, I guess.

Meh.
I think it's kinda whatever people want. I use SOME shortcuts, like I say ty and yw instead of thank you and your welcome. But, I do agree - I think sometimes it gets a little out of hand.
I like to type in correct English grammar (or at least attempt it) because it's easy for me to do that. But whatever floats people's boats.
