View Full Version : Do you make female characters?

Or is there some drawback to the way people treat you in-game?

I hope not, NElves just look better as girls.

I have female and male characters.

My main is a female char, my guild knows I'm male, I haven't had any problem with it.

Only ever been asked once if I was a girl (and that was today on my druid)

I mix it up. I'm male but my main is female Human Paladin (lvl 44).

My next highest alts are a male UD Lock (lvl 21) and a female Gnome Mage (lvl 22).

I have not had any problems in the game based on character gender. My friend who plays a female NE is constantly getting people that will strip down and try to dance with her. She finds it most annoying.

I play mainly females (just prefer the models) - but again, my guild knows I'm male, and any randoms who ask me I just tend to ignore.

My first character was (is) female, as it was kinda traditional with me since Quake days. I regretted it at low levels, because morons would keep following me around and /flirting. That seemed to go away after lvl 30 or so though.

EDIT: Oh yes, also high level plate armour looks stupid.
An armoured bra is great unless somebody stabs you in your bare stomach.....

I am generally pretty nice and laidback myself, so I treat people nicely and expect the same. Being on a RP PvE server helps. That said, no idea why my main is a guy, as I enjoy my Undead priestess as much as the UD warlock.

Humans, elves and draenai are female because I loathe the male models. Trolls, Ocs and Tauren are male, because I have no liking for the female models.

The big dislike that I have for any undead is the rags look on some armour...guess that is why I went for casters ^^

I don't know somehow i tend to think that the char i play should match my gender. Almost as if it is a virtual representation of me, so since im male it should be male. Plus when i play with other char i tend to think of them as the gender of their virtual representation. But that is just me.

When I played DDO I had a female bard (how many hetrosexual male bards are there anyway...?) and never got any hassle. Only reason I don't have any female characters on WoW is that my g/f plays (hopefully more when I get her a seperate PC) and she'll play female characters.

I play both genders, my main is an undead female rogue and my current main alt is a male BE priest.

If you dont go tell people your a girl irl too (if you are not) then I wouldn't see any issues.

but it certainly has advantages to have female chars... as some cynic once said, the only "profession" that realy brings gold in WoW is having a female char.

My RL friends (who also play WoW) sometimes tease me about the fact that even though I'm male in real life, all my active characters are in fact female. I believe I have some fairly strong arguments supporting this, though - at least the way I see them:

Gnomes
My main is a Gnome Mage, and she's female because the male Gnomes look like weird garden gnomes. They also talk funny, and ... I just can't relate to them. The female gnome voice is a tad whiny as well, but it's certainly the lesser of two evils.

Night Elves
I have two NE chars, a Rogue and a Priest, and they are both female. Again this is related to appearance, as the male NE model looks way too bulky and husky for my taste. I'm also not confortable with a male Priest in a robe, that imo looks plain weird.

Humans
I have a Human Warlock alt, yet another female char. I don't like the Human males because they look too generic, and also because their run animation is ... well, strange :)

Draenei
Ooh, don't get me started on the male Draenei model.. It looks like an overinflated cow model, complete with billboard-sized chest and hooves instead of feet. The female Draenei also looks a bit strange, but it's certainly better than the male counterpart. I have a lowbie Draenei Shaman alt, also female.

It's a different story for the Horde races, as these with few exceptions look better as male characters. I don't play Horde all that much, but I have a couple of Horde alts and they are both male. The Blood Elf females look pretty good, but the males look pretty cool as well. I would under no circumstances create a female Orc, Tauren or Dwarf..

I get teased sometimes in game and people like to refer to me as a crossdresser. Still, my guild and my friends know that I'm male, and that's really all that matters. I have never tried to pass for a RL female in game, nor would I ever do so.

So I guess I'm shallow about my appearance, but at least I'm honest about it :)

If I'd be the same sex in real life as the characters in game, I'd be both o.O

It just depends on the race by and large whether I pick a male or female character.

All of my characters are as cute of girls as I can make them.

Why?

Because I would rather here a girl grunting and jumping and running around than a male...

While most of my mains are male, you get ALOT more favors as a girl. (especialy aliance side) I leveled up a female human priest to 50, and it was very easy, because if you wanted help, you got it fast, and if you wanted a drop in an instance, you were much more likely to get it. People are more polite in general to female charicters, even if your not female in real life.

It helps if your A) a healer B) a female human / troll / belf

Thats not to say that if you ARNT a female / healer people wont be nice to you, it just helps ALOT.

I made my first female character when the expansion came out. Overall I just don't like being a female... and I get enough annoying random tells as already. But when it came dow to it... the Male blood elves were so feminine to begin with that I decided I may as well just make a female.

strip down and dance? Wow this game does more than I realized LOL! I used to play Sony's Star Wars, and dancing was part of the game, but I haven't learned all the commands to dance or wave here yet.

I'm female, as well as my character. Being a noob (lol level 2, woohoo lol), I haven't experienced this yet... but that's ok... my big rogue undead boyfriend will just have to beat em all up LOL!

I've both, male and female characters. The only difference I've noticed is that more people inquire if I'm femal in real-life when I play the female character. No on ever asks that question or, alternatively, if I'm male, when I play the male character.

I hope not, NElves just look better as girls.

I have an even distribution of female and male characters. It just is how I decided to structure what characters I have on my server. I think it's funny when people automatically make assumptions that the characters are the same gender as the player. Heck, in D&D and other pencil & paper games, I've even played female characters (me being male) -- I'm more than secured enough in my masculinity to not be intimidated by that. I do tend to assume that characters I see in WoW are played by males, and am willing & able to be corrected if I am mistaken, but I'd rather assume the player's the same gender I am and be wrong, than to assume the player's the opposite gender and be wrong.

Although my main is male - half of my alts are female. Some races just look better as female (and yes I do think male clothies look strange in robes)

Just at the moment I'm levelling a female Dren Priest - I haven't had anyone ask if I'm female - maybe most players out there seem to think that you're the same sex as your character. I certainly get treated better than when I play my main.

I have had the questions like how old are you, and just last night - how much do you weigh? LoL

Male, and all of my characters are males. Except for my alliance AH toon - I made a female NE priest. I thought that nobody would notice the little priestess running between the mail box and the AH. I was wrong - there was a guy who kept whispering "hey hottie" and stuff like that. These things just freak me out.

Still, as a male human mage, I have to acknowledge the fact that I look positively stupid in robes. Especially with the big gorilla arms I have. For male casters, blood elves and undeads are really the best. I wish Bliz would give us some control over the body mass; it doesn't make any sense to have a schwarzenegger mage or priest.

I agree, if that wasn't blatantly made to be offensive, I don't know what is. slapped on an ignore, and reported the original post. Simply because of the multitude of implications made within the post, and the fact that it was written to be mostly irrelevant to the discussion.

-----------------------

To get back to the topic at hand, while I can understand people wanting their characters to reflect themselves, and as such be of the same gender, that is most definitely now how I view my characters (note -- my avatar is comprised of my alliance and horde "mains" -- one's female, the other's male, done in an "incredible hulk" style of shot). Like I said before, I've even done pencil & paper RPGs, roleplaying as a female character. Sometimes it just is fun to break out from the "comfort zone" for me.

What I find a bit frustrating are the people who follow the mentality of "everyone should play how I do, and if you don't you are wrong" -- like those who get upset at me when I'm on a female character, and then I tell them that I am actually male. I've had people call me things like "pervert" before, or even questioning my sexual orientation (which gets a good laugh from my fiancee, believe me). Just because you personally have a particular take on how the game is played, that doesn't make it the only possible way it can be played. As long as the way I am playing is not interfering with, nor impeding other people's game experience (by being offensive, or detrimental to their enjoyment of the game), I don't quite see how what I am doing in it is in any way worse than how someone else plays.

I personally had a strategy for my characters when I created them. I wanted an even distribution of race, class, and gender. There isn't an even distribution possible of classes (I have to double up one), so I picked my favorite of the classes (hunter) to have two characters (and the two are different -- one's alliance, the other's horde; one's beast mastery, the other's marksmanship/survivalist; one's leatherworking/skinning, the other's engineering/mining; one has a "dps" pet, the other has a "tank" pet; one is male, the other is female). From the basis of my two hunters, I then broke down all of the other races, classes, and genders from that.

The results were that I have a male orc hunter, and a female dwarf hunter. I have a female undead warlock, male tauren druid, female blood elf paladin, and male troll shaman for the rest of my horde characters. I have a male night elf rogue, female gnome warrior, male draenei priest, and female human mage as the rest of my alliance characters. It results in 1 of each race, 1 each of every class (with two hunters), and I have 5 characters that are male, 5 that are female. With 10 characters available on a single server, this works out perfectly for me.

I usually played more male than female characters in MMORPGs until I played WoW. I've just about stopped rolling male characters, because the male night elves and dwarves look terminally hung over and the male draenai run like a brick wall filled with helium. I'm not thrilled with the way most of the male horde models look either, but since my main guild is Alliance, that's what I'm most concerned with. Might have something to do with the fact that all of the male models look too serious (except the gnomes).

What I find a bit frustrating are the people who follow the mentality of "everyone should play how I do, and if you don't you are wrong"

Excellent point. There is no right way to play this game, everyone has different goals and expectations. My wife's favorite part of the game is the AH, she doesn't have a single character to lvl 20 yet, but last I checked, she's getting close to being able to afford an epic flying mount. While I'll play the AH, it's just a means to and end for me.

Tends to depend on the race I'm playing - Human, Troll and NElf tend to be female; Orc, Undead and Dwarf are male.

Although, saying that, my current character is a male NElf as he's a Druid - Warcraft lore has all Druids as male I believe ...

I don't play Gnomes (too small) or Tauren (too big), and I haven't had much to do with the new races yet.

I come from old table top RPG games. So I tend to play in that mindset even if I don’t actively role-play. As such I prefer to play male characters because I can identify with them. So it came as a complete surprise to me when I not only started playing a female dwarf hunter, but that she became my main character. Weird. All my other characters are male.

All my characters are female. That's because I'm also female and I feel more comfortable playing female toons.

Until the BEs came out, Hordeside playing a female wasn't that much different. On the Alliance side and on my one blood elf, I've gotten some guys with no social life trying to hit on me/my toon.

I have no idea where people are finding all these other people who give them stuff out of the blue just because they're female. I've never had this happen to me. (Unless you count the guy who wanted to give me his phone number...)

All of my played toons are male, all my bank alts are female (no real reason.). To see how differently I would be treated as a female I rolled a remale human on perenold, after getting to level 10ish stood near the bank in SW and brodcast a sexy plea over trade ...something along the lines of a new girl in town looking for some guys to give their sac to me..none to big etc....within 20 minutes I had all 16 slots without even moving....I continued bsing over the trade and after 1 hour total time, I had 77 gold, the above mentioned bags, and about 15 guild invites.

Just shows me there are a lot of people that want a little attention from what they think is the oppisite sex. (Yeah I am a dude which made "hitting" on dudes for gear od.)

Found it amusing and sad all at the same time.

I never thought people would care, but I got some questions with my one female toon, asking me why I would make a female toon when I am male. I thought it was kind of odd...I mean, who cares the gender of the toon? Does it matter at all? I don't think so.

I have asked people in my guild their gender, but that's because I spend a bit of time with them, and its nice to have some idea who you're dealing with.

Gameliel

WoW is World of Warcraft. It's a Massively Multiplayer Online RolePlaying Game. Keyword here is roleplaying. So technically, the gender of your character DOES matter!

That being said, I actually don't think it matters much. Unless you're on a RP server, I don't see many people remaining true to their in-game character; thus your choice to make your character male or female regardless of your real gender really doesn't matter.

I freely admit I create exclusively female characters, simply because they are more pleasing to the eye than the male characters, who for the most part have horrible models, faces, etc. IMHO it makes it much easier to level to 70 playing a character that looks good.

There are some pitfalls to avoid if you are male and create female characters, obviously. People can and will mistake you for a female. Say what you want, but people do treat others differently based on their gender. The trick here is to let someone know about your real gender before they do or say something that may be specifically aimed at you as a percieved female player. If you don't, it often proves to be very embarassing, mostly for them. Avoid it!

My 2 cents.

I play mostly females despite being a guy. Why? Cause if I'm spending several hours on end staring at a character it might as well be something visually appealing.

Yes it's digital, but the males in this game are all beef cakes which I find pretty repulsive in general. I don't feel like looking at a WWF reject for any appreciable amount of time.

Embarassingly enough most people I meet assume I'm female in real life. Something about my behavior and stuff, more than my model . . . not exactly reassuring.

I started off playing male's exclusively, I am male in RL, and I became disgusted with the Human Male model, casting animations, they way the run etc...

Since then i have made all female toons. But for me it is ultimately not the way the toon looks from behind, but rather how they look doing stuff in the game.

I will go thru both male and female models and check out they way they run, their casting animations, the way the jump, sit etc.. that is more important to me for some strange reason.

Which is why I don't play blood elf's the way they drew them casting heals and the like was, in my opinion very stupid looking.

I do love the female dwarf model for casting animations, they way she looks when she runs kind of a lopeing gait and the way she barks at me in an irish accent when I try to cast one more spell and I am out of mana.

Besides i couldnt see a male dwarf in robes.

oh yea I do get treated differently when I play my female dwarf priest and the people I am grouped with constantly refer to me in the feminine vs the masculine. I stopped long ago trying to correct them. I just let them think what they want. Some of my in game friends that you always say hi to when they log in, you know what I mean? Do act surprised when they find out that i am male. OH well.

yea, agree 100% with the guy above me. i go based off of animations and look, i dont just play females or males all the time.

that being said, my main is a female, but everyone in my guild knows im a guy. Shes a NE warrior, i just dont like how big and...crappy things look on the males, and the females look really good in end game gear, so the female was the choice. takes some time getting refered to as "her" or "she" in pug instnaces...but hey, it happens

Well, the puppet may be female but the hand is male... So it is fair for people when talking about your character to refer to her, she etc.

If they know you and you are male with a female character, they will probably refer to your character and you as he, him etc.

I've got a L70 NE female hunter called Fluffy.... I think she looks awesome and love to play her. I am now leveling scrape, a very testosterone charged male Draenai Shaman, but still get called fluffy in vent :-)

At the end of the day it doesn't matter, it is play... you are just playing a character.. the reasons may have nothing to do with Freud - sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.... :P

I usually play female characters as Alliance as I prefer the models - the males seem too bulky to me. And those female gnomes are just so cute! I really dislike the female models of the horde characters (female taurens - ugh...) so I play horde males. Orcs and Taurens should be bulky...
