A quick question of etquette. I got a rogue to unlock some boxes. He did it for free and I got some cool stuff. He opened 2 heavy copper boxes and 1 steel box, and I tipped him 2g50. How much do you normally tip?

1 or 2 g, depending on the attitude of the service provider.

20s - 1g, depending on box quality level, and how many boxes I'm having him opening.
If I get phat loots out of them, I'll give him a little more. :)

1g...but if something that sells for quite a bit comes out, I'll send them 10% of the successful auction value in the mail along with an explanation (that was 10gold once)
I like the satisfaction of creating that goodwill, knowing that he is now much more likely to feel good about his community, and willing to help out in the future with random acts of box-unlocking.

As a rogue who can open anything put in front of me, I have opened many boxes and been tipped twice. It's not a big deal, but a little something would be nice in return for the service I give...afterall, that skill didn't get leveled overnight. I spent hours leveling that skill and trying not to drown while picking lock boxes.
Now when I see someone "looking for rogue to open Eternium Lockbox" I occassionally pst with a 1g asking price. Same response everytime "I will find someone who will open it for free."
A little frustrating since, I pay for portals, I pay for buffs, I pay for summons. Spread the love a little please we all have need of each other skills and we all spent time getting those skills...tip a little. I don't care if it is 10s or 1.5g, as they say, it is the thought that counts.

I always tip 1-2g per box (unless they are in my guild because they refuse to take my gold) but I just send them to my smithing toon if they are less than Mithril in quality and make keys to unlock them.

I typically have friends unlock boxes....That being said...Free, means FREE.
If I feel obligated to tip, it isn't free. On occasion when someone has opened a box for free, I've given them the item, if I didn't need it....
If they want a fee, feel free to either accept or decline...

As a rogue I never ask for a tip, but often get one. Usually around 1g. A simple thank you is sufficient for me. However, if someone doesn't tip, doesn't even say thank you (as has happened a number of occasions) I'll reply with "thanks for the tip". Often I'll get a response back of sorry. Sometimes people will respond meanly. Once I got a mail from someone afterwards with some food in it. It seams some people don't even think about it, I feel bad for their RL waiters and waitresses.

I had two boxes opened by a very nice rogue and gave him a tip of 60s (they were low lvl locked boxes). he said I didn't have to tip and once he saw the boxes I wanted opened he refused to take my money. I told him I wanted him to take the tip because it was my way of saying thank you. he did and then the next timeI logged on I had mail with my money in it! he said that since he didn't ask for tips he felt like he was stealing from me and as he was level 60 the 60s I gave him was a drop in the bucket to his pocket book! he went on to say that he will often stand on top of teh bank in Org opening boxes for free because when he first started someone did that for him. giving back to the communite.

Usually I tip 20s (for the early boxes) - 1g per depending on level of box.
My usual is roughly 50s a box, with about a 50% markdown on that to a guildie.
So I would give a guildie a 25s-50s per box even though they dont ask for anything.

On topic, I don't expect a tip on my rogue when I open a box. Most rogues don't either as I had gotten quite a few delayed trades after putting in a tip.
I do find 1-2g slightly silly... I mean, most of the times the item you get doesn't even sell for 50s.
As a rogue, I will ignore people that just go "open plz" or "open" and then pop a box in yer trade screen. No matter what else you're doing. I refused one guy 5 times before he got the basic idea of asking nicely, at which point I opened his box.

I try and have a guildmate do it...but if I can't..
For lower level boxes, 20s tip. For level 50+ boxes, 50s. If its a sell-able blue, ill give him 1g. It does take a lot of time to level up lockpicking...

As a rogue as well... I will often unlock boxes for free. Tips are great, but I never expect them.
The only thing I ever expect as a rogue is for people to ask me first before opening a trade. It's a pet peeve of mine when someone thrusts a box in a trade window and says "open plz". When someone does that, I won't unlock the box.
I do it as a form of kharma. I believe that showing good will in this simple task comes back to me from time to time. Plus... it's only a very small effort for me to pick a box for someone.

my going rule is 50s for anything below mithril. 1g for anything above. I understand it takes them time and effort to level their lockpicking. Even though they are offering the service for free I still like to give a little back. Let's all be honest 50s and 1g is not that much at all.

I generally get guildies pop them for me, but when I have an non-guildie pop a box, I generally pay them 50s-1g.
I look at it as a crafter doing a combine for you where you provide the mats... a little kindness makes friends... and they'll be happy to do it again for you next time.
A little off topic, but I'm curious... has anyone noticed lock boxes getting relocked when they change hands? A couple of weeks ago, I mailed a eternium lock box to a guildie to open. She opened it, took a peek inside and mailed it back.
It was locked when it got back to me. I mailed it back to her to open again. She thought she might have mailed the wrong one back by accident, but no, same crap in the box. She unlocked it and handed it to me in a trade window. Locked again! The only way I was able to get the box opened, was to put it in the will not be traded section for the unlock.
She just mails me the stuff in the box now =]

whenever someone asks to open a box, i offer to do so, no mention of tips, no hard feelings if none are given. when i'm bored of grinding and i'm sitting in SW, IF, etc waiting for AH to sell or friends to log in, i throw out a macro offering to open boxes up to my level (i think i'm on steel right now), and state clearly "tips appreciated, but not nessecary". and i noticed the above "relocking" issue shortly after 2.0.... went live. no idea why blizz would have changed the option, but that seems to be what's happened

My rogue was my first char and has way too many days /played on it. I've maybe opened boxes for 200 strangers and believe I've been tipped twice, maybe three times. Maybe that's a US/EU thing, not sure. The thing I find pretty amusing is that the only tip I can actually remember was from a farmerbot mule who had me open around 15 boxes then handed me a stack of healing potions. Made me chuckle abit.
