View Full Version : Grouping with a Warlock

I've finely convinced one of my best mates to give wow a go. He's on his last days of the trial and he is pretty set on being a warlock.
We've decided to make a character each and level them up together. Which is a nice change for me as being a hunter I don't mind playing solo and spec for it.
Only problem is I do flip back and forth with my descisions and it took me long enough to go with Hunter...finally choose due to enjoying range chars in past and wanted to mainly be solo (and also the less downtime with soloing).
My question is what do you think groups well with a warlock in a 2 man situation?
I was thinking going for a pure melee char and it would be nice to do some DPS. But worried about Arm/Fury warriors as they don't get much of a shoot in later instances/raids as its hard enough now with druids Vs Prot Warrior let alone spec for DPS. Same also worries about going rogue with the the fact its another pro-solo also don't know how fun a rogue can be from lvls 1-14 (yes i know thats not far, hence the asking) it seemed 'sinister - sinister - gouge - eviscerate' and watching World of Roguecraft hasn't helped. Shaman Enchant just seemed off-putting considering they have on one 'melee' attack, yeah i know theres shocks, totems and buffs...but still only one melee action (until stormstrike).
Other choices are Mage & Priest. I love idea of being a healer and plus your a needed char in later instances/raids but being a person who loves seeing those numbers appear I'm not sure it will be fun enough, mages...well I have no problems with mages its just be nice not being a ranged character for a change.

lol i do have a tendancy to babble on im afraid.
And yes I would love to actually be a wanted member in instance/raid but out of them I can imagine it being a rather 'dull' class.

priests are versatile. They have 2 main builds. Shadow, and Holy. Both are obvious to what they do. Thing is u said u would be levelling with your buddy who is a lock. Well I would probably suggest going a priest DEFINITELY in this case. Im currently taking a break off wow, but from what ive heard in BC... locks n shadow priests really shoot dps off the roof together. Oh and u can respec "oh noes hes a shadow priest, oh noesss he's nots hes holy, oh wait hes shadow, oh wait... "" lol
hope this helped.

You wanted DPS, you want to assist your Warlock buddy (Tank?) and you loved the idea of healing. Hmmmm.
/seal clap
That to me suggests a Druid might be a good call in this case? Alternatively - have you considered a Shaman?

Paladin? otherwise a druid, shaman, or shadow priest...

Shadow Priest. Great DPS, some healing on the side, and Warlocks simply love Shadow Priests to itty bitty little pieces. You have no idea. Plus, if you wipe, you have Soulstone!
What spec is your partner going into?

Not sure it'll either be curses or destruction as its the spells he is enjoying most.
I haven't consider Shadow Priest as I assumed you were the most hated 'spec' class in the game..altho I suppose thats not till shadowform where you commited...
Oh and I didn't mention Druid because I don't like the shapeshifting side..which with druid is pretty the main point :)

The spells huh? Well, it won't ultimately matter which one he choses, since both utilize Shadow damage very heavily (although Affliction is practically pure shadow, while Destro can get sidetracked into fire). Besides, Vampiric Embrace should be plenty of healing for a Warlock, because Warlocks get their own life drains. And Warlocks, the well played ones, will almost never have full life bars when grinding because of Life Tap.
Besides, if either of you ever end up badly damaged enough to need more significant healing, you can always cancel Shadowform and toss out a few before switching back. Think of it as Shapeshifting lite. People only hate Shadow Priests because instead of the heal ***** they were expecting for their instance run, they get a DPSer who isn't all that better at healing than a Priest who hasn't spent any of their talent points at all. Mind you, you can still do a fair bit of healing, you just won't be good for endgame healing. You'll be fine as long as you know how to heal (which comes with experience and a little reading)
But hey, I ain't you. You pay for the game, so you get to make up your mind ultimately.
Hot Tip: Bandages are your friends. Farm cloths and make bandages... :wink3:

I have a lvl 66 lock and there are 2 classes I absolutely love grouping with.
#1: A shadowpriest is the class I like grouping with the most. Using Curse of Shadow and his Vampiric embrace, shadow vulnerability stuff makes both the locks and priests DPS go trough the roof. And with the combination of Fear both classes can use, they can take down just about anything.
#2: Paladin, really enjoyed grouping with a paladin aswell. His buffs are very nice. And his ability to self-heal and keep tanking endlessly goes very well together with the warlock ability Life Tap which allows the warlock to DPS nearly endlessly. (Life Tap turns HP into Mana)

Paladins are very very nice to group with warlocks. They can heal and tank at the same time along with the locks pet as he casts. Maybe try a shaman too.
Priest is prolly the way to go

One of my guildies is a 63 dest. warlock. I am a 60 feral druid. Sometimes I hate questing with him because even though I tank, to keep mobs off him, its hard to hold aggro when he is criting for over 2k.
Naw, we actually are really good together. He turns health into mana, I heal. We keep going. It actually works really good. We dont have much down time at all...
IMO Druid is the way to go. Thanks to TBC, we got some REALLY nice gear in the outlands. Tank, Rogue, Heal, Cast.. It does not get much better than that.

As a 65 lock, I'd definitely have to say a priest. I advise choosing a DPS class because it will be hard for you guys to find an instance group together, as most groups looking for more don't usually have a problem filling in DPS roles.

I'd say give priest a shot (but I'm biased level 70 priest). Definitely spec shadow for leveling as you can still heal any instance just fine once you know what you are doing. There is a sticky in the priest forum with advice about leveling a priest and most of it is still true even though it is old. As others have stated shadow priests can increase warlock damage (shadow damage that is) and if you want to go holy later you can always respec you're never stuck being a shadow priest. And warlock dots + sw:p = ouch.
