Hello, I'm new to WoW and new to this forum. I hope you can help!
As the title says. The iBook is a G4, 756MB RAM. My internet connection should be at around 2MB although you know how arbitrary that is at busy times.
The game plays ok most of the times. However when I enter 'busy' areas and especially at night, the whole thing slows down and my character moves very slowly, the picture is choppy and if I'm in combat I get killed because it takes me 5 minutes to move!
I tried changing the settings (detail/graphics etc) within the game as the support page advises, but it made no difference. Now if that fails the support pages says the following:
If you are experiencing poor frame rates, but you notice that the problem is primarily occuring when you enter large city areas, try changing rendering modes between ‘OpenGL’ and ‘Direct 3D’ modes. All graphical rendering modes are currently being optimized, causing some systems to work better under certain conditions.
Open the World of Warcraft folder on your hard drive.
Open the WTF folder.
Open the Config.wtf file using a text editor, like Notepad.
Choose either SET gxApi "opengl” or SET gxApi "direct3d"
Save the file and start World of Warcraft again.
First of all, does anyone know if can I do that on a Mac? And when they say choose either SET blah or SET blah blah, what do they mean? Do I need to type that in? I can't seem to find those lines of text.
One last thing, I am not sure whether having Skype on makes things worse (I talk to my friends during the game). Initially I thought it did but then sometimes we are connected and the game works fine, so I'm really not sure. I've just done a test in Stormwind (the worst place for me) and with Skype on but not talking it makes no difference. However with the test call on, it takes another 30% CPU.
The CPU usage seems to be 40-60% in quiet places, but even goes up to 90% at times in places like Stormwind.
My brother in law also plays on a Mac, but he has an iMac Dual 2 Core so it's a lot more powerful. He occasionally get slow-downs in busy places but nowhere near as dramatic as me.
Any help would be appreciated.
