I'm an enhancement Shaman level 70. I been enhancement from level 10 and raided with him to Naxx. I changed spec a couple times to suite a situation but only for short times.
I want to run more 5 mans for rep, keys, quests and gear (yes fun too). Being a Shaman the best way I see to get groups faster for 5 mans is to go Resto for healing. I beleave Enhancement have a place but i know Resto has a beter place now not in 3 months. In 3 months people will be looking for Enhancement Shaman. IMO.
Now to my question. I will be rolling on Enhancement and healing gear. I plan on telling groups ahead of time my intentions. Do you think its ok for healing specs to roll on DPS gear in 5 mans?
I feel healers need a life outside of an instance but I also understand after my 1st 60 levels how Hunters feel about Shaman rolling on DPS gear. Then again I know how Rogues and Warriors feel about Hunters too. lol
Tell me what you think.

With a few exceptions, I think it's fine to roll on off spec gear, especially if you've told your group in advance.

Not many classes will roll for your gear anyways except maybe hunters that have +AP gear drop.

Of course!
...especially if you tell them ahead of time.

I personally think it is ok, just for the fact alone, you can be the best healer in the game, but it won't help you grind for whatever you need solo...
it always has been for me at least:
if it's cloth dmg gear if there is a shadow priest and he needs it i will usually let them have it, if not ill roll against a mage/lock for it (as a holy priest)...
If it's really good it's up for everyone that is cloth but only cloth no Oomkin druids, mainly due to the fact we can't wear leather so why should they steal cloth away from a class that needs it? but that's a different topic imo.
Of course, just tell the group beforehand. And, if they object, just politely point out that DPS Gear is the reason you came to the instance, and since you cant get it theres no point you being here, so sadly you won't be able to heal them. They'll probably change their tune then.

I don't personally think it is wrong to roll on off-spec gear. Personally, I don't like carrying around the extra junk in my limited inventory on most of my characters. But I don't think it is wrong to do that...

Not sure if we really want to turn this into a 'who has a right to roll on what' discussion, but we'll see how things go.
To the original poster, I see no problems with your decision, escpecially if you announce your intentions before hand. Most players will understand your needs, much like my own groups usually understand that even though I'm a healer, I do need damage gear as well to actually complete quests outside instances. I don't think I have a burning need for it that a dps caster would, but if it's not a big upgrade for said people, and I don't just pass to begin with, they are usually nice enough to let me have a chance at it.
Now, to the quoted text, I'm not sure if I'm just misreading it, but I don't see why you would pass for a Shadowpriest, but not for a Mage or a Warlock. They are damage dealing classes too, and have a need, if not more of one, for such gear, as it is their only focus. Unless it's +damage to a particular school, it seems that the generic bonus is to +damage/healing. It is a pretty hard topic to discuss, I agree. I know the feeling, as I'm nearing 70 now, and I'm still wearing that Goldweave tunic or whatever it is from one of the first quests in Hellfire for my questing/dps gear. I would dearly love a new robe/tunic to replace that with, but for the most part, such gear would more logically go to the mage (not that it's actually happened, just no luck for the chestpieces with me!). So while I feel I have this need, I don't think it's greater than the need for mages/warlocks/shadowpriests, because for them it's they're entire game, for me it's just half.

My guess is the original poster might feel that shadow priests are typically overlooked for such armor, and as a cloth wearer, he feels it is polite to bow out of a roll and let the underdog get the loot from time to time.

Personally I think it's fine if it's for whatever specc you are playing atm and anything else as long as everybody is fine with it. I'd give whatever specc that has it as an upgrade when it drops dibs on loot I could use for an offspecc. If that class doesn't want it whoever needs it for another specc may take it.
I see this pretty often when playing with holypriests that take whatever loot I (mage) don't need instead of it being greeded. I do the same thing for priests on my feraldruid even though I'm going bak to resto in a few levels.
Priests on damagegear, shamans on huntergear etc I'm fine with whatever as long as it's an upgrade from their currently used gear.
One of the main reasons for this is that a lot of classes can use just about any type of loot. Offspecs are also a lot more viable now than earlier.

One more vote for "nothing wrong with it if it's said up front."
I'll pass if the piece of equipment would be a more appropriate upgrade (note, more appropriate upgrade, not just more appropriate, I'll roll against someone if it's a minor upgrade for them but a big one for me) for someone else in the group, but I don't ignore any of my roles when considering loot. Heck, I've got three sets of gear for my druid, and I'm considering a fourth. My Hunter and Priest have two sets.
I still try to be conservative when I do roll against someone else, because I'm not exactly sure how they value the gear.

Well guys, you made my long thought out respec to Resto for my rep, keys, instance qsting, and gear much easer to withstand. I actualy love healing but i play Enhancement because outside of an instance a full Resto shaman is not cutting the musterd for me. Can you imagine trying to kill a mob with 47+ points in Resto? When i go Resto it will be EarthShield and MT. As short lived as my Resto life will be, I will enjoy it.

Of course, enhancement shammies are the weakest that they've ever been, arguably. The reduction to the pew pew really is making people QQ. I am rethinking my attitude to my shammy, whether I want her to be my nominal "main", switch back to my recently nerfed but still raid viable 70 hunter, or simply just go back to one of my priests.
