I can't seem to get the key strokes correct. I have run out of breath twice because I could not get my char to rise to surface. I am an alliance human warlock lvl 12.
Hi Jesse,
I generally use Right-Click and Mouse movement to face my swimming character towards the surface, then "w" to swim 'forwards', ie: up.
I still consider myself a bit of a noob though, so I could be totally unaware of a better way to do it.
Hope that helps. :)

There are a couple of methods. If you are a mouse user, you can hold down both buttons and orient your view so that you swim upwards. If you're used to this, it's by far the easiest way to swim (and I suppose fly, once you get a flying mount).
If you just use keyboards, the Insert and Delete keys angle you up or down. This is a bit more coarse, but is effective enough. Then just use your movement keys to swim around, using the Insert/Delete keys to angle yourself in the proper direction.
I hate swimming myself. Even as a Warlock (in which you will get a spell called Unending Breath, which is poorly named, as I think it actually only lasts about 10 minutes. ), I would recommend when you go to Gnomeregan that you continue to go after Noxious Fallout (I believe that's the elemental's name). One of its drops is the Hydrocane, which when equipped allows you to breath underwater. No time limits, no 'uses', always on and working. It's wonderful. I still have mine to this day (and just made it to 70 last night! Go me! ). If you use ItemRack, you can set it so that it will automatically equip the Hydrocane as soon as you start needing to hold your breath (though it won't automatically re-equip what you were using when you get out of the water, so watch out for that).
Also, you cannot swim out too far or too deep. If you see a yellow Fatigue bar, turn around _immediately_ and swim back the way you came. If the Fatigue bar runs out, you die.
