We just got a little memorandum saying that our running water was off for the next couple of hours. So....in an attempt to get out of work, I wrote the following letter to my boss. I'm still waiting for a reply....but I thought yall should know....if you work in the U.S. and your companies water goes out, you can follow the same procedure.
ICO – XXXX
With the release of the notice “Bathrooms and Running water out temporarily” precisely 13 minutes ago, I am in fear of the repercussions upon your career if any government official should stop by at this moment. As it now states in OSHA 1910.141.b.1.i, “Potable water shall be provided in all places of employment, for drinking, washing of the person, cooking, washing of foods, washing of cooking or eating utensils, washing of food preparation or processing premises, and personal service rooms.”
With the lack of running water in this facility at the current moment, your career is being placed on the line. If a health agent were to come to our facility, we would be forced to be shut down and a notice would be placed on both our company and the current President’s (i.e. you) record.
For these reasons, I recommend this facility be shut down until proper water conditions are supplied.
In the “Employee Manual” that was provided to every employee upon work status, it is clearly stated that, “If inclement weather or other unforeseen act causes an employee to be unable to work, their pay shall not be reflected for the missed hours.”
From this statement, I believe that until the water issue is fixed, each and every employee shall be allowed to leave at this time and still accrue all benefits for their normal hours worked.
Very Respectfully,

Very tactfully stated there, Stigg. Do you think your boss is gonna go for it though?
OSHA policies and Employee Handbooks aside, how many of your coworkers have bladder/bowel problems bad enough that they'd be deemed eligible for paid time off due to the lack of running water? Is a few hours without running water enough to dehydrate you or any of your coworkers?

Hmmm....sounds like I need to go spike some people's coffee with laxitaves and turn up the heat.
No, he won't fall for it, nor will anybody ACUALLY have a problem with it.
But at my company, that's what we do. We build things and write documents on how things need to be built.....so OSHA is a second language to us.
I just thought I would have a little fun with my boss.

Ahh...I didn't know you were on "Hahah, joke's on you" terms with your boss. That makes it much funnier.
Also legally, if you were to take the rest of the time in which the water is out off, there is nothing that could be done about it.
Either way you go, it's nice to know that there is some humor in the upper eschelons of the corporate ladder.

We're not. He hates me. I hate him. I think that makes it even more funny.
Remember the thread, "I hate my boss" thread I started a while ago?

Yea, thats him. I don't expect him to give in, I just wanted to poke him a little bit more.

Yes, I remember the thread now that I've reread it.
I would've CCed everyone else that works there, so they know what their legal rights are, and see where it went from there. It would be really funny if everyone decided to walk out til the water came back on.

Did you have the guts to send it? Or are you just telling us? (If you actually sent it, there is not much fuzz on why he and you don't get along...heh...your job is to keep him looking good, not help him look bad...)
To the issue, the facilities may be turned off for emergencies....they don't need to be provided for every second of an eight hour day....

15 minute rule...
And yes, I sent it to him....and yes, I just got my reply.

Thank you for your concern for my current and future business career. I am well aware of the OSHA requirement that you are referencing. I assure you I have contacted the local plumbing company to have a rush fix for this matter. I am also well aware that your residence is less than two minutes drive from this office, so in case of a dire emergency, feel free to leave work and head home for use of the bathroom. Your timesheet shall not reflect the time used to do this.
At this point in time, seeing as how well you must have reviewed the Employee Manual, I must also point out Section 2.1.3.1 “Alcohol at the Work Place.” Take note, this does not refer only to consuming alcohol while at work, it also refers to consuming alcohol on lunch breaks and referencing, “I am certain I will be incoherently drunk tonight” while in the workplace. This type of behavior reflects poorly on you and the company in whole. You have two choices, keep the volume of your voice to a minimum when referencing such behavior or do not state such things while at work.
I am also fairly certain you have more than enough work to be doing instead of looking up OSHA requirements.
Very Respecfully,
XXXX
i want to reply with
"But what if I need to take a dump now?!?!"
Eh, I'm done with it...just wanted to throw some stuff into today's posts as they were so lacking this morning.

Wow...you're not allowed to talk about getting drunk? I know he said "keep the volume of your voice to a minimum", but most people with an iota of common sense (you included) wouldn't boisterously ramble about getting "incoherently drunk" at work. Is he playing "get a little, give a little" with you? I think you should inquire about the emergency poo situation. I know, sometimes you just can't hold it for two more minutes.

Haha, I think I am done with attempting to annoy him.
His reference is to a comment I made earlier in the week when my other boss said I would need to come back in later that night to work on a project. THAT boss I am friends with, so it was kind of a "I'll come but I don't want to" comment that we both laughed at. I guess this ass of a boss overheard and came back against me with it.

The personal preference of you who you work with does not compare to the willful violation of an osha policy.

The problem is that you state it as funny here, but there was nothing indicating such in your letter...
You are fighting a fire by adding fuel....
