View Full Version : Was this a WoW mail scam?

I received a COD mail that had a Gift wrap for 200g in the WoW mail yesterday. The letter that came with it looked like it was written by the Argent dawn, saying something about my reward for fighting the Scourge. I think it said that it was from Mvv, sounds suspisous to me though.

I read in the lastest patch notes "Players can no longer send gift wrapped packages via COD." so how would a player send me this COD if it was suppose to be fixed in the last patch?

To answer the question in the title, yes, it was a scam.

As for how it got into your mailbox I have no idea. If it's still there, take a screen shot, and leave it in there. File a GM ticket, and see what they have to say about it.

My guess is somehow it was sent before the change, and didn't actually get to him (or he didn't check his mail) until after the change.

Actually, seems there's a new twist to the scam nowadays.

My Rogue companion has gotten 3 scam mails over the weekend, with the gift from the Argent Dawn. The first 2 came in at 200 gold C.O.D., the next one a day later for 300 gold.

While you can no longer send gift-wrapped packages C.O.D., you can still send the actual gift wrap C.O.D. The icons appear pretty similar, so the unattentive could still see it as a package rather than just vendor wrapper.

But as far as I know, no NPC mail is ever sent C.O.D., and certainly not by someone named 'dwrff' or somesuch.

No NPC sends CoD mail, you are correct. Falling for gift-wrap being sent CoD seems like people who just don't bother to pay attention at all.

To mail COD packages, follow these steps:
1) Distract the GMs with some tasty cheese from Tria's Cheese shop.
2) Stuff the COD package into the mailbox full-force while the GMs munch away at the cheese.
3) Run out of the city before the GMs realized you were there.

or..

1) Google "mailbox hax"...

It seems like this is happening more and more. Several of my guildies have gotten this in the last week. If I get one I'll just leave it in my mailbox and file a ticket. End of story.

I got one of these the other day, where somebody from the "Argent Dawn" sent me some bread with a 200g COD attached to it. I thought it was quite clever, at first glance it looked like a mail from an NPC, but I'm smart enough to think about what I'm picking up before I spend 200g on it.

I reported one of these on my server last night. The GM said "they will be taking appropraite action"

whatever that means...?

it might be a scam. i suggest that you ignore those things. but if you are really curious about it then go on, just don't give any personal info to him/her!

It is the standard response. They can't say what they are going to do about it, just that something is being done.

Huh? Did you even read the post you quoted? Item sent to OP, charging CoD for a lot of gold. If the OP went with it, the OP loses gold for... a worthless item. What part of that would end up being the OP giving any information to the scammer? No personal information needed, just the OP's gold was demanded.
