Linking to items in chat window

How do I link to an item in my inventory via the chat window so that others can click on it to see the items?

I often see messages coming up with trades and sales and cant figure how you do it.

Any help appreciated.

In 'chat mode' (after pressing Enter so that you see the chat bar), shift + left click on an item in your inventory. The name appears clickable in your chat message.

It is not possible on certain channels like the General channel, /say,... only in the ones where you basically need to use it. But even then you can still do the shift click to paste the name of the item in your chat, it's just not clickable then.

Is it possible to link items that are not in your inventory? I've seen chat before that people were linking items that they want and do not have in their possesion. How were they doing this?

- they saw them in the AH, you can link from there
- some addons allow this as well. Beware though, if nobody has seen that item yet since last server-restart the server thinks your messing with him and drops your connection. But don't worry, Blizz won't ban you for it or anything and ppl use those addons a lot.

Ive never tried it John, but I think you can link an item thats in trade/party/whisper chat aswell as what Wintrow said above?

To make it clearer, I mean I think you can link from someone elses "chat".

You can. Anytime an item is linked, you can take over that link and post it yourself. There are in fact many ways to link an item you don't have yourself. There's the AH, as Wintrow mentioned. There's also an addon called Lootlink (http://wowui.incgamers.com/ui.php?id=4456) which basically remembers any linked item you ever saw by putting them into a database. From there, you can link any item yourself.

Beware, if you link stuff from lootlink et al which hasn't yet dropped on your server, you can be disconnected- so don't go crazy with those legendary item links :)
