I have been having a too many screen lock ups lately so I decided to uninstall WoW from my C: drive with little space left and install in on my D: drive with a headroom of 500gig. So far the game seems to run more smoothly, I think I was running out of virtual memory with WoW taken up 8 gig of space.
Originally I installed WoW back in patch 1.07 or something like that. We are well in Patch 2.08 with the first expansion Burning Crusade. I just thought I would share how long it takes to load the game up now days.
First of all I downloaded the BC expansion upgrade to temp directory since my son had my BC box and disks to load on his computer. That alone was a 2 hour D/L but was able to do that in the background during idle time. It only took about 5 minutes to do the Un-install, there was the sense of dread hitting that "Uninstall WoW, Are you sure?" button.
I inserted the main game disk one (the dvd disk would have been faster I think) and started on my quest. Roughly 15 minutes on each disk to load and ask to insert next disk up to disk four. After the fourth disk I was asked to start a new account or sign in existing account, of course I already had an account. Just for grins, I exited the start up and tried to load the BC expansion. A box came up and said I had to be upgraded to 2.01 to load the BC expansion. I started the game and proceeded with the patch upgrades. The first one that loaded was patch 1.12, once finished signed in again and the next patch came up to download. This one was 1.12 to 2.01, ahhh finally getting somewhere.
After 2.01 finished I did not sign in yet, I started the BC expansion upgrade I D/L ealier. This time it continued with the upgrade and was surprisingly fast, but then again had to sign and go thru more patch upgrades. By this time I was losing concentration so I lost count of how many times I signed in, restarted, download patch, rinse, repeat... I think it was at least 4 times. including the launch box upgrade.
Finaly the continual loop of restarts stopped and I was offered to choose a realm. I already had a realm so I clicked thru to my server and found my toons waitng for me to control their destiny once again....
All in all it took about 2 1/2 hours to load the game starting at disk one.
