View Full Version : I can't be the only idiot...
I guess I'm still not used to the whole 'flying' thing...
Has anyone else started flying in a direction, get distracted, then flown much further then expected?
A few times now I'll start flying, get distracted with something else- and do my usual "nope, hasn't landed yet- I can ignore the game for a while longer"... all the while forgetting that I'm not on some autopilot gryphon that's going to land for me.
After 5-10 minutes I'll realize what I did, but by then I'm a zone or two away from where I wanted to be.
On a side note, I also don't like that you can dismount in the air...

Hehe i tried that once... here's a paraphrase of guild chat...
<ME> Wonder if I can dismount then re-mount while in the air?
<Guild> No idea...
<ME> I'm gong to try it
<ME> Ok, flying up.... wow you can fly really high!!!
<ME> here i go...
... dismount
<Guild> Why don't you try it over water?
... 'You cannot do that while moving'
<ME> Yes, that's a good idea...
... 'You cannot do that while moving'

Ice block and/or blink is ftw. While I await my guildmates to get a group together, I fly as high as I can through the hole in the middle of shattrah then fall....trying to get an iceblock as close to the ground as I can get.
But yes, I too have gone afk while flying only to end up in the completly wrong zone.

For a fun time I suggest using the jump-o-matic thing in nagrand (used in that quest to get the egg from the nest) then mounting up and flying near the upper flight limit and then dismounting and just enjoy the slow fall back to earth.
Don't go too high though or else the 2 or 3 minute timer will actually run out before you land and you will splat.

Well, I've flown off to go somewhere, but I don't usually leave it alone -- because I don't want to go too far out of my way from places I am heading.

MACRO:
#showtooltip
/stopmacro [flying]
/use Blue Windrider
That would stop you from dismounting in the air. Simply change "Blue Windrider" with your flying mount item's name. Then use this macro on your toolbar to summon/dismiss the flying mount.

That is why parachute cloak is your friend.
But I believe mages do have a spell to slow your falling speed.
But if all else fails, fall on the water.

QFT, engineers should make sure that they put them on before entering Shatt. City for the first time (name abbreviated for truth). Those lifts claim many many souls, partly due to a fun bug where sometimes they descend and you're left hanging in mid-air for a few seconds like Wile E Coyote before plunging to your death.
Needless to say, the second that you get a flying mount, problem solved. Until then, it can be a bit hairy.

I tried to see if you can remount in the air once but I didn't expect it to work so I stripped first. I also flew up as high as the game would allow me to go to see how long it would take to hit the ground.

That is the main reason I chose to ally with the Scryers rather than the Aldor. Lower platform.

I was in Gnomer yesterday and got tricked again by the damn elevator... got lucky to fall fast enough to "catch" the elevator (I don't know how...) before it reach the bottom and ended with less than 1% of my life, BUT I was still alive!

What I want to know is why there is an elevator that leads between the ALdor and Scryer areas....... can anybody ever use this?!

Yes being able to dismount in the air can be annoying at times. Your not an idiot, it's not hard to get distracted and go off course a bit. I do it sometimes, even when I have autowalk on and I'm looking at something else, I'll sometimes walk further than I was wanting to.
Mistakes don't make you an idiot. ;)

...but I'll just assume that continuing to make the same ones do. :-)
Eh, I suppose it's better then causing wipes.

Wait till you get the epic...
Then you can look away for a couple seconds only to turn back and find that you're out in the middle of the nether somewhere... lol

How about this one;
My friend had a lvl 69 rogue who needed to be summoned to a spot that was only accessable by flight for a quest. We got him summoned there, did the quest, and then I thought I'd be clever by saying something like "good luck finding your way back" before mounting and flying away leaving him stranded.
Well instead of getting on my flying mount, I hit my ground mount hotkey by mistake, jumped off the cliff and fell to my death wondering why I was decending instead of ascending. Man we had a good laugh about that for quite some time.

Yeah those lifts in shattrath city actually descend at almost the same rate as WoW terminal velocity... so if you miss even by a second, you're pretty much gone.

I love flight form... my lasy way to the ground is to hop out and into flight form =]
I wonder how long it's gonna take me to kill myself on azeroth.... hop of of somewhere high and go flight form... the last thing you hear before you splat is "You can't do that here."
