Would you be interested in a LAN (or WAN?) party specifically for World of Warcraft where you can enjoy a broadband connection and other goodies? We were ...

Red Dragon Event is a project stared by a group of close friends (of which most are avid World of Warcraft players) with the idea to become among the first large World of Warcraft specific LAN (WAN?) parties in Western Europe.

Our goal is to offer players a chance to join with long-time online friends and guildies in an event where we will provide you with contests, awards and simply the means to come in contact with eachother in real life.

Currently we are still gathering information on how to organize this event best, and to get a general idea on the numbers we’re talking about here we need your help! If you would be interested in joining an event in the near future for the duration of an entire weekend please sign up on our “mailing list”.

We quote the mailing list as it’s not really a mailing list. We won’t be spreading your e-Mail around of course, it’s strictly confidential. As it stands now, we won’t be using it as a mailing list either way. The mailing list is just a means to verify the authenticity of your person and to get a more clear headcount for our future event.

You can sign up on the mailing list on our temporary website: http://wow.telenet.be/reddragonevent/

Sincerely,
Red Dragon Events

Advertisements aren't really liked here unless they are passed through the admins for approval first. Be careful.

I can totally understand that advertisments are not really appreciated, but this is in no way meant as an advertisment.
It's more a kind of 'poll' (in a weird way; or call it a market investigation) to see if people would actually be interested in such an event, because we are just in the brain storming phase. (and if people don't care for something like this we're not gonna spend our time and resources in that direction)

But if this is in any way against the forum rules, I wouldn't mind if this post got deleted.

Why go set up a network to play wow when you can play it where you are now without having to move?
For exactly the same reasons people setup other LAN Parties, to meet each other in real life and play together.

Unless you have done this before you have no idea how much fun these things can be, most of us sit alone at our machines and play games. This gets people together.

I do agree that the OP would be best advised to talk to the Admins about this. For one thing you may get a lot more active support for the event from them.

For another, if you can show that what you are doing is perfectly legal (no private WOW servers etc) and the Admins back this then you get a considerable base of players who may be interested in getting involved.

although, technically its not a LAN party, its a WAN party. A LAN is a local event hosted on a local area network. You are attempting a Wide area network, a lan connecting to the internet.

And secondly why lan with WoW? i can understand competitive games like cs/rts games that you can host a server locally...

thirdly, i hate to pee on your parade, but you will require a big internet pipe to host all the players you hope to achieve. Not only that but players being players will have IM's open, web browsing, file sharing, LAN shares,
downloading addons their friends have etc this will choke your already thin pipe and will make the game unplayable.

I organised lans monthly for an old Cs clan i was in for 20-50 members each month, i also helped organise 3 major irish gaming lans last year. the internet connection you require is NOT readily available in the venues you will be able to afford.

My advice would be to aim for internet café's, but even this will hurt your attendance. People come to lans for 4 reasons:

games
people
free/cracked software/movies/games
and to show off their rig.

the internet café will rule out the wares and epeen showing off straight away as caf's wont let you use your machines on their lan. The internet cafe is also NOT suitable for users with custom interfaces so they will not be bothered redoing their UI for one day.

The next option you would have is Hotel function room rental, but unless they can provide you with 10mb+ dedicated line (up and down) and give you the ability to both proxy and filter traffic the network will be overcongested before 100% attendance. the price for all of the above would also limit you to a large event. The mess gamers leave is also disgusting, so you will have dificulty finding one that will ignore this.

Nice idea, wont work though without huge investment.

Oh the heady days when I had no internet and had to lan. The hours spent setting up servers for antiquated comps. The diablo II sessions. I wasn't the only guy with legit SP characters back then.

That said, I've cleaned up after lans, and it's something i'd not wish on my worst enemy. Pizza boxes stacked to the rafters. Moldy coke. Chip bags in a reef under the tables.

I still miss lanning though. Of course, western europe is kind of a stretch for me, I come from that mystical and magical land, Australia. Vegemite, kangaroos, that manner of guff.

I'm a bit confused by what you are offering.

Basically, you are offering a building to have people gather at?

I don't know about EU, but here in the US there are local LAN parties all over...and often eenough HUGE LAN (and in this case WAN) parties.

Why would I pay you to use your house when I can do it for myself, charge each person a few bucks to get some pizzas and drinks, and have an all night game-a-thon.

i really don't like the idea of WOW LAN..i mean i like to play with others with whom i have no connection or something. it would erase the fun of meeting new people.
