Netherwelp question

I've purchased the collector's edition of the expansion pack and am currently installing - I've just read that I need to snail mail Blizzard Europe with my paperwork to get the exclusive pet, which is a bit of a faff, but worth it (I guess) in the end.

My question is:

What is the Netherwelp (and the second free one, a murloc) pet for?

I'm a level 31 fire/arcane mage, and bought a kitten pet from the Crazy Cat Lady south of Stormwind, which doesn't do much except look cute.

Does the netherwelp (and/or murloc) attack and help in fighting, like Warlocks can have? :smiley:
